Computer moves, player produces

I started an experimental game as Germany. I let computer move and took only the production part, to see whether computer can take some advantage from human controled production and research.

In the course of the game I encountered two odd things:

1. The games does not let me exit into the main menu (x). I had to go to the game options (o), assume the control over the movement and only then it let me exit the game.


2. AI consistently refused to let me build carriers as Germany. I started one in Southern Italy on turn one (Su 41), only to see it vanish from the production track by Fa 41. I checked the overall unit list and there was one German carrier listed as destroyed. In Fa 41 I started another carrier in Northern Italy. In Wi 42, this one went poof as well with two carriers now listed as lost. Finally, I tried German shipyards and again, despite the fact that I had resources, and that carrier icon appeared in the appropriate box within the production track, the game did not let me build German carriers. How was that possible if I, the player, had control over the production?

There are certain things Gary didn't want the AI to do. I guess they are hard coded and somehow come into play even when you control production for the computer. The block on carriers is the only thing I can think of, although there may also be one on Soviet Heavy fleets.

I know about the limits upon builds that are written in the "ai.txt" file. I don't know why these limitations apply when production is controled by human rather than AI.

Anyway, since my AI field commander utterly failed to defeat Soviets even with me in the role of Speer, I am less inclined to inflict similar frustrations again and would resume the direct control of the war, [:)]
