Random Crash Back to Windows Desk Top

Post by James P »

I've reported this problem before, but as it's seemingly random, and I hoped new versions of the game would correct it, I've never really pushed for a resolution, but it’s back :(

When playing PBEM games (and only PBEM games) I randomly get the game crashing back to the windows desktop. It seems a “clean” crash, as the PC doesn’t lock up and my SPWAW menu is still sitting there ready to use. The symptoms are as follows:

1. Click on the PBEM saved slot
2. Enter password
3. Password accepted, PBEM files found
4. Click on Start Turn button
5. Before the map comes up and the turn opens, the game crashes completely and returns me back to the windows desktop, but the PC is fine to continue using.

This has happen intermittently from about version 4.2 I think. I’ve tried various things to resolve it, and I can go weeks without it appearing.

My current cure I have stumbled seems flaky, but has worked every time. If I get the above crash on one of my PBEM games, I open solitaire game vs the PC, get the map open and quit the game straight away. By successfully displaying a map in the current SPWAW session, I can then go back to the PBEM file and it opens with a problem.

I’ve no idea what is causing this, and as I said it seems random. Might it have something to do with screen resolutions or something?

My PC is a Dell Dimension XPS 650, Windows 98, 256Mb RAM, 32MB ATI All in Wonder AGP graphics card. My desktop resolution is 1024 x 768.

Any suggestions welcome :)
Cheers,

JP

When in doubt try deleting the steel.prf file (in save folder) as a first step (then restart SPWAW).

If this doesn't work - then you might have a problem :D
