- The Unit Sound FX ceases, but Weather and Battle FX continue.
- The Menu Bar buttons and Battle Conditions box disappear -- the Menu Bar looks like a blank plate, except for the Preferences and Help buttons at the bottom, and the labels "Battle Conditions" and "VCR Playback".
- The keyboard commands cease to function, except for a few (smoke and bail out keys for tanks, surrender/F9; pressing the Options key causes the display to sort of reverse video, but there's no text or buttons).
I can select units and give them orders, but I cannot end the turn, load or unload, plot artillery, etc.
A similar problem occurs if I spend "too much time" on the scenario selection menu -- clicking on a scenario title causes the list to go away (it's not blank, it just all shows "Empty", but the scenarios were all there before the click).
I used to play version 4.4 on the same PC and had no problems. Then one day, the above
problem occurred. When I checked out the support pages, I decided to wait and download
version 5.01, to see if the problem still occurs -- it does. I realize it sounds like something on my PC has changed, but nothing has. I have an Intel P2 and I'm running Win98 with an ATI 3D Rage Pro and a SoundBlaster PCI 128; DirectX is at 7.0.
In going through past posts, I found a few reporting similar problems; some of the suggestions were to turn off hardware acceleration, but that didn't fix it for me. I reinstalled several times, but it's obviously been with me since v4.5 ... and yet, that version worked alright for several months.
If anyone can suggest anything that might clear up this problem, I would sure appreciate it.
