What to do when the U.S. is after you?

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

What to do when the U.S. is after you?

Post by Grand_Armee »

Generally, I play Prussia, but I wanted to see what could be done with Britain. Eventually, after a war with Spain and Turkey, I got a few extra provinces...almost all of the Balkans(seems they ain't worth much at the peace table...but hell, they'll be taxpayers), some of Italy, and Portugal.

Finally, Spain declared against me and I decided to blockade a few of her ports. I have four fleets at the time, and two were free for duty off the coast of Spain. One was Blockading Palermo to which I'd lain seige.

Next turn, a window pops up with a constipated-looking diplomatic advisor telling me that my blockade has angered the U.S. Navy...and that I'm now at war with Uncle Sam.

Anyway to make peace with them? I haven't been press-ganging their sailors (that I know of) so they should be somewhat amenable to a peace deal....I hope, anyway.

Britain is turning out harder to play than I thought. Successive battles with hordes of Turkish and Spanish ships (some SOL, many privateers) whittled one of my fleets into insignificance.(Ah, so mass can deal vit zee Britishen fleet!) I think I must have sunk some 300 privateers already. (I think these privateers are a little easy to come by)

Anyway...any help would be appreciated.

Yep, the Americans are a pain in the be****. I generally just sink all their ships - its a bit of a relief when they declare war, since it is an excuse to get rid of their merchants who have been moving into the better trade zones.

I think you can ask them for a cease fire by going to the International Relations screen and then right? clicking on their country name (United States).

The way the code is now the U.S. fights until it loses a critical number of ships.

They fought me for a while, then went about their business. I devastated their fleet, and a huge number of merchants.

Playing Britain is most enjoyable, with fewer provinces and fewer trade links to (bother to) handle. Most of the income comes from merchants, and this income source can be awesome. I often saw my merchants defeat privateers in one-vs-one cases, unless some of the nations had developed naval gun, manoeuvre, and/or repair. If you can't really be bothered with privateers, you can build more fleets to chase and encircle them turn after turn and you'll be sure to get them all off the map. Or you can choose to detach and spread your ships in oft-visited sea zones. Britain can build and maintain a respectable lot of ships to do this job.
