Our Finest Hour 2x2 PBEM (Japan)

Post by GaryChildress »

Hello all, this will be the Japanese perspective of a 2x2 PBEM game between dpstafford and Nomad (Allies) vs. Scott1964 and Myself: Gary Childress (Japan). Scott will be in command of the Eastern part of the map (as well as control Japanese industry) and will be up against Nomad. I will be commanding the West and will be most directly up against dpstafford.

Game settings are as follows:

Standard scenario 15, no mods, version 1.602

Both sub doctrines: OFF
FoW: ON
Advanded Weather: ON
Allied Damage Control: ON
Historical 1st Turn: ON
Player Defined Upgrades: ON
Vary Setup: OFF
Dec 7th Surprise: ON
Reinforcements: Variable +/- 15 Days
Turn cycles: 1 Day
Auto sub ops: OFF

Everything else: ON

Some of you may already know Ken a/k/a Nomad, Scott and Myself from the Brink of Disaster 3x3 AAR which we have been writing together as Allies in another PBEM game. Well, Scott and I have turned to evil in this one, leaving Nomad and dpstafford to save the world in the name of goodness and light. Scott and I on the other hand will be doing our best to bring prosperity to our brothers in Greater East Asia by ensuring that the SRA is controlled by Asians for Asia. Of course most of the resources must go to the homeland for the war effort, but once that's over and the Allies have accepted defeat all in Asia will reap the benefits.

Good luck to all and may the most sinister and diabolical team win (that's us).

Good luck Gary, I'm looking forward to being able to read one of your AARs for a change since Brink of Disaster is off limits.

Thanks Bob. One of these days (about 5 years from now or so) we'll all have to stop in and read each other's AARs for fun! All I've gotten to see of The Emporer's Champions 3x3 AAR is that one "declassified" post you made in my thread where I was enquiring about Japanese submarines and their float planes. Very well done I might add. [:)]

Yea, I'm not as capable as Alichi and some of the other beautiful AAR's I've read, but I try to keep it more interesting than pasted combat reports. I"m sure as time goes on, we'll be able to declassify pages of the AAR similar to PzB and Wobbly (and others).

I'm like you, I tried to jazz up our AAR a little to compete with Fear and Loathing but I'm afraid there's only one Cap Mandrake and gang. So I've been keeping my posts a little more concise and to the point lately, but, as you say, without simply pasting combat reports. I do from time to time post one or two sections of a combat report followed by a map and text to explain what is happening. Hopefully that won't bore readers to death. Occasionally I throw in a picture or something to split things up a bit. We'll have to see what happens, I try a few different things. Sometimes I run off on a tangent that has nothing directly to do with the game, depending on what kind of mood I'm in. My goal is to make things interesting. Whether it works or not others will have to be the judge. So...we'll see how this one turns out. [:)]

Our Finest Flop!

Post by GaryChildress »

Looks like we're off to a great start! Although numerous ships were damaged we only managed to sink one PT BOAT at Pearl Harbor! Yes, that's right! Our pilots came back with one confirmed sunk American PT boat! I would post a map or picture, however I don't think a picture could adequately express such a victory...

On second thought, let me just rub it in a little on our pathetic pilots.

Don't feel too bad - In my game against Mantill, my Pearl Harbor strike was cancelled due to bad weather. As I said to Marc in my initial post turn 1 email - "I can see the headlines now - 'DAY OF INFAMY CANCELLED ON ACCOUNT OF BAD WEATHER'"

Well, one PT boat is a start... It's a SLOW start, but a start nonetheless. Did you have better luck elsewhere?

Now that you mention it, I have had a couple games against the AI where the Allies didn't loose any ships at Pearl. But when the emporer hears about this I may have to commit hari kari.

LOL! I'm just worried the Allies may just decide to make peace with us instead of declaring war. I suppose we could still make the excuse that our carriers wandered off course and accidentally sank one of their PT boats. [:D]

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

Post by GaryChildress »

The Japanese newspapers got a little excited about yesterday's events. Here is their report (English version of course):

PS. that is an actual picture of Tokyo Rose, albeit after the war, as she is surrounded by American news correspondents.

Well we almost had two turns in one night done but I've got technical difficulties. Looks like the turn came back to me from my partner without his orders incorporated into it. So, before I go to bed, I'm going to post a quick summary of the day's action. I'm still toying around with the newspaper format and think I may just adopt it as the trademark of my AARs.

Here's the latest out of my sector. It includes future objectives which, though predictable are highly secret.

I like the newspaper format, it makes for an interesting visual read. If you do edits later on will you change it to 2nd edition?

Don't worry about the bad Pearl Harbor attack. Pretty much the same thing happened to the Japanese in Fear and Loathing, and two months later look at them; their merchant marine is a squeaky toy for the Royal Navy Bulldog, they are losing planes faster than they build them, and their armies are stalled everywhere but other than that it's not so bad.
