Scuttles!?!?!?

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Scuttles!?!?!?

Post by Grand_Armee »

Last night, France and Russia finally DOW'd me. It was 1808 playing the 1792 scenario.

Conveniently they had two fleets sitting in Brest. So, I thought I might as well rid the world of them on my Franco-Russian tour.

I blockaded Brest immediately and prepared troops to invade from Portugal and Kent.

The invasion went as planned, and I lay seige to Brest, whereupon a French army moved into my view from the southeast. I had the game set for the choice to rally garrisons to combat. What a sucker the AI is for that!

Anyway, a tough contest ensued in Brittany and the French were repelled. Next turn, I saw two British fleets sitting in Brest. I couldn't remember ordering them there, so I clicked on them. Sure enough, one was the Baltic fleet, and the other the Joyeuse fleet.

I don't like the prospect of giving my fleets away for nothing...especially so they can be useful to an enemy. And I don't think any Admiral who was content with his head's connection to his neck would dare let them fall undamaged into the hands of an enemy.

Peace terms aside, their has to be a way to scuttle fleets.

but, they were captured by having there ports overran, they should of been at sea

right or wrong

but from my games at least, it is HARD to get them trapped in Port to start with, most times when I have tried it, they will sally forth, and have a battle with my blockageing fleet

AI code was added to get them out of port if they thought there was a chance to do so.
If seems to work pretty well. But if you get the blockading fleet in place before advancing on the city, you can get this sort of turnover. I quite like it.

Well, I don't like it. I'm hoping for the day when everything is functioning correctly and a bunch of guys from various countries can meet online, whack out a few hours of play and save the game for later...perhaps even complete an entire campaign.

I don't mind suckering the AI. But I've seen EIA played with a very rapacious Britain who'll do her best to retain her position as mistress of the seas. Enabling her to double her fleets when an opponent has a weak moment is tantamount to a game ruiner.

There should to be a scuttle option.

In the game mentioned above, I began the blockade as soon as I was dow'd. And you know how long it takes to board ship and get to the sea area.

There was no attempt to sally forth and escape. Perhaps that was because in that sea area there was not only the blockading fleet, but also two landing fleets. In an adjacent sea area was a fleet guarding a supply line originating in Kent.

I might accept an option where some (a small proportion) of the ships might be captured in a damaged state. But certainly all of them shouldn't go to a power ready for battle next turn. It is only fair.
