WaW crashes on startup

I bought and installed WaW a couple days ago but can't get it running. My computer is a few years old but meets the minimum system requirements. I updated my video driver, but the problem remains: I get to the startup screen with the progress bar... the bar fills to near the end then switches to a black screen with the "busy" hourglass pointer. After a minute of that windows gives me the message:

"WaW executable has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Any ideas?

Did you check your sound driver? Also, be sure you have a lot of virtual memory (around 1500 MB would be good). I've heard some 3rd party codecs can cause problems. You should post a dxdiag report on your system so the tech guys can take a look.
