Lend Lease and other surprises

Post by mcaryf »

I suppose this should have been obvious to me but it was not. As I am only playing my second game of GGWAW, I thought I would set the AI to play with advanced supply whilst I used ordinary. I thougt that by this means I could watch how supply trucks were deployed without having to do it myself.

Well I have done reasonably well and completed the conquest of India (as the Germans) so I could link up with my AI ally Japan. Unfortunately of course the lend lease button stays greyed out - I should have realised I would need some trucks to drive over the border to Siam!

I also made rather a classic newbie error of thinking that the benefits of attacking frozen Soviet regions would apply for the whole turn rather than just one conflict. Unfortunately I started with a relatively minor air attack so missed out on a big bonus.

My third surprise was that I could avoid Op Fire from Morocco by hopping in and out of Gibraltar on my way out of the Med, was this intentional or just a vagary of the coding?

Finally I am surprised at the lethality of submarines once torpedo and evasion values have been teched up. I have virtually destroyed the entire Allied navy with just 15 U-Boats. I march up and down from Gibraltar to Norway round the North of the UK and sink everything I meet! In practice in WW2, U-Boats had to get lucky to sink major warships as they typically travelled too fast for the U-Boats to get a good shot. On several occasions Hitler diverted the subs from the tonnage war to try to influence invasions eg North Africa and D-Day but they were never very successful. It seems to me that warships should start with a higher evasion against U-Boats - even the electro-boats, had they been deployed in large numbers, were not going to be that effective as warship killers although pretty good against MS.

Mike, I have to agree with you. I would like to see something done to increase U Boat Evasion generally while decreasing their attack rating.
