WitP: Atlantic, Mediterranean & Europe

Post by Captain Cruft »

I have been beavering away on the map. One column at a time, working from left to right. Currently on column 41 of 150 ...

Below is a screenshot of the US East Coast. I am not going to bother with detailed coast lines for now, it's extremely time-consuming as it is. What I am concerned about are a) blatant errors and b) distances. The scale is supposed to be 60 miles per hex, as per normal.

The left edge of the screenshot is also the left edge of the map.

Although you can't see it there is a pwhex.dat structure under-lying the graphic. Right now it has the correct basic terrain type. Hex-sides and transport links will follow later.

All comments gratefully received :)

Just one thing: don't you think a 60-mile scale is to big for the Med?

That was quick! [X(] I'm impressed.

Can't wait to see how you do Europe. Is this the top-left edge? Or is Canada in there as well?

Yes but then I think the same for the Pacific too :) This is just a bit of fun ...

Well I am making a map. Then scenarios can follow :) I expect whatever results to have numerous problems though.

Thanks, but it's really not quick, there is an awful way long to go ... :)

Of course Canada is there. Halifax and St. John feature large in the Atlantic convoys. However, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia are still looking rather messy so instead here is a picture of the northern extremities, including Baffin Island and Greenland.

Very, very cool. I'll be following for sure.

It'll be interesting to see how the convoys work out ..

I think I have a reasonable idea. Doubtless I will still be surprised though ;)

One thing to say about this project. I am taking no account whatsoever of the AI. The resultant scenario(s) will only be playable H2H. This not because I have anything against AI play, it's just an impossibility.

That, obviously, represents the biggest problem. I've seen first-hand the difficulties in getting the AI to behave in WPO.

Same reason I'm doing my own rather less ambitious mod, War Plan Sliced Apricot... Not really for public consumption.[;)]

Here is a rough JPEG of the whole map so far. The brown bars at the top and bottom represent unplayable areas. This is due to the data I am using only providing 140 vertical hexes. I don't anticipate this being a problem though. Convoys to Murmansk will still be possible ...

Biggest East Coast staging area for American troops was Camp Kilmer N.J., in the hex just southwest of New York on your 1st map...Glad you are donating your time to this great effort...................Thank you..............

Thanks, that's exactly the sort of info I need.

To clarify:

Is it more than 60 miles from NYC? Otherwise it will just be incorporated into the New York base.
If it should be separate, should it be an airfield, port or both? If so, what size (in WitP terms)?

In the same vein ...

Here is a slightly better version of the East Coast. I have added Baltimore. It is possibly a bit too close to New York but I'm not going to worry, space is limited.

Now, my ignorance knows no bounds - are there any other significant PORTS in the area shown that I should be including? Also, what size should the 4 existing ones be? Right now I have them all at 10.

I think if you moved NY & Long Island on hex closer to Boston it would better position these in relation to each other...
then you could squeeze in the missing Philadelphia - port size 10 at the least..

I think also missing south of Norfolk would be Savannah a large port.
I'll let my Southern Bretheren fill in any other missing southern ports...

For game terms 10 for port seems reasonable for those 4. Not sure on air though.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

You'll probably end up having to throw in Charleston, SC as well - one of the more major ports in the south - but I honestly have no idea what her WitP stats would be. The US East coast is just covered in ports; then again, Britain is probably going to be entirely composed of Size 10s .. [:-]
