Light surface forces clash in Puget Sound!
The force that was spotted yesterday was DD's that came down the Vancouver Slot to try to sanitize the Sound. American HQ thinks that the loss ratio was pretty good. Japanese carriers appear to be retreating to Sitka, probably to rearm/refuel. More commerce raiding in the NP; looks like IJN is sending subs to assist their beleaugered shipping.

SF and DETROIT strike again!
San Francisco’s group links up with Detroit’s and more havoc ensues in the North Pacific south of the Aleutians. Massive air raid Vancouver catches some a/c on the ground. None that are irreplaceable and the ground crews have most of the damage repaired by the end of the afternoon; there are a lot of them. AA fire is spotty, need to have the fusing checked on the larger AA guns. Enemy vanguard marching upon our outlying positions; contact imminent. Should have a picture for you next report.

RE: SF and DETROIT strike again!
Hi, Well the land units are all ashore on the west coast. Now we just need to find out
1. Are there enough of them (9 Div and 5 Bde)
2. Can they move south fast enough
Robert can tell you I am turning into a chicken. (I think the operation took too long. I can see where I could be 2-3 weeks further along. ) Also of course in a full game the Chinese front would have to have been active to clear the southern RR for land units to march to Malaya/Burma. The Japanese should capture Ambonia/Kendari rather then Mindano. (or at least add Ambonia/Kendari to capture list.)

Hi, Well the land units are all ashore on the west coast. Now we just need to find out
1. Are there enough of them (9 Div and 5 Bde)
2. Can they move south fast enough
My guess would be yes to the first, but no to the second. In mid-February you should be encountering serious troubles from the weather, considering your boys are still in Canada. (And the trans-Alaskan highway hasn't been completed yet.)
Question: Are Canadian and American militia units forming?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Land Units Ashore
Weather does not have a lot of effect in this game compared to historical effect. For example the Monsoon in WitP is annoying, but in real life it simply stopped the war.

Question: Are Canadian and American militia units forming?
Militia units? First off, I have no idea what you are referring to. The only thing that I know should happen in the near future is that all American/Canadian land and air groups will advance 180 days on the schedule, which will increase my forces fairly significantly. There is an allusion to additional units becoming available, but I have no data on that as of yet. I compiled a list of the ground reinforcements out to 262 days as of Jan 24, 1942. Will compare to what arrives and see if there are units that are not on this list. Personally, I would think that an Armored Division or two would come from the East if the Japanese came onto the Continent....
But, he hasn't gotten to the trip line yet; should be soon (like 3-4 days I think) based on rate of advance.
Tom: I don't know about that so much. It might not be as severe, but the seeming tendency for the NW America to be in Tstorms seemingly continually is quite annoying. Even with multiple bases it seems to be less than 50/50 most times to launch. Either you are socked in or the enemy is covered. LA and SD are a paradise compared to the NW, so that is a great R&R destination...[8D] I keep thinking of Mark Twain when I do this game.....

Transcript of the President’s Fireside Chat of the 26th of February, 1942
My fellow Americans:
During the last 2 ½ months, we have been at war with the Empire of Japan and their allies, the Axis powers of Germany and Italy. In Europe, our allies Great Britain hold the line against them as we build up to strike back against the Fascists and free Europe from the Nazi boot of oppression. Meanwhile, in the Pacific, the Japanese expansionists have not only struck at our naval and air bases in the Pacific; they have invaded American territory in Alaska and Canadian at Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
Many have made comments that we are not doing enough against the Japanese to repel their assault on our country. I will now address these statements to those who think our response has been inadequate.
As of this date, I can now make the following things public, as in a short time the Japanese will be very aware of the situation they face in the Western Hemisphere.
Under the auspices of the 7th, 5th and 11th air forces, we now have nearly 2000 combat aircraft deployed against the Japanese; and this number is growing…..
Under the command of the Western Defense Command (aka West Coast HQ) there are 3 corps, consisting of 11 American Divisions, 11 American Regimental Combat Teams, 3 Canadian Brigades and over 300, 000 additional support troops; and this number is growing…..
Our Pacific Fleet is fully manned, fueled and ready to deal with the enemy. Its carriers, battleships and supporting vessels are positioned to repulse any enemy move. The ports of the Western Defense Command are fortified with mines and coastal defense guns; and these numbers continue to grow…..
Pearl Harbor has been repaired, fortified and is providing support for raiders that have been attacking the Japanese supply lines; these raids will continue and will grow in number.
In the Far East, our allies the Dutch, Australians and British are not quiescient; they are making life difficult for the Japanese and this effort will only grow with time.
I now call on the Japanese Emperor to end this conflict. I call on him to remove the dictator Mogami from his position of Prime Minister and War Leader immediately; then to withdraw all forces from the Western Hemisphere and to activate an immediate cessation of hostilities across the entire Pacific. Then the Allied countries will make their peace terms known; items that will be on the list will be the status of the Japanese Navy and air forces, the redressing of the situation in China and the status of Japanese “colonies”, such as Formosa, Okinawa and Korea.
So, in closing, I say this: Emperor, end this war now or see the eventual destruction of your country. We will be generous in the peace; as generous as we will be implacable should this war continue. Your expeditionary fleet and army will be utterly destroyed should you continue down this path of war that you and your government have started on.
As always, I am your President, Franklin Roosevelt.
Good night.

RE: The President addresses the Nation!!
Hi tabpub,
does that mean that Mogami triggered the Allied reinforcements ? Or are those number before any activation ? Maybe you can list the divisions you have.

RE: The President addresses the Nation!!
Does this mean it's safe to pull the second Marine division out of San Francisco?
I would very much like to see the reinforcement list as well.
And yes, I know Mogami reads this thread, and I don't really care if he knows that the Marines are in San Fransico.

RE: The President addresses the Nation!!
Crap. I saved a different game to the slot that I reserve to save my player turn to before sending; so I can't give a detailed report, so will do it from memory.
Basically, I had everything that was in place or reinforcements up to the time that he entered the 132 hex.
2nd Marines and 3 RCTs in the battle at 132.
Canadians and Americal Div - Vancouver
2 extra RCT + starting Div (41st?) at Seattle
7th and 27th Divs at SF
40th at LA
So, reinforcements accounted for about 6 full Divisions and 6 RCTs by my count.
They would have been the:
32nd Div
1st Mar
37th Div
153rd RCT
138th RCT
58th RCT
24th RCT
53rd RCT
112th Cav Rgt
these were listed on the reinforcement schedule and were within 180 days and accelerated forward.
The following were not listed within 180 days and came on anyhow; I suppose that is what they meant by "other" units. Normally, these are formations that come into the game later:
6th Div
33rd Div
1st Cav Div
198th RCT
197th RCT
158th RCT
Ok, it looks like 8 RCT and a Cav Rgt were reinforcements; I can't keep them all straight in my head.
The plane reinforcements were several BG (one 17, one 26 as I recall, possibly another)
several BS of varying types
mucho FS (4-5 F4F, buncho Canuck, all the FS/G that had been disbanded/withdrawn earlier (so I have a couple of empty P40 units sitting playing cards right now).
And so many engineer/base/aviation that you can't shake a stick at them; they would take the stick and beat you with it. I mean it....SF has over 1000 AAA barrels at this moment.
Now, if he had landed/crossed the line earlier it would have slightly reduced this force. I had taken a poll on Jan 24 to see what was available; the following would have been the combat infantry units to remove from the above list if the trigger had been on that date:
NONE [X(]
and the support unit total would have only been reduced by approximately 1/5th or 1/6th, so most of them would have been there also.
so, if this force is too much for a "prepared and supported" effort, it certainly is for a "bolt from the blue", unless special circumstances are applied. These would be something like:
SF completely empty of troops; Japanese land, reinforcements placed, but they have not drawn supplies so fight very poorly first round and get pushed out in opening attack (oh, but wait, since its not an atoll, there is no auto shock attack on landing, so the reinforcing units WILL draw supply for the next turn); or,
different base attacked and Japanese able to get lodgement as all special reinforcing infantry come at SF and have to march to landing (and based on the above, the US player would guard all the other ports with original/reinforcements that come before the landing making that difficult/impossible to take immediately).
But, any bolt from the blue attempt risks the whole enchilada; if the base is not captured immediately/quickly, you have little capability of resupply; little to no air support once the carrier air is either decimated or runs out of sortie points (and it has a long trip to go to rearm, unless you take another base nearer and that's still a couple of days steaming back and forth and taking that base takes away from your initial assault/reinforcement of the landing).
In short, I think that it is more likely for the Japanese to try to sneak a div or 2 thru in late 42 to land at Seattle when the Allied player has shoved everything to the front, than it would be at the beginning of the war. But even then, unless it is a pure VP ploy, it would be pointless and probably futile.

Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Mogami said it died processing my turn from our Lunacy game. It must have seen the writing on the wall and committed hara kiri.

I'm wondering if it is (or rather was) the PC that processed the most WITP PBEM turns in the world...

RE: Light surface forces clash in Puget Sound!
Hi, I can't prove it but I think I processed around 3000 PBEM turns (I even would bet this is considerbly less then actual)
As far as total turns when testing well I can't even compute that . Over 1 year of 18 hours per day 7 days a week.
My new computer is muich faster. Had I been using it from the start I could have done 2 or 3 times as many.

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

Ok, now that you are back up, should I expect another turn there Don Quixote? You still think that you can take on that windmill in SF?ORIGINAL: Mogami

THE CAMPAIGN CONTINUES!!!!!!!
OK!! We are now back on with the West Coast campaign! After poking Mogami a couple of times, he has refused a conditional surrender (all right, the terms were more like unconditional, but I split hairs) and we continue the campaign.
First, to get you up to date, I have taken the combat reports for the “front line” and arranged them to date. He tried a shock attack early in the week, but was repulsed. Now, it has settled down to bombardments and air attacks, but in the last day he pulled a sneaky on me and ambushed some of my squadrons over the front quite nicely. I don’t know how many fighters he has back at Prince Rupert to put that many in the air; it’s the last entry of all the combat reports in this group, if you want to skip to the chase…..

Then, the IJA has a “brainfart”, at least in my opinion, dropping a paratroop unit on the airfields at Portland!! The combat engineer regiment stationed there, combined with airstrikes and an RCT that showed up in 2 days renders this attack to the trashbin of history….one presumes that it was an attempt to delay the arrival of reinforcements to the front line.

Reports confirm that it was the 38th ID in those ships; this is the same formation that we saw leave Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago and were not able to score on with our subs off Taiwan. Now, they reside on lovely Adak for a while and won’t be available for the campaign for a while. Hope that they brought their longjohns…..
