But there are several that do follow it. I used to be a big fan of Manchester United because my mother was born near there and grew up as a fan, along with her brothers. I've kind of gotten away from it the last few years but I still watch when I can.

Sissy sports belong to sissy countries .... Opps did I say that outloud?
I dont watch much sports at all, well none actually. Though at one time American Football was fun to watch. Never much liked Soccer. Well except when my 6 year old played it.

If the little things annoy you, maybe that's because the big things are going well.

RE: Abbreviations used
I think that these days more American kids play soccer than american football. However, that sport is far better designed for television coverage than is soccer. You have a play, and then a break, and then another play. Gives you time to swig a beer or chomp on a bratwurst. You can watch a whole game whilst getting thoroughly drunk and yet not miss a single part of the action, even with bathroom breaks. I think that accounts a lot for its popularity.
American football should appeal to wargamers, as well. It's a sport of taking enemy territory; and to be truly successful, it requires a balanced attack combined with a tenacious defense. Running plays and passing plays can be compared to infantry and cavalry thrusts (with long bombs being parachute drops?).

And soccer can be thought as being a fluid, running battle with no clear lines of demarcation.

But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage.
