EARLIEST KNOWN CHEMICAL EVIDENCE OF BEER
circa 3500-3100 B.C.
NOVEMBER, 1992--Researchers in the Museum Applied Science Center for Archaeology (MASCA) at The University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania, analyzed an organic residue from inside a pottery vessel dated circa 3500-3100 B.C. from the site of Godin Tepe in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran. Their findings provide the earliest known chemical evidence of beer in the world. Archaeological chemist Dr. Patrick E. McGovern and organic chemist Dr. Rudolph H. Michel carried out a chemical Feigl spot test on a pale yellowish residue that filled grooves within an ancient jug; the tests were positive for oxalate ion. The Feigl spot test is a standard chemical technique, though previously unemployed for this purpose. Calcium oxalate (the calcium salt from the oxalate ion) is a major component of "beerstone" and settles out on the surfaces of fermentation and storage tanks of barley beer, as the researchers believe occurred with the ancient residue.

I imagine beer is as old as mans ability to ferment.

The Ancient Egyptians drank a lot of beer too... Not as far back as this Iranian thing (which I didn't know about, thanks mm), but still several centuries BC.

Neat! There are written (well, carved) references to beer from about the same period or even a bit earlier. One is an ode to the Sumerian goddess of brewing, and the other is in the Gilgamesh story. Some anthropologists think that brewing was one of the motivations for organizing into cities and starting down the road to civilization!

LOL Mike [:D]
Funny this should come up now. When I did my degree (in Archaeology) there was a conversation once down the SU bar about what evidence has been found for the earliest beer consumption. We never did get around to agreeing on an answer for that one [:D]

I drink both. Sometimes on the same night [;)]
I really like Wine Faber. Red wine for me. A fine Shiraz, Merlot or Rioja for me.
If i'm out with mates though it generally starts with Beer in the pub and then maybe Wine in a restaurant.

That looks a sound plan, Steven. Maybe I'll adopt it tonight......some Leffe Blond in the pub followed by ......well wine!

Damn, that was the time Croats and some of the related Slavic people lived there, just before migrating north, then southwest.
You certainly can't tell that by the dubious quality of our brews nowadays... [8|]

I'm in with Patrick, most beer is just nasty to my taste buds. It also gave me hangovers you would not believe.
I am currently drinking Maker's Mark. A bourbon made in Kentucky. I like it straight, with ice, or with seven-up and ice. If Maker's is not available, other bourbons or wiskey will do for the short term. Hard liquor never gave me hang overs like beer and wine do.[8D]

Actually, first priority was a WOMAN. Maybe Adam should have traded two ribs for BEER instead of one rib for Evil - er, I mean Eve. Never trust a cheap bargain... [:D] [;)]
