I kind of figured the translator didn't work very well. When I took the phrase it gave me and asked for a translation back to English, it came up with some weird sentences.

And yes, patrick the japanese kanjis are chinese in origin, but while the chinese have simplified their kanjis, the japanese have kept them in their original more complicated form. For example: Sakkana (fish) in japanese is written like this : 魚　(not sure if you can read it). The chinese version has a straight line at the bottom instead of the 4 little dots I believe?

But actually yes I do believe if we add up the total number of languages spoken we should get quite an impressive amount! My first language is French personally.

On another note, the japanese just made a film about the last days of the Yamato, it is called 男達のやまと, roughly translated it means "the men's Yamato". It looks fairly good but I have yet to drag my ass to a theater to see it.

Yep, I can see the fish kanji "fish " - it is actually the chinese word for fish![X(] Yep, it is now simplify by replacing 4 dots with one horizontal line. I think your job of learning Chinese is not that difficult now that fish is alike in Chinese and Japanese. It is a matter of practice. So your mothertongue is French- said to be the most beautiful language in the world![:D]

Humm, The Men' s Yamato. That is interesting. [X(] Too bad it is not available here. Wonder what is the next World War 2 movie coming out of Hollywood[&:]

I speak a little bit of Japanese. I spent 2 years in Japan and started to learn the language but couldn't speak monotone. Really difficult language to us, but of all the Japanese I worked with they felt english was a much harder language. The item the Japanese folks had the hardist time with was shifting meanings of words in english. Some of the folks I worked with had handheld translators and when they put in a word sometimes what came out in english was absolutely halarious.

actually I agree english is one of the easiest I know. And japanese is waay over rated only the writing is difficult the grammar is very easy (comparable to english![;)])

I don't know Japanese language is easy or not.
Maybe broken Japanese and Japanese dialect are hard to understand...
If an old Japanese man who is living Oominato talk to Kagoshima's old man, they totally cannot understand each other maybe.
I think Indonesian is much easier[:D]
How about Esperanto?

i can understand polish language,and MT can understand croatian (not all, but enough to get a picture). Well, it is logical, since the both languages are slavic.

Term, do Danish people understand Norwegians? I guess they can....

IMO, the toughest european language to learn is hungarian....
