SB Audigy problems with XP...anybody help?

Post by Paul Vebber »

Then again I can't get my SB Audigy sound card to work...massive digital distortion and the effects don't work at all (no-sound in efects mode)...I'm about to return it for a Santa Cruz...

Anybody out there savy on Audigy/XP configuration troubleshooting? It gives me a "Windows has recovered from a major error" every time I boot and it seems to be in the effects processor. I get decent sound form the analog jack into my Boston Acoutics Digital Theater 6000 speaker set, but after 5-10 seconds it starts to degrade with increasing pops and crackles. Using the Digital connection (using a bit of a jury rig RCA to mini-plug connection)is far worse with massive digital feedbackwhen you change the volume and try to do the speaker test.

I tried the SB news group but no joy...anybody have any possible solution, or alternative other than the TB Santa Cruz? (I don't want to spend more than $100 and am not a digital musician...)

In the for what its worth deptartment, my Audigy Odyssey involved re-installing XP from scratch, upgrading my BIOS, finding new VIA chipset drivers at www.VIATech.com, 2 hours on the phone with CL tech support, playing musical PCI slots for two nights to get the AUdigy isolated in its own IRG (and that required removing the ACPI drivers). Several othe random "monkey typing on keyboard" straws, and finally ready to give in and take it back and look for something else...

So a friend comes over last night and go to demo the problem to him, and I go to download some music and it prompts me to download Real Player. I use that so I say OK and show him the nasty pop and crackle problem and well commiserating, the RealPlayer install finishes and it prompts me to reboot. So I do.

Talking about other stuff, and not paying attention, suddenly the computer comes up and I hear crystal clear sound!

Ever since installing RealPlayer, the analog output works beautifully...

Go figure!
