SPWAW - How to start the game itself?

Post by swmeier »

All right, color me confused, if not stupid... To start the game I click the SPWAW icon, (doh!) and the title credits and little movie plays. I assume I should be able to wait for the movie to end and get some sort of Game play screen, but once the credits are finished, the title screen is gone and control goes back to Win 2000. Is there something obvious I am missing? If not, I suspect some sort of driver problem, but before I go down that road I wanted to make sure I am indeed 'starting' the game correctly... I also note that hitting the space bar stops the credits, but control again goes back to Win 2000. Anyone have any thoughts on this that might help me out?

Try starting the game from the mech.exe file thats in the game's root folder. This will by pass the video intro.

Just tried that...and the screen goes blank, then control again returns to Win 2000. Nothing else happens. BTW, this is the 5.01 version I downloaded. Also tried upgrading to the 7.0 version but got the same result.

It was not in the root, but it was in SND/Stream - I copied it to the root, but no change when I run the mech.exe. BTW, I see the following failure messages in the logfile.txt:

[File Operations 2]
Copy: C:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World At War\MGN\gs.ini E:\WINNT *FAILED*
Copy: C:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World At War\mgn\spwawclient.jpg E:\WINNT\System32 *FAILED*
Copy: C:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World At War\MGN\laser1.wav E:\WINNT\System32 *FAILED*

I do not have a C:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World At War\MGN. It wasn't created during the install. Maybe I have a bad install exe?

Sorry I didnt eman for you to put that file in the root folder. you are correct that it should be in the SND/Stream folder. Sorry about that.

It wouldn't hurt to do a reinstall at all.

Turns out that I had to turn on the hardware acceleration in Win2000...and then the game plays. The problem on my system is that Windows can't display anything better than 256K colors with acceleration at that level, and the game requires at least high color. So I end up setting acceleration and color level, playing the game, and resetting the acceleration and color level for 'normal' operation. I see a new computer in my future.

Thanks for all your help
