Musashi Sinks

Post by String »

Today is a day of mourning for all of the empire. After a valiant struggle against much superior enemy surface forces the might battleship Musashi finally ran out of its luck and was beaten to death by a much larger enemy force. In a night where the waters around Koepang were filled with allied torpedoes, the great ship succumbed to its wounds and settled in the bottom of Koepang bay, alongside with many of it's victims and companions.

And ends, after that several other rounds of combat occured, with Musashis escorts being sunk to the last ship and one of minelayers also sent to the bottom
The sinking of CLAA Capetown is of little consolation. A few allied DD's also sank. But BB Musashi has done her duty, first by keeping the enemy off for a few days for the convoy with the 31st Division to reach Koepang and then tonight by distracting enemy warships so that the convoy could unload safely.

Revenge is a dish best served cold

Post by String »

Today it became apparent what I meant with Musashi doing her duty. My main battleline of 5 battleships, Mutsu, Nagato, Yamashiro, Haruna and Hyuga entered Koepang bay tonight and delievered a nice smackdown to the allied fleet there. I've edited it out but enemy Tf1010 continued to land troops

OK this is very dissapointing and the lack of LRCAP is hurting now as String kills off my cripples while his retire to safe pastures.

Thank God for the RN taking down Musashi

At the moment it is about even I think in terms of absolte losses although I have suffered a lot more damaged ships in the 30 - 50 sys damage range

Idaho for Musashi
I have lost more Cruisers but to be frank I can afford to lose them he has three CA's that will be in yards for a while and at least one CL that sank.

I am very dissapointed in the inability of 4 US BB's to take out Musashi and Kirishma it took a WW1 vintage R class to do the job not good. (xp really does count in these fights I guess no one ever said the 15" guns of the R class werent good guns !!!)

I need to regroup a little as opposed to a quick smash and grab this is going to be the pivotal battle in the Celebes Sea.

The only good news is that my trnsports are relatively unharmed and can proceed to Sledgehammer. (which Ihave decided will proceed with my other 10 BB"s as cover !!!)

I have 30,000 combat troops ashore now and another 50,000 avaialabe when required althpugh getting them ashore will be difficult.

I can keep those airfields suppressed I think in which case neither side will have great LR CAP.

Can String keep 5 BB's unsinkable by my LBA and screen (very sinkable to 500lbers) in range of 400+ Heavies and Mediums for long !!!!

I suspect KB will be along soon which is fine a 500 lber can kill them quite easily.

As I said I expect this to turn into a lil standoff much like Guadalcanal

I wont commit heavies to Koepang as I cannot LRCAP he wont hang about because I will bomb his screen to the stone age if he does.

Overall a tactical and strategic victory for the IJN (applauds String) but not ye as decisive as say Canton was.

With the amount f supplis I have ashore I think I can stop him kicking me off the island for a while.

Unfortunately, somewhere along the way during the various upgrades of the game, Japanese BBs became "Gods of the Seas". No one knows why.
I suspect KB will be along soon which is fine a 500 lber can kill them quite easily.

Don't "bet the farm" on that. Likewise, somewhere along the way Japanese CV deck armor became similar in characteristics to Japanese BB deck armor.

Essentially the only weapon that will sink the IJN is torpedoes, so find as many Avengers as you can and move them forward. You can leave the tac-bombers for attacking transports...
I wont commit heavies to Koepang as I cannot LRCAP he wont hang about because I will bomb his screen to the stone age if he does.

What version are you playing? Have you seen what Tojos and Tonys do to Allied bombers in versions 1.50 and up?

Cheers -

Thankyou Andy for the kind words.

ADavidB - I wouldn't call the japanese BB's the king of the seas actually. I've managed to inflict serious damage to them in my own PBEM's as Allies. Namely the sinking of Nagato by PoW in the 3vs3 PBEM.

Anyway, today continued to be day MOSTLY in japanese favor, again I edited out some unimportant parts from the combat report and ships not hit during the air bombardments

The Kido Butai, on a lookout for damaged ships around the western tip of australia, destroyed a small convoy of 4 TK's 2 AK's, PG, SC, AVD and most importantly AR Ajax.

The loss of this AR will give him difficulties with all those damaged ships (hopefully).

Meanwhile he is continuing to supress Koepang airfield. Results are mixed.

Andy returns to Koepang in force. Battleships New Mexico and Washington squared off with Nagato, Mutsu, Fuso, Yamashiro and Hyuga.
What followed was a series of bloody engagements, in which BB Mutsu was sadly hit by two torpedoes, 2 16" shells and sunk as a result of progressive flooding [:(] She did manage to put several 16" shells into DD Le Triomphant as a parting gift just moments before she sank.

In total the japanese lost 1 BB, 1 DD and had 1 BB, 1 DD damaged.

The allies lost 2 CL, 11 DD and had 2 BB, 1 CL , 3 DD damaged. Just two enemy DD's managed to escape any serious damage.

We had a nice chance for revenge during the day though when planes from CV Hiyo and Junyo launched and sank BB New Mexico 120 miles southwest of Koepang.

The loss of BB Mutsu is really annoying, in light of this otherwise so successful battle. Yet the allied forces on the island, 7th Australian and 1st USMC are still trapped and when they tried to attack our own forces yesterday they failed miserably.

I had forgot some destroyers and an AD in port at Koepang. Today andy launched a massive raid which sank allof them [:o] In return my carriers sank two of his fleeing destroyers between Koepang and Derby. Lang and Nizam iirc.

Another thing of note was that CA Kako succumbed to her wounds and sank at Kendari. [:o]

OK so far on the Timor campaign I have lost 2 BB's (New Mexico/Idaho) several cruisers (four of five I think) and about 18 DD's

String has lost 2 BB's (Musashi and Mutsu) 1 CA/ 1 CL and about 8 DD's I think.

Overall not to bad for the allies.

What this doesnt spell out is that I have suffered a lot more damage and have a far higher proportion of my fleet with bad combat damage whereas most of String's cripples escaped.

A large proportion of my fleet is in the 50 - 80% damage level which will require a 2 month journey to West Coast Ports then a few months to repair.

This isnt so bad as my Carrier Arm wont need those escorts for at least six months and ill be getting respawned CA's and CL's quite soon to replace early war losses.

Andy
A disproportionate share of my DD losses have bee to good UK surface combat DD's I really really need more screening units for my RN TF's.

Ouch Ouch Ouch

Just added up my losses

24 DD's Sunk
2 DMS Sunk
5 CL's (Danae, Birmingham, Capetown, Nashville and Van Heemskirk)
2 BB's New Mexico and Idaho

I may also have lost a CA I am unsure I will need to check.

Actually on the face of it that aint to bad.

the CL's I lost well the 2 US ones will respawn and the 3 RN ones were old ships.

Both the BB's were slow BB's

The real pain is my DD losses although I appear to get c 20 per month of this class including DE's so these losses are sustainable.

The real issue is the 30,000 men trapped on Timor and the many damaged ships arriving at Sydney now.

Okay.. a more detalied report on the naval losses, first the japanese.
  • BB - 2. [:o] The worst imo. Mutsu and Musashi, both lost at Koepang. While Musashis loss was acceptable, she did enable me to hang on to Koepang, hadn't she stayed there then I could not have managed to transport the 31st division there and the base would have fallen and.. well you can guess the rest of it.
  • CA - 3. Two were lost in a chase of fleeing allied units near Canton island in the first failed allied offensive. Sadly they stumbled upon some battleships and one was sunk by air next day, the other limped to Canton but later sank while on transfer to Tarawa. Canton was under regular attack by then from allied air.
  • CL - 4. Not overly worried here, besides Yubari they are all venerable ships. 1 lost in an attempt at surface raiding, another at a feint at Aleutians, Yubari at Buin at the very start of the game. (always happens to me) and finally the last CL (Kuma i think) was lost at Koepang alongside with Musashi.
  • DD - 18. Well this number has grown a lot lately [:(] The Timor battle taking it's toll. Quite a few lost to my own stupidity by leaving them docked in Koepang *sigh*. Still, nothing unmanageable though and it should be less than historical losses anyway. It used to be 4 until february .. i think.
  • PT - 6. Heh.. yes, the japanese do have PT boats.. shitty exp with shitty armament, weak speed.. all 6 sunk while attempting a harassing raid at Darwin early in 1943. Don't miss them a bit
  • SS - 24. Laser guided DC's have taken their toll. Quite a few glen carrying subs sunk too. I have withdrawn them from convoy raiding duties so losses have been low lately.
  • MSW - 5. Hey, even the japanese get those back [:D]
  • PG - 4. Can't really remember anything about their loss
  • PC - 1. The one area where the allies have equal losses to japan [:'(]
  • ML - 4. All small 300 or 600 edurance dinghies.. didn't do much with them anyway
  • AD - 2. Now this is sad, I only have one left. One i lost during the first month in Kwajalein to a submarine placed mine, another just a week ago at Koepang [:(]
  • AO - 1. I lost one?
  • MSW - 5. Nothing to say here, one lost here, one there.. can't remember anything special
  • AK - 3. Surprisingly low[:)]
  • AP - 8. [8D]

And that's that for japanese ship losses. Almost half, or perhaps even more, points have been lost during the battle for Koepang.

And now a short post to give an overview of the losses suffered by my opponent [:D] Looking at the ship losses screen still brings some good memories back to me in this otherwise so gloomy game.
  • CV - 7. Wonderful. All prewar US carriers + Essex sunk. 4 were lost by Andys predecessor. Hornet, Wasp and Essex by Andy.
  • CVE - 6. Another nice bonus.
  • BB - 4. All oldies, 2 sunk at Canton battle, 2 at Koepang. Somewhat useless but they are still points and they still carried big guns.
  • CA - 10. He gets all of them back
  • CL - 8. He gets all of them back
  • CLAA - 4. Good, the less CLAA's he has to escort his carriers with the better.
  • DD - 66. Wow, now I know the allies get more DD's and DE's than they know what to do with by '45 .. but right now i'd think he is running a bit short on escorts? Not that it matters much, even one is sufficient to send any of my subs rock bottom
  • DM - 2. Pesky little buggers
  • DMS - 10. Given the amount of mines at most japanese bases.. well I'm very glad [:D]
  • AVD - 6. [&:]
  • PG - 11. It's still points
  • PC - 1. Yes, he hasn't lost more than I have
  • AR - 1. From the KB strike at the western tip of australia. He's swimming in them probably anyway
  • AD - 2. Points
  • MSW - 25. Very good, the less minesweepers he has the better. I sank over 10 ships with mines at Canton island (had 6k+ mines there)
  • SC - 11. Eleven ships, eleven points
  • SS - 34. Good, the less the better. I think SS Whale will soon be added to this list. She was hit by a Helen and by an Ida today near the western western coast of Kiyushu. 11 of those subs sunk are the ancient S class though. Regardless, he is moving them back close to my bases so I can sink them again [:'(]
  • AO - 5. I have no memories of sinking any AO's
  • TK - 27. From the days when KB was used for convoy raiding
  • AK - 84. [X(] ... see above
  • AP - 11. Nothing stellar
  • PT - 86. And the most numerous ship class sunk [:'(] .. god it must be dreadful to serve on them. I think I'm sinking them as fast as they come out of the shipyards [:D]

So that's all for the allied losses

What happened to your CAP? Are they worn out or did you forget to set them to CAP?
