Operation MO

Post by Mark VII »

The situation in the South Pacific. Landings just finished at Port Moresby with no opposition on the sea or in the air. Ground losses from landings and enemy arty light. Operation supported by KB lurking nearby, 5xBB's and many CA's plus escorts. Strong air assets at Lae and Rabaul looking for Allied interference. Ground assault to begin in a couple of days.

Most of the Solomons under Japanese control covering the East flank.

Edward Murrow from London

Post by Mark VII »

Image
This is London. I am standing a block from Winston Churchill's underground headquarters. It is 11 in the morning and the skies are currently clear of Nazi warplanes. A source has just told me of a disturbing radio message received a hour ago from the Malayan HQ in downtown Singapore.

The message as told to me said, quote: Japanese tanks and infantry are only 100 yards from the HQ and firing on us. The old man has decided to surrender and has ordered all communications equipment destroyed. This will be the last message from Singapore. God save the Queen. Unquote.

The source stated that the message was signed by a Captain and they were checking to see if that Captain is currently in Malaya to help confirm the validity of the message. I am withholding the name of this man at the request of my source. Churchill’s headquarters is somewhat of a panic as they try to gain more information. They are not sure if only the Headquarters in Singapore surrendered or if the whole garrison and city surrendered.

If indeed Singapore has surrendered, this would be a serious blow to British prestige. The war in the Pacific has been raging for less than two months and if the Gibralter of the Pacific has already surrendered, I don’t know what to think.

I have also received a report that the Japanese Army has a infantry division across the Sittang River just North of Rangoon. That would mean that the rest of Burma is now cut off from supply from the port of Rangoon and that any food and fuel would have to travel hundreds of miles thru the jungle from India. Also mentioned were several infantry brigades and a armored regiment trapped along the Salween River near Rahaeng. And if that is not bad enough, there are reports of a major Japanese landing a Port Moresby that would threaten Australia.

It is said that the sun never sets on the British empire. These are dark days here at the end of January 1942, I fear things may get darker.

Signing off from a concerned London, I’m Edward R. Murrow, CBS news.

Singapore Falls

Post by Mark VII »

BANZAI!!! BANZAI!!! BANZAI!!!

Tenno Haika Banzai!!!!!!!!!!!!

Singapore has surrendered 19 days ahead of schedule. The Brits did damage the port somewhat but 27.000 supply and 9000 fuel were captured. Don't know how much went up in flames but we are happy with the haul. There is some mopping up to do in North Malaya but the campaign is mostly over. You would think in real life these units would surrender as all hope is now lost.

Last turn Ed sent the 2nd Burma Rifles across the Sittang I'm sure in a delaying action. They got thumped badly in their crossing the river shock attack so this turn I ordered the 33rd Division to shock attack them back with a follow order. The plan works and on the 28th they cross the Sittang and are forced into a shock attack against three defenders. At least one of the defenders is the devestated 2nd Burma Rifles in which the 33rd suffers only 400 casualties. The hex still belongs to the Brits but Rangoon is now isolated from the rest of Burma and the 15 units in Rangoon can only escape via air and sea(if they dare). The 8 units defending the Salween opposite Rahaeng are now really in serious trouble as they are flanked via the road and have to draw supply thru the jungle back to India. Another naval bombardment and airfield airstrikes have further reduced the AVG and damaged the airfield complex even more. Over the last four days, 40 P40B's have been destroyed in the air and on the ground! One would think that Rangoon's aircover will be fleeing soon.

On Luzon, San Marcello falls with the 4th USMC Rgt, the 1st, 21st and 31st PA Divisions, the 88th Field Arty, the 803 EAB and two BF's all surrendering. 12 units are left in Bataan but eight of them recently retreated from Clark Field and should be hurting. The end is very near in the Philippines!

The Amboina and Port Moresby ops proceeding as planned, ground assaults soon.

This photo just in from Malaya shows General Tomoyuki Yamashita accepting the surrender of Commonwealth forces in Singapore on January 27, 1942. It took only 50 days for Yamashita, the "Tiger of Malaya" to overrun Malaya and Singapore forcing the surrender of over 60,000 allied troops.

Operation Burma Freedom

Post by Mark VII »

The situation in Burma the morning of Jan. 29, 1942. It would seem that the Allied units across the river from Rahaeng are in big trouble. I would also wonder about the 15 allied units holed up in Rangoon. This would seem to be a major part of the Commonwealth Army that used to be defending India. I have seen a couple of other Tank & Infantry Brigades who are now in Rangoon. I would be surprized if they were able to get past the 33rd Division. If these guys are not allowed to escape India could be wide open to a Japanese invasion. To be honest this was not my orginal plan but Imperial HQ is now war gaming additional options and will soon pass along their recommendations.

Situation Jan 29, 1942 in the Philippines. The campaign is winding down with some units already being shipped off to other areas. In no more than a week Bataan should be forced to surrender leaving those two PA divisions at Aparri which will be left to starve for a while. Three divisions, a infantry brigade and several tank, arty and engineer Rgt's will be ready for deployment elsewhere as early as the middle of February.

Amboina captured 1/29-1/30/42

Post by Mark VII »

Somewhat slow couple of days. Rangoon continues to get pounded via air and sea. Amboina is overrun with no problems, should of attacked two days ago! The Operation MO invasion force will begin the ground assault Jan. 31.

Still have not figured out how I am finding out about Allied minefield clearing op's at locations hundreds to thousands of miles from nearest Japanese units? Got to love that R&D department back in Tokyo when they developed those miniture radio transmitters mounted on mines[:D]

Forgot to save the combat report. After several weeks of alternating long weekends for both of us we are back at it.

From my notes it was a mostly quiet two days. Port Moresbv, Bataan, and areas in Burma all continue to be reduced. Rangoon is pasted again via air and sea and I am not seeing any air resistance so it would seem that the RAF has abandoned lower Burma except for some long range raids from the Dacca area.

Planning and recon for Operation PG is now complete. Pagan is believed to be undefended and the 2nd Para is jumping in on tomorrow the 2nd. There will be a fighter escort plus some Zero's will be sweeping in case there is any enemy fighter resistance. Once secured hope to fly in a small BF so I can base fighters plus start running ground units into the interior of Burma up the road from Moulmein.

Air losses this turn
7 Martin's.......3 Zero's
6 Hurricane's..1 Tina
4 Hudson........1 Nell
3 B17C
3 Brewster
2 BlenheimIF

Operation PG proceeds as planned and no Allied opposition is encountered. The airfield at Pagan is reported as captured with no damage. The Japanese now have an operational airfield 180 miles behind Allied lines in Burma. Rangoon continues to be pounded from the air and sea and the Brits offer no resistance. I hope that all of the airfield damage and airbase supply hits are draining off supply at isolated Rangoon!

The invasion of Java really started on the 1st when a company from the 35th Brigade was Fast-Transported to Kragen. On the 2nd they seize the airfield and beach. The rest of the 35th X and a Base Force are right behind in transports. The Dutch Airforce and the RAAF finally get the range and get some hits on the follow-on TF's but the invaders are not slowed down. There seem to more Allied aircraft on Java than I thought. Good thing I planned to sieze some airfields before the main invasion so there will be aircover.

At Port Moresby the troops rest while the artillery maintains pressure on the defenders. The attack will continue on the 4th. So far there has been no attempt to interfere in Operation MO.

S-37 is reported as Sunk.

Ed tells me that he has a surprise planned for the 4th and 5th. We shall see!

RN shows up

Post by Mark VII »

It had been a normal day of operations against Rangoon. Before dawn of Feb 4, the Atago, Takao, Chokai and the Sendai with DD's had bombarded the cra# out of Rangoon once again then retiring to reload. Air recon had sighted a enemy sub lurking about the day before so a Anti-Sub hunter-killer TF was sent in to sink it or run it off.

During the morning of the 4th there was a vague report of four unidentified allied ships milling around just south of Dacca. Then late afternoon a Betty on air-search reported seeing the British BB Royal Sovereign headed South only 200 sea miles from Rangoon. The local naval HQ did not know what to make of that report. What would the Royal Navy be doing sending a BB deep into our area of heavy air cover. It was decided that the pilot must of seen Kongo and radioed in an incorrect location. A radio message was sent to the CO of the unit to have a chat with the crew about ship identification and navigation.

Guess what shows off Rangoon the night of the 4/5th?

Image

needless to say that the ASW TF was wiped out. Ouch! Ed said he was looking for larger game I would suspect my CA bombardment TF. Good thing I sent them back for more ammo. Now we will see how the Eastern Fleet does trying to escape when every aircraft in SE Asia is looking for them.

An interesting turn. The Eastern Fleet is risked off the coast of Burma with a bold run by 2xBB's, 3xCA's, 5xCL's and 4xDD's on a anti-shipping hunt at Rangoon. I'm sure the battered defenders of Rangoon that night enjoyed the light show offshore considering for once there were no incoming shells. A Japanese ASW TF was destroyed but I think myself lucky as my bombardment cruiser TF was just missed by this raid by less than a day. Some Betty's are moved up Moulmein so I hope the retreating Brits will have a rough time getting away.

The land assault resumes at Port Moresby and good gains are made as the forts are reduced to zero. The Aussies here have put up good resistance but the line is cracking and PM should fall within the next two days.

The ABDA is fighting with all they have at the Kragen beachhead. Lots more aircraft than I thought are flying including some 55xP40E's coming out of Batavia. My Oscars took a minor beating! This could be another 'happy time' for my Zero's once I get established ashore. Both regiments of the 35th Brigade are mostly landed so they will be moving out directly.

Air recon missions to Noumea tell me there are 19xF4F-4's there, I smell an American Carrier!

PM surrenders, 2/6-2/7/42

Post by Mark VII »

Australian forces surrender at Port Moresby at 1500. The situation had become untenable after elements of the 56th Division had broken thru Aussie lines in three places. After the airfield was captured the local commander honorably surrendered to avoid further loss of life to his brave soldiers. A squadron of Aussie Catalina's failed to escape and were also captured!

Up in the Burma sector, we start the day with the majority of the British Eastern Fleet only 60 miles west of Rangoon also attempting to escape the wrath of the Japanese airpower. Since only one Daitai of Betty's and the Sally Daitai decided to attack, not much damage was done and the RN made good their escape. Because of the sortie of the Eastern Fleet, Operation AY(Akyab)already at sea was ordered to loiter 180 miles West of Akyab and try to stay out of the way of the RN. They are sighted and receive some long range attacks from the RAF in the Dacca area. The Surface escort does its job and attracks the Allied air attacks, Kongo shrugs off a 500lb'er with only paint scratches. Now that the Eastern Fleet is back in port, Operation AY will proceed.

The Kragen beachhead is attracting lots of Allied air attention including what I would suspect the last RAF Vildebeest sqn. Thing are heating up, the oscar's have taken some losses but have defended the transports well. Zero's will be in the air next day and we will see how well the Allied fighters do then!

Ed makes a submarine commando raid on Wotje. The company from the American 111th Rct does not do well!

Off Timor, Aussie Beauforts make their first combat apperance and fil to get any hits. As the Japanese, I do not like BForts!

Akyab landing 2/8-2/9/42

Post by Mark VII »

A quiet turn, most notable is Operation AY and a reinforced SNLF has landed at Akyab. Recon tells me that only a British BF is defending so hopefully it should fall during the first attack on the 10th. If Ed resists with reinforcements this could become a major battle. Pretty sure whats left of the AVG is based here so Ed has a choice of flying them out and saving them or leaving them while resisting and risking capture should the Brits lose this battle.

At the Kragen beachhead Zero's have taken over the CAP duties. The Japanese pilots are still outnumbered in the sky but more Allies are being shotdown than Japanese.

Akyab taken 2/10-2/11/42

Post by Mark VII »

As suspected, Akyab was defended by only a BF and Operation AY was a complete success with the aviation mechanics fleeing in disorder in the direction of India. Only the RAF offers any resistance but only get a couple of minor hits on some BB's as the transports arrive and depart unmolested.

ABDA air continues to fight fiercely at the Kragen beachhead. Heavy air batttles continue and the RAF #100sqn flying Vildebeests breaks through and puts three fish into Isuzu. After 90 minutes of frantic damage control efforts to stem the flooding, she rolls over to port and sinks with most of the crew. Damn those stupid biplanes! This effort to get a foothold and airbase on Java is costing me. 13 Zero's are shotdown but 26 P40E's plus some bombers are splashed. Maybe I am wearing down the Java airforce???

Landings begin at Tarakan. The Dutch resist with all they have. I swear that the Dutch fight the best of all the Allied forces! Dutch forces on Sinkep Island fight off a ground assault.

Bataan Surrenders 2/12-2/13/42

Post by Mark VII »

Another massive surrender of American troops. Bataan falls 2 months ahead of schedule. Only two PA divisions remain on Luzon. The 11th&71st PA XX's advanced onto Aparri after I captured it and are now isolated and surrounded in an enemy base being pounded evey turn from the air and sea. There are two other PA divisions stranded on some islands(soon to be IJA bombing ranges) and a PA BF lost in Mindanao, the Philippine Campaign is mostly over! The good news is that 2 divisions, a brigade, several tank, arty and combat engineer units are now available for other operations.

Tarakan 2/14-2/15/42

Post by Mark VII »

The Tarakan operation proceeds now that the flanks are secure and the threat of air attack is low.

Battleship Division One (Yamashiro, Fuso, and Nagato) make their presense known off Rangoon. With near constant shore bombardments by Heavy Cruisers and Battleships, damage levels on the port and airfield stay in the 30-50 range every turn. I hope that supply is becoming an issue for the defenders!

Aussies began operations with Beaufort V-IX's a couple of days ago from Timor and Java. The BForts get their first hits. I do not like this aircraft!!!

It would seem to be the first major convoy into Pago Pago. Some AP's with a ground unit or two, a bunch of fuel and an AR ran over a picket Sub which survived to get off a contact report. I wonder if Ed is ready to play with his Carriers in the South Pacific?

Koepang 2/16-2/17/42

Post by Mark VII »

Deep in the Burmese jungle, in hex 31-34, which is separated from Rahaeng by the Salween River are 8 Commonwealth units struggling to delay the relentless Japanese advance. They have only been delaying the 55thXX, 1st Tnk Rgt and 15th Army HQ as the rest of the Japanese Army has been running behind them from the Moulmein bridgehead into the interior of Burma. After their quick victory at Singapore, two divisions plus support units have been sea transported to Moulmein and have advanced into the rear of the trapped 14th Ind. XX, 44th Ind. X, 255thInd Tnk X, 1st UK FA Rgt, A'Ind FA Rgt, and the 21th,24th and 25th UK Mtn Arty Rgt's. The Japanese Division rested for two days and are now fresh. On with the attack and these Commonwealth Soldiers would be smart to surrender now to have any hope of saving themselves.

Also in Burma I had the idea to use the river "shock attack" rule to my advantage. The plan was to advance across the river into Mandalay and trigger the shock attack against the Base Force defending and hopefully forcing a retreat and catching some fighters on the ground before Ed could evacuate them. I love it when a plan works to perfection as 10 Hurricane II's and 10 Buffalo's are destroyed on the ground.[:D]

Koepang falls after one attack and Timor is now cleared of enemy units. The next afternoon after capture, several squadrons of B17's fly in from Darwin but do little damage. Good to know where they are!
