Hell In The Pacific

Post by KG Erwin »

Combat Team 5, a reinforced United States Marine battalion under the command of Col G Higginbotham, landed on the south Pacific island of Guadalcanal, seven months to the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. We have advanced to a position west of the landing beach, and have dug in. Intelligence reports that the Japanese have landed reinforcements, and they intend to counterattack our beachhead. The division commander has ordered my battalion to repel the assault.

Tenaru, map1-- The northern section of my defense position (1st, 2nd, 3rd Raiders and 1st Company):

Tenaru, map 4--Not content to sit in my foxholes, I push the northern flank forward, and look what's coming my way: the stuff is about to hit the fan-- that M2A4 is in a perfect spot.

Tenaru, map6--The Japanese response-- where did they get all that freakin' artillery? There's American troops under that explosion and flaming jungle. [X(]

Erwin, when will you continue this report? Is it easy to spot Japanese in the jungle? I haven't played the pacific war yet though I sure intend to. How far away can you see the bad guys in the jungle? What're your arty settings? Do you suffer any casualties?

Looks like with infantry blocking the whole front you don't need to move anything. I usually only have enough for less than a quarter or so of the front to be covered so I gotta keep moving stuff around according to what the bad guys are doing. Do you keep a reserve?

I hope that bombardment you took messed you up good. [:'(] Sorry, just I'm trying to cheer on the AI a little. More pictures!!! [:D]

TBT, it is a light rain, so visibility is 600 yards (see map 4). In the jungle, though, you can usually figure on a line of sight of 200 yards or less.

As for reserves, I keep the tanks, the BAR squads and the engineers out of the front line on the narrow maps.

Offboard arty is set at 100%, which does inflict casualties, but is better for suppression. The real killers are MGs and mortars, especially at ranges of 200-250 yards.

Erwin, what graphics pack do you use and is it 8.4? Where can I download it? Does it mess up your OOBs? I like that moldy green color you have.

So light rain makes it easier to see? Is it usually foggy? I haven't scrapped in the jungle yet so I don't know. I'm gonna do a USMC camp against Japan after my German one is through or maybe start concurrently. I want those 50cal gatling guns the marines have.

Okay more pictures!!! [:@]

The terrain and unit icons are from the Depot Multi-Mod. The OOB set is my own custom variation of 8.3. At present, I'm also using the latest beta release of 8.4 (not available to the general public yet). In other words, my SPWaW setup is a hybrid mix.

Ya Gunny, I'm gonna verbally bitchslap u for what TBT pointed out, and he's just a beginner. Must be nice to have the points to cover the whole map with a double layered sawtooth formation of heavy infantry,?? might wanna try three leaf clover formations with the reserve tanks puttering along the stem following the grunts, for two reasons.Your setup looks to mutch like an old indian bengal tiger hunt,(form static line, advance in unison.) makes your line too cyceptable to predictable path for enemy Arrty, and eventhough it can't be flanked u will still have to weaken at the squad level the overall line to shore up any heavy pockets of resistance or breaches caused by losses from the Arrty. cloverleafs can sway their pettles allowing each squad to have three lines of fire, one being behind them so they act much more efficiently for probing with more firepower than a strait line looking forward. In this situation, Riun, I'm on the defense, so I'm easily outnumbered 2 to 1. I have the recon patrols set back on the both flanks for a reason. The Raider units will slowly advance and start turning inward, in attempt to squeeze the bad guys in the center into a pocket. The center of my line (map 2) is funnel-shaped, which could help serve this purpose. Meanwhile, the recon patrols will move to the northern & southern map edges, maintaining contact with the encircling forces. Each wing will also have an attached tank platoon.

Tenaru, map 7--turn 11. The "hinge of the door" is highlighted by the crosshairs. Identified Japanese units are targeted by 60 & 81mm mortars. My attempt at a double envelopment won't be happening, as the enemy in the north is too strong, and their artillery is keeping my units too suppressed for an advance in force.
