crown of glory

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

the downloadable version is 1.00, you'll need one patch to bring it current.

The reason the downloable versions are not always the patched versions are many but let's just take a look at one. Consider that every time a file goes "gold" and acceptable for shipping or download you can bet that a world of testing time went into making sure everything about that file works. Not every bug is caught but you'd be surprised at how many things prevent a file from going gold.

That being said, they would have put the updater through the testing process. Then, should they decide to update the files in the downloadable version they have to rebuild the installer and re-test all that. I'd rather they just get started on the next patch, personally but I can understand why you'd want an updated version as well. Consider though that there's only one update to download...if it was 3 or 4 then you might have reason to complain. As it is the single update you need is rather light.

As to why they don't fix the boxed version. Just consider that they'd have to go and re-open all those boxes and replace all those discs...not to mention a few sheets of paper with the update notes...oh yeah, and the testing...eek. It's more of a nightmare than updating the downloadable versions.

As to patched or not patched, much has been said to both versions up here. :) I've never used Kinkos but I've heard it's painless (aside from the money).

You put the rule manual on a pdf and you burn that on a cd then you walk outside into your car and crank that biotch but it just goes vrrrr vrrrr vrrrr and then you remember oh christ gas is like twenty dollars a gallon i am all out so then you walk the three miles to kinkos and say hey boy i say hey boy print this out for me so he does that and then you pay and as you walk home it begins to rain and you think man i know i should have bought that plastic cover because the index page is now all wet and you won't know where to look up the rules for upgrading your pitiful militia into elite smokepolers.

One of the reasons for not bundling the patches is that although we test on many machine configurations there are always problems that are machine-specific, and these problems can vary from program-build to program-build. So it may be the case that someone who has problems running, for example, a patch 1.3 on his machine might be able to run a patch 1.2 just fine.

We do generally revisit and update the store versions to pre-patched status on a periodic basis, particularly when we the size of the necessary patches starts getting a bit large. It's very likely that the store version will be updated within a month of the next update release, once we're sure it doesn't have any major issues.
