Upgrade and old saves in the beta

A couple of questions relating to the beta:

1> Will it be possible to upgrade from the beta release to the final patch or will a reinstall be in order?

2> Are old save games compatible with the beta patch?

I was unable to load a save game from 1.1 into the 1.2 beta. In fact, it made everyhing go really wonky.

the way the save files record data now, has been changed, so a fresh start will have to be made

I provided a little more detail in the beta feedback forum. Just, I play on a widescreen but the game, of course, switches to 1024x768. This isn't a problem but on display of the error (incorrect file type or somesuch error) the screen shifted for a second, then back then none of the buttons responded and only part of the screen was redrawn. Keyboard control worked fine so I was able to exit gracefully.
