SPWAW v2+ screen garbled

Post by Soliloquoy »

First: Thank you (Matrix, WB, et. al.) for the blood, sweat and tears that have been poured into this project.

Now, my problem. Image
After installing SPWAW v2 (and 2.1), I am now longer able to minimize SPWAW (or Alt-Tab) because when I subsequently maximize it again, the screen becomes garbled as though the V-Sync was mis-configured. SPWAW doesn't crash, but it not possible to play like in this condition. Even if you squint your eyes. Image
I didn't have this problem with v1.
Any hints? Or should I simply abandon the notion of tabbing out while playing?

This has always happened with me. I just alt-tab until it snaps out of it, which it inevitably will (just alt-tab over and over until it adjusts, which usually isn't more than 3 or 4 times needed).

No luck. It stays garbled after dozens of alt-tabs.

Something somewhat similar happens to me when I alt-tab out of the game - the SPWAW screen goes black after I go back into it. This only occurs if I keep windows explorer open - if I close explorer and go back into the game it's okay. Maybe that will help someone but doesn't sound like your problem. If the video is there but messy check your video drivers as Voriax says. The garbled video thing happened to me with v.1 if I escaped out of the video intro but I was able to avoid this by creating a shortcut to intro.exe to skip the opening video. That doesn't apply to v.2+ but is probably related to your video issue. Only other idea is to adjust your screen resolution and experiment - does that make sense? Hopefully there are some other idea's.

I have always had a simular problem. If I let the intro of the game play it's course my video resolution is horrible. I found if I quickly hit a key in order to skip the intro it usually comes back fine. If it doesn't I just start a scenario, end it and when the main menu pops back it clears itself up...go figure.

One thing you might try. Go to the shortcut icon that runs the game. Right click on it. Click properties.

Make sure in properties that it says maximized screen and close on exit button is clicked.

Try those two things and see if they help. If not, I don't have an answer.

Hello...

Works fine on my system, but I used to have this problem with MM VII, until I upgraded my Direct X drivers. This program is meant to work with Direct X 6.1 or 7.0a. If you have another driver, that may be the issue. If you have one of these drivers, you may need to download the newest video driver for your video card.

And, thank for your appreciation of our efforts.

Just for kicks see if your shortcut target is the autorun.exe or the spwaw.exe. I seem to have a smoother ride with the spwaw.exe.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I've got the most up-to-date drivers available, and I've got DirectX 7.0a installed. I tried everything mentioned above, but no dice. I neglected to mention that this is on a laptop, which I'm pretty sure complicates the issue. Oh, well. I'll just muddle through. <shrug>
