Use of Supplies for Rebuilding/Repairs

Post by mcaryf »

I am still new to the game but trying out the advanced supply option. I am becoming rather paranoid about repairing captured resource centres etc as I do not fully understand the risk that it might leave my forward units without supply and vulnerable to attack.

To be honest I do not much like the concept of universal supplies that are munitions one second and railway ties the next! I think it would be better if each production point could generate a unit that might itself be turned into supplies or repairs at the players specific choice but not automatically used as either. It is irritating when carefully positioned supplies can be dragged off to a relatively lower priority repair task and as far as I know repairs cannot be undone.

Does anybody have a good technique to recommend to avoid me inadvertently denuding my front line troops?

If you have some supplies at the front line you absolutely dont want used for repairs you move them away before doing the repair. Thats usually but not always possible - but its thje only way I know to handle the issue.

first thing is never play with auto or area supply, because if you're going to micro-manage your supply trucks those systems with drive you batty!

one of the worst things that can happen as axis is to rebuild a large province's resources or factories and then have the allies come in and attack it destroying everything you built up. it gets expensive when they destroy something you just invested 30-40 supply.

therefore I take the approach of rebuilding only whats needed. early on when germany has only 2 PP per factory, you don't really need those resource points, because you don't have enough factories to use them anyway. sure you can rebuild them for later turns when factory production increases, but you run the risk of the allies attacking and destroying it also. of course, if the resources are in the rear with no chance of being attacked, then rebuilding them is really only a question iof you have the supply available or not.

after that its really a matter of counting your factories and your resources to know what should be repaired and what can remain as standard supply truck. it a planning game at that point with no easy 'rule of thumb' to follow.

you can wing it and things may or may not work out, but when you time it perfectly from 3 turns before, thats what this game is all about.
