Do you keep "Escorts bombard" on ?? If so, you should change it to "Escorts do not bombard" since you lose DDs agains even medium caliber CD guns. Bombardment TF I use have BBs, CAs and DDs so that only BBs and CAs bombard. They have armour to withstand 6" CD guns and such. Only after first bombardment I switch "Escorts bombard" on *if* there was only meager CD gun fire against TF.

DDs and CLs have either no or very little armour. Even 75 mm gun will hurt those ships. CLs are very useful in invasion TF though, but CAs are even better. If you want to fight it out with CD batteries, be armoured. As Horatio Nelson said after he had lost an eye in battle against shore batteries: "Man who wants to fight shore batteries with ships is mad" [:D]

And to add:

Often BBs and CAs escape smaller CD and field gun fire totally since they are shooting with 8" and bigger guns that have superior range to usual transportable 6" field and CD guns. If you put escorts to bombard (DDs usually have 5" guns) or have CLs (usually 6" guns), TF will close into 6" gun range and you start to get lot more hits to your ships. With big guns you only have to fear immobile 8 " and bigger since your ships can shoot outside the range of smaller stuff. Almost all Base Forces and transportable CD units have smaller guns, not to mention field guns in other units.

Ditto sadukar's advice . will make dd's immune to CD fire and the smaller calibre guns i would imagine do far less damage than the big boys so not much firepower lost[&:] i guess

CA's in invasion tf's are great as shell magnets that otherwise would rip the transports to bits, not saying that you will be immune but losses will be a lot less with CA's .. aspecially after a turn or 2 as thay take out the CD guns.

recon (again that word :)) . helps with both bombing and bombardment results i believe . F5 best but you can use cats at a push . just remember to fly them a bit higher then 6k feet or they dont come back very often [:D][:D]

Thanks for the tip Sardaukar... I just checked and I did have the option escort do bombard on... In future operations I will change it off!!! Thankfully... just 1 DD was sunk on the bombardment of Baker Island. I'am dazzled that I did not even know about this option before you mentioned.

Yeah, Rob... I did learn about the importance of recon the hard way.... but from now on this mistake wohn't be repeated. How many CA's do you use in a invasion TF?

Seems that my opponent is still confident about the victory... He has challenged me to attempt an landing againts Baker Island! I don't know whether he is bluffing or what but he does seem confident... also he states that his KB pilots are around 90's with their experince.

It is a kind of a long wait for Hellcats to appear.... I think that I need to wait them but my patience is running out.

Anyway... here is the current situation...

Game date is 22nd of April 1943

India & Burma

ZzZzzZz.... the good news from this theatre is that I have 140 more Dakotas here that will soon start their supply runs to India and Burma.

This air to air battle was fought near Chandspur.... Japanese airforce did try to intercept a supply convoy heading to Chandspur... This caused me a quite few fighters but the supply TF was not hit!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Chandpur at 30,25

Japanese aircraft
A6M3 Zero x 22
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 4

Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Spitfire Vb: 12 destroyed, 1 damaged

Allied Ships
AK Empire Driver
AK Empire Taw
AK Empire Grenfell

Central & North Pacific

Operation Delfine has lost it's effectiveness... Just couple of hits and not that many enemy ship sightings around Japan... this means that he is now using alternative route to bring in supplies and such. This Japanese cargo ship was hit near Tokyo..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 68,44

Japanese Ships
AK Ryuzin Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Aoi Maru
DD Shikinami

Allied Ships
SS Bowfin

If this continues I have start thinking about new plans for future use of my submarines.

CV Lexington is now operational again... It is sailing to Pearl Harbour along with it's escorts. I have been thinking about replacing all the Dauntless and Avengers with allied Fighters... this action would bring in more CAP for my fleet! What do you think about this idea?

China

I did try assault the airfields at Sian last turn... but this didn't turn out too good since my P40N's refure to fly in force... because of this there is nomore bombing raids at least for next few days...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Sian , at 47,29

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 36

Allied aircraft
B-25J Mitchell x 65

B-25J Mitchell: 1 destroyed, 10 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
9 casualties reported

Airbase hits 1
Airbase supply hits 2

There is no ground combat to report... but my opponent has stated that he has not kained on China... whatever this means remains to be seen...!

Australia, NZ and South Pacific

The bombing raids againts Baker Island continues...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Baker Island , at 94,92

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 8
P-38G Lightning x 23
B-25J Mitchell x 84
PB4Y Liberator x 11
B-24D Liberator x 41

Allied aircraft losses
B-25J Mitchell: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
19 casualties reported

Airbase hits 7
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 76

...more aircraft are arriving to Canton Island along with more allied troops. This is the staging point for future assault.

I have also sent troops to occupy build up and occupy Wallis Island... there gives me a solid forward outpost too.

Timor have been bombed also and those garrisons occupying this island have suffered quite a few casualties.

Lunga and Kendari were bombed at night... but if my opponet is truthfull he has now stationed nigh fighters in order to maintaining his airplanes safety. These bombings have now stopped for time being.

RE: maxing fighters on Cv's for escort missions .. yes why not . just do not engage any enemy shipping if possible. As i think your planning on using the carriers to escort the invasion of Baker. maxing out on F4F is a good idea. maybe even use the marine ones that are carrier capable, just set them for cap duty when you get close or ops losses can be horrible.

as for how many CA's . as many as you can spare after CV and BB groups are set up. also use as many ships as possible. forget the 15-25 ship max. use 60 transports and 40 escorts if you hav them .. AA fire is pointles in a group that will be escorted by CV's . also gets you unloading faster and many gun equipped really helps .. humm 15 MSW .. 5 CA 5 CL and 10 DD escorts for 75 merchants and troop ships. however its worth having a second TF offshore with the engineers and base units .. and more supply.

also just have some ships in the invasion group with only supply onboard as the troops will unload first and unless you drop off supply at the same time , invading atolls will be horrible. (shock attack rules) .. create 2 transport groups . one with troops , one with supply , then merge them both .. then all escorts .. can be fiddly but worth it .

Kained (caned) is slang for 'beaten' or 'drunk' or 'out of it' in english , however i fail to see the connection with china ??

anyway .. as ever good luck ..

June 1943 begins... Japanese waiting for oncoming allied assaults...

Post by aztez »

JuSorry to hear that your PBEM game got "cancelled" Rob... anyway you were doing fine so I guess your opponent just got enough beating and could not take it anymore! [:)]

I have been busy lately (again [:(]) and not been able to update this AAR as often as I would like but here we go again...

Game date is 5th of June 1943

China

No ground combat to report... It has been quite peaceful actually.

Japanese are still bombing Yunan and Kumming but that pretty much is it. I have started a bombing campaign of my own (ordere by B25J's to ground assault againts Japanese infantry between Chungking and Chengtu)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 22nd Division, at 42,31

Allied aircraft
Hurricane II x 2
Spitfire Vb x 7
P-40N Warhawk x 2
B-25J Mitchell x 30

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
26 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 15th Division, at 42,31

Allied aircraft
B-25J Mitchell x 31

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
47 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

I did actually launch a few bombing runs againts Sian and Lanchow but those operations became too costly to continue due to lack of fighter escort available at the moment.

India & Burma

I did try to close down the airfield at Mandalay but I got way too many casualties... the problem is that he has quite a lot of fighters stationed there and I can't escort my bombers properly in order to inflict maxium damage. This means that I propably need to capture Akyab soon enough... this operation would bring my Spitfires in range of Mandalay.

I have also bombed Lashio few turns now but this operation will too be put on hold since he has brought in LCAP.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Imperial Guards Division, at 35,30

Allied aircraft
Liberator VI x 12
Beaufighter Mk 21 x 2
B-17E Fortress x 6
B-24D Liberator x 11

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
24 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

He seems to have around 80 000 troops in Mandalay and another 40 000 garrisoning Lashio.

Central & North Pacific

The buildup continues... Operation Delfine has become too costly to continue! I have withdrawn my submarines towards deeper waters. Nomore at the periscope depth watching Tokyo's nightlife!

I'am still waiting for my Hellcats... before that my US CV's will not engage the enemy at their own will. I'am not sure actually when I will receive first of my Hellcats squadrons/upgrades but hopefully this will happen sooner than later.

Otherwise just bringing in fresh troops and maintaining my battle readiness.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

Canton Island has been build up nicely... Daily bombing runs againts Baker Islands are happening and thus this will mean that he cannot have operational airfield there at the moment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Baker Island , at 94,92

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 5
B-25J Mitchell x 63
PB4Y Liberator x 13
B-24D Liberator x 30

No Allied losses

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 63

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Baker Island , at 94,92

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 9
B-25J Mitchell x 102
PB4Y Liberator x 19
B-24D Liberator x 56

Allied aircraft losses
B-25J Mitchell: 1 damaged
PB4Y Liberator: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
38 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 75

Also thanks to Sardaukar's advice this time around my Bombardment TF escorts did not bombard and the results were much better...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval bombardment of Baker Island, at 94,92 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

Allied Ships
CL Birmingham
CL Denver
CL Montpelier
CLAA San Juan
BB California
BB Maryland

Japanese ground losses:
383 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 26
Port hits 5
Port supply hits 23

He also seems to have AG's sailing in and out TImor... last turn those ships were intercepted by my B17 bomber squadron...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Dili at 31,77

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 24

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AG AG-2095
AG AG-2090, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AG AG-2088, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
AG AG-2093, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AG AG-2091

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Dili at 31,77

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 31

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
AG AG-2098
AG AG-2095, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
AG AG-2090, Shell hits 4, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
AG AG-2097, Bomb hits 6, on fire, heavy damage
AG AG-2099, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AG AG-2087, Shell hits 4, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

..other allied bombers have hit ground troops at Timor daily as usual.

Also my British Navy have recieved upgrades (BC Repulse among others) .

This pretty much is how things stand at the moment.

Japanese ambassador states that "the end is near"...

Post by aztez »

Well... my opponent stated "...that the End is near..." ...erhm... if he thinks he can just walk allover allies he is dead wrong. I think he is just trying to get me anxious and that propably would lead to mistakes! That wohn't happen and if he wants to commit his troops for an offensive he is more than welcomed!

It is still taking sometime before I'am ready for my massive offensives... (propably around 2 months or so....)

Game date is 9th of June 1943

China

Quiet.... no air to air duels has been fought. He has kept bombing Yunan and Kumming...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Yunan , at 38,32

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 27
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 19
Ki-21 Sally x 54
Ki-48 Lily x 125

Ki-21 Sally: 2 damaged
Ki-48 Lily: 1 destroyed, 5 damaged

Allied ground losses:
10 casualties reported

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 22nd Division, at 42,31

Allied aircraft

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 15th Division, at 42,31

Allied aircraft
B-25J Mitchell x 31

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
37 casualties reported

...nothing else major to report. It is intresting to see whether he still tries something here... basically he needs to if he wants the autovictory.

India & Burma

zzZzzzZzz... just some submarines are now stationed between Singapore and Rangoon.

Also the bombing runs againts Akyab has started... the idea is to keep this airfield suppressed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Akyab , at 30,29

Allied aircraft
Brewster 339D x 2
Liberator VI x 31
Beaufighter VIC x 6
Beaufighter Mk 21 x 9
B-17E Fortress x 15
B-24D Liberator x 31

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
25 casualties reported

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 23

Central & North Pacific

Troop deployments are ongoing... nothing else.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

Troops are arriving daily in Canton Island... this is becoming strong staging point.

As stated earlier however it will still weeks before I'am able launch any kind of major offensives down here in the South.

Baker Island recieved it's daily pounding... I doubt that those IJN troops feel too lucky at the moment...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Baker Island , at 94,92

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 7
P-38G Lightning x 21
B-25J Mitchell x 136
PB4Y Liberator x 22
B-24D Liberator x 61

Allied aircraft losses
PBY Catalina: 1 damaged
PB4Y Liberator: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
32 casualties reported

Airbase hits 6
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 143

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Baker Island , at 94,92

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 9
P-38G Lightning x 23
B-25J Mitchell x 128
PB4Y Liberator x 19
B-24D Liberator x 69

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
45 casualties reported

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 13
Runway hits 142

No sign of Japanese navy at the moment... so that is quite intresting. What this means that we can expect quite huge naval battles to be fought in months ahead.

IJN airforce are bombing Woodlark and Kai Island daily... these are free practise targets for rookie pilots.

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
29 casualties reported

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 54

Otherwise just a couple of minor air to air battles happened.

I have now changed North Pacific HQ to serve as South East Asia command unit. This will bring in more troops to India and such... this will give me more operational freedom in the future.

China

Japanese still have 180 000 troops in Kweiyang... I'am considering of launching an assault here but I not too sure that my infantry can be victorious???. I have 250 000 men in Kweiyang at the moment and I have 20 000 supplies stockpiled there. So I guess I better wait at least for now.

Again no ground combat to report... he hasn't attacked any of my airfields either... just the daily bombings of Yunan and Kumming.

Also my Chinese B25J bombers have continued with their ground assault campaign...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have also launched my next invasion... the target is Funafuti Island. This operation is already on it's way. Hopefully this will go without too many casualties.

aztez,

You have been setting up an attack on Baker Is for a long time now, are you advancing into a trap??

I'd have KB sitting South of Kwalejien by now waiting for your move. Plus as many Betties as I could find.

(Unaware of the whole situation) have you got any alternatives to attack from the same basing area??

Even your CV's with Wildcats can be used, carefully. You can be gaining experience points while waiting for the Hellcats.

Dont forget some feints when you do move, they may draw off forces or even a few air attacks which might jave struck your Invasion Forces.

A feint I have used in the DEI is Merauke & other points along the South of Irian Jaya

Thanks for the feedback JeffK.

You are absolutely right... It has taken quite a while setting up the assault at Baker Island. This is due to the fact that it will take long to deploy the necessary troops.

Your estimate that he is propably setting a trap could be true!!!

There are several factors indicating this....

1) There is absolutely no sign of his navy! Some CL and DD's have been spotted near Burma but the rest of his naval assets are no where to be seen! I have a feeling that he has his navy near Truk!!! (there is no intel reports to back this up but....)

2) He knows that I'am planning assaults in the South Pacific and he know that Baker Island is the target!!!

3) He has still operational airfields in Tarawa and surrounding islands!!! As you said he can place quite a few Betty's there and that is not good at all!

The question is what to do considering these "facts"...!!! I really need to move ahead with this operation so I can't cancel these operational plans.

Few things that I have been thinking....

1) I need to move all of my CV assets (RN & US) and my major surface combat ships there (RN & US)... they will not interfere with the landings unless Japanese navy shows up! This will take time to deploy... CV Formidable still has system damage of 12 and I want this ship also to be involved!

2) I have now 180 fighters in Canton Island... (P38's and Thunderbolts).... these AC's can provide LRCAP! I don't know how effective this will actually be!

3) I need take Funafuti and the surrounding islands before this operation is to go ahead. This would give me more airfields on which to support these landings and opportunity to supress Japanese airfields at Tarawa and surrounding islands.

..this is what I have been thinking!

HI there aztez, your game continues well, had a massive hard drive failure recently and was offline for a week ..eek.[:@][:@]

Quick question though ? you had NorPac HQ at San Fran and change hq to SEAC ? when it arrives in karachi will all Norpac troops arrive here also ? seems too good to be true if your facing an india invasion in 42. wow ..

and Baker is. well trap or not you have to do something i think, time is marching on.Is there any isolated jap base you can use to train up your CV fighter pilots ? ground attack for a turn or 2 then run away .. may distract KB into showing itself which would be very very useful.

im sort of suprised TBolts have the range to LR cap Baker from Canton as well .. only use normal not extended range for LR cap .. i havnt got P47's yet so not too sure off hand.

As a sneaky thought. has he got any subs operating east of the aussie coast ? if so leave them alone and create a big empty and slow TF from Brisbane/Sydney yo PM or gili .. also have a seperate CVE TF to act as dummy cv's .. launch 1-2 turns ahead of any move on Baker, jap sigint is so bad its very likely he hasn't spotted planning for baker at all imho. and at this stage you have enough transports for 2 big landings at once. again this might draw out KB and at least have him worried and unable to move LBA out of New Guinea and rabaul 'just in case'

anyway .. good luck with what ever u decide. [:D]

Yes... it seems that changing NorthPac HQ to SEAC results that NorPac troops will arrive in Karachi... too bad I did not do this earlier since there aren't that many NorPac troops arriving this late at the war.

Actually there are no isolated IJN bases left... so I have to with my CV Fighter pilots.

I actually think that I know where KB (or big part of it is..) since D3Val's attacked my 1 of my Subs near Rabaul.. so as I did suspect he is waiting down in the South.

I'am actually short of AK's and AP's.. So many troops to move and so few ships.

Baker Island will be one of the decieding battles of this War that will be so...

Game date is 25th of June 1943

India & Burma

Central & North Pacific

Nothing major to report... Operation Delfine is becoming too costly so I guess It is time to abandon this operation.

I will move most of my submarines deeper into South Pacific.

Otherwise nothing major to report.

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

I will receive my Hellcats sometimes in July so this means that anykind of major CV mission will delayed until my ac's can upgrade.

I know that Baker Island will be a trap but what he doesn't know that I will be there in force also... combined US & Royal Navy will go head to head Japanese Battleships and CV's. I guess this will be one of those decieding battles of this WW2.

I have kept bombarding Baker Island with my navy....

Allied troops heading towards Funafuti are almost on their way. I estimate these landings to start within 1-2 weeks.

I would also estimate that the major allied push towards Baker Island will begin within 1 month or so (depending when I do recieve my Hellcats upgrades). It is intresting to see how massive navy vs navy duel this will be.

I'd counter attck that defeated jap force in china before it can reorganise if i were you :) .. his disruption must be terrible imo.

Keep flattening baker too. when you stop ketting kills you can tell the base forces and probably the CD troops are blown to bits.
may be worth alternating a/f and port attacks to maximise supply hits and has the bonus of hitting CD units too.

I think your guess of KB at rabaul may well be correct. however he does have some land based vals so be careful. seen any planes round kwajelien ( a popular port with the japs apparently ) ?

as ever good luck !

I know his distruption must be high but I opted not assault this turn since those Chinese troops had fatigue levels around 40's... and it seems he has now +30 000 troops that have crossed the river. I need valuate this situation again when I get the next turn back.

Yes, I will keep flattening Baker Island daily... the airfield will remain shutdown. I know I need to Port attack too before the landings will take place. I will propably flatten the ports using navy bombardments.

Hmm... Good point... Those Val's might be land based aircrafts. But I would think so that he has his navy somewhere in the South Pacific unless he is thinking about the assaulting India or raiding West Coast/Pearl Harbour.

Here are the objectives theatre by theatre as far as allied are concerned:

Australia, NZ & South Pacific

1) Capture Funafuti and surrounding bases ---> This will give me an operational airfields near Tarawa.

2) Invade Baker Island... This operation will include the bulk of both US & Royal Navy.
(I think this propably will result to huge battles againts allied and Japanese Navy)

3) After these stages are completed assault Tarawa and surrounding islands with force! Assuming I still have have something to assault with [&:]

3b) Also maybe an simultaneous assault againts Guadacanal could be in order. This is an option if I'am able to inflict major damage to Japanese navy.

4) After these turn my attention towards Marshalls Island. (Kwalein and the surrounding islands... this propably would sometimes around mid 1944... maybe even earlier depending on outcomes of previous operations)

Burma

Invade Akyab sometimes late 1943... than start preparing for Mandalay assault. I wohn't commit my forces until I'am sure he has no intention about India.

After conquering Burma than drive towards Malaya peninsula.

North Pacific

No operations planned.

Central Pacific

No planned operations in 1943... Earliest offensive timetable would be propably around summer 1944.

If I had not plundered the Wake Invasion earlier I could move ahead earlier. The first obvious targets are still Wake Island and Marcus Islands.

DEI

At the moment I'am unable to launch any major landings here. There just aren't enough troops in my disposal. I would estimate that the earliest possible offensive could be sometimes at the end of 1944.

China

1) First try to soften up Japanese bases by LBA assaults. (I need to somehow shutdown the enemy airfield at Hanoi and this wohn't be easy)

2) The first offensive propably would be launched at the Southern China. I have quite a few troops at Kweiyang. At the moment he has 180 000 in Kweiyang and I have around 250 000 troops there. I'am hesitating whether to try an delibarate assault here soon. What do you all think?

3) Depending on the outcome down in the South China.. I could launch simultaneous assault in Central China too... this is dangerous since I do not want him to be able to capture Chungking.

These are just raw sketches in future plans... comments are appreciated!

Looks good to me. I hope that next major carrier battle goes to your way. But then you get all those neat Essex Cvs in 1944. [8D]

Yes, that CV vs CV battle can decide the outcome of the war... (assuming he will commit his forces when I go for the assault againts Baker Island which I think he will do).

Couple of thoughts about this forthcoming duel...

1) I think I will group 3 CV's. 1 CVL and 1-2 CVE's in TF. (I do not whether this is correct composition of this kind of a TF) ...2-3 CA's... 1-3 CL's and rest will be DD's. In total around 15 ships. Should I include any BB's in aircombat TF???

2) I will set TF's reaction level to 4.

3) I will put my fighter 50-60% Escort levels. ( I do not whether this is best way)

To be honest I do not know if I should change alltitudes of airplanes or just leave them at default setting.

Also I propably will make 4 Surface combat TF's too... These will intercept any Japanese Surface TF that will come to play.

The composition should be 2-3 BB's... 1-3 CA's.... 1-3 CL's.... and rest are DD's. Again around 15 ships in total.

Any thoughts and comments guys?

You can safely have bigger Tfs than 15 ships. Flak won't degrade, even tho 15+ sjhips won't commit all their assets. And I'd keep CVEs out of main Air Combat TF and have their own TF. They are slow and have few air mission point available. If in different TF they can even soak opponents attack if lucky.
