RE: New Plan
Kuching will be under attack soon if I want to reinforce Singers I will have to keep it closed.
My 2 B17 Gps have arrived in the area and are recovering fatigue (and allowing stragglers to arrive) I cannot base them at Singers due to a lack of Aviation Support
Force Z is moving closer and I am going to try and hit him at Kuching with LBA. (minus 3 CL's and 4 DD's left to cover Kendari/ Amboina)
Also bombers have been ordered to hit khota to try and delay the bases falling I may not work we shall see.
I am not sure whats going on in China I am watching the space closely.

Defence
OK Guys in my free moments at work I am turning my thoughts around the defence phase after the fall of the DEI.
In past games I have faced invasions of India, Invasions of Northern Australia and multiple Invasions of New Cal/ Fiji.
No one has as yet tried an invasion of NZ but it is always a possibility.
In this post I will cover my intentions re the defence of India. My principal area of concern in India is Madras. If the enemy get ashore at Madras then I have little chance to stop them in Mid India it is the weakpoint as there are just to many avenues of advance from that city.
If Madras falls the whole of India below Ahmabad - Delhi line is undefendable
Now I am confident that I can stop an invasion of India if I prepare my defences (Build Forts !!!), dont overcommitt to Burma and retain my skilled RAF pilots. I am preparing forts at all coastal cities and have my main fighting reserves back form the beaches as they arrive.
3 Corps concentrating at Bangalore (eventually 2nd UK, 5th Indian, 254th Ard and 3 Art Regts plus base forces all prepped for Madras) this force will recieve priority for additional forces as they arrive.
Burma Corps concentrating at Dacca (18th UK, 17th Indian plus 2 attached Bdes), 255th Ard, 3 Art regts plus base forces.
NWFrontier Force concentrating at Ahmabad (23rd Indian Div plus 1 attached Bde, 7th Armoured Bde and base forces)
All other units will garrison coastal bases allowing these reaction forces the freedom to react. As units arrive they will be used to either strengthen the reaction forces or the coastal garrisons.
Rear area bases will be garrisoned by any remnant units retrieved from DEI or Singapore.
Overall I am comfortable that given a couple of months to prepare India can hold !!!
I will explain my intentions for Australia and SOPAC later (after I have worked out what I am going to do !!!

RE: Defence
OK now for the defence of Australia.
Australia has plentifull good land units but a lot of geography to cover.
The five main regions requiring defending are
1. Port Moresby
2. Sydney and South coast
3. Brisbane and East coast
4. Perth
5. Darwin and the north
1. Port Moresby I am NOT intending on committing forces to the defence of PM it is just to exposed and KB to strong. If the Pauk wants it he can take it no matter what I do.
Therefore I will only send units that I am willing to lose in order to keep him honest.
Forts are being built and the port mined but no more than 1 Bde will be sent until I can reinforce to at least 3 x divisional strength anything else is just a waste.
2. Sydney and south coast
6th Aus Div and 7th Aus Div will be held to cover Sydney supported by at least 1 AT Bn and a base force. Sydney is one of the two must hold location's in Australia.
3. Brisbane and East coast
Brisbane and Charter Towers will each recieve at least one Division and Townsville and Rockhampton will get enough engineers to build forts and airfields. Brisbane is important but can be easily reinforced from north or south so the garrison while important will be restricted to one division.
Charter Towers in addition to it garrison will be the concentration point for 1st Aus Corps and later 1st Australian Army which will consist of 2 - 3 Armoured regts and 2 US / Aus Divs.
This will be the rapid reaction force for north coast or south
4. Perth
OK Perth is the strategic conundrum. I am a great advocate of raiding it as the Japanese and it is a vital city to hold as the only organic oil supply in Australia. But I dont really expect an assault.
I often use it as a rebuilding site for remnants from Java initially 6th Aus Cav Bde is being sent to reinforce the garrison that gives me broadly 1 normal Bde plus 1 understrength Bde. I will wait and see what develops before reinforcing further I would probably like an Armoured regt as well but I will need those in the north.
5. Darwin and the north
OK this is the main area where the IJN could be expected to strike.
Darwin and derby need to be fortified to withstand a 4 - 6 divisional assault. This is tricky to do. Each will recieve an Aus Inf Div and Ard Regt and a Cav Div.
Now thats not enough but Derby is the only realistic reinforcement site for Perth so I need to cover it equally Darwin is vital to a future attack on Timor so it needs to be garrisoned.
I am leaving myself open to defeat in detail by splitting my forces but its a chance I need to take. (the alternative is to concentrate whole force at Wyndham)
I am not sure what to do in this theatre at moment and will need to think it through a little more.
Anyway Australia with its surplus of good Inf Units is not really where I expect the attack (beyond PM) but I will prepare just in case.

RE: Defence
SOPAC last in the areas to be defended category and the one most likely to be attacked.
1. Rabaul and New Britain
2. Solomons
3. New Caledonia
4. Fiji
5. New Zealand
1. Rabaul and New Britain
This is undefendable and no troops will be sent in fact if I can spare the points I will evac everything (although this is unlikely)
2. Solomons
This is a tough one I dont have any surface TF's as I have diverted everything to DEI I would like to garrison Lunga if only to make him take it off of me.
I might scrape up an infantry Bn from somewhere just to make him take it off me.
3. New Caledonia
OK I have diverted 1 company from the Art Bn approaching Suva to reinforce the base unit. Until I know I can hold it which means a decent surface TF and enough fighters to protect it as well as 2 or 3 Divs I will not reinforce the base. String (and others) have proven to me that it is just to exposed as a base.
4. Fiji
This is going to be my main hub in the SOPAC all available reinforcements will be sent land sea and air. Enterprise and Lexington are based there and Sara will be sent to reinforce (loaded with additional fighters and dive bombers).
I have sent 3 AA regts on the ways as well as numerous Aircraft Sqns from the West Coast. This is a max speed surge effort to reinforce Fiji and make it impregnible.
5. New Zealand
NZ is the weird one. I am shipping supplies in and consolidating land units on north island when I have the PP's available but apart from that and fort buiding I am doing nothing.
NZ scares me as there are no inland bases so its very easy to close down from the sea. (I think this is wrong as a country the size of NZ would have at least one air base safe from naval bombardment)
I will consolidate all airpower at Aukland (the RNZAF Kittyhawks are worth there weight in gold as they upgrade to Corsairs) but will protect the NZ Fighter Sqns as if they can get to high XP they are deadly in 43.
Overall this is the theatre where I am short of sufficient strength to guarantee the security of a single base.

RE: Defence
It is but given the choice between New Cal or Fiji I prefer Fiji as it is closer to Canton/ Palmyra and other islands and can be reinforced.
The issue with New Cal is that after Espito goes its very difficult to re supply

The fall of Khota is a real pain as it will neccesitate heavy suppression not to mention the units involved will be heavily weakened.
This is annoying especially as my LBA didnt launch at all
Andy
RE: Defence
Naga holds thanks to the timely arrival of an Armoured Bn.
I would like to hold for 9 more days which will be tough to allow the 2 PI Divs that arrive at Bataan to make there way to Manila where I plan to stand with the rules of movement I need to keep enemy units out of the Manila hex if I am to consolidate my forces there for the street to street fighting.
Manila and Clark airfileds are both hit hard. And my Destroyer TF (4) got hit hard by enemy bombers and did not engage the enemy carriers.
Kuching falls I will try to put it out of action tomorrow I cannot afford to have that airfield operational on my LOC into Singapore.
So far nothing to bad has happened it is more or less as expected
Irritated that my force heading for Menado didnt engage

New Plan
One of my huge flaws is my impatience I always want to hit back...
This has caused me major problems in games because I often go off half cocked. As a result I often lose all my US Carriers early. I dont think I have a single game where I have more than 3 prewar CV's by December and in most I am down four or five.
My plan in this game is to use my Carriers as aircraft transports. As a result Lexington will move to Australia and offload her full strike group that I will then move toward Singapore/ Java these aircraft are the only types that I have plentifull replacements for.(Wildcats/ Dauntless) In fact 1 squadron of Dauntless's based at Amboina/ Kendari could cause real problems for the IJN.
I will probably leave her with the devastatror group as it is of limited use.
Lady Lex will then become a high speed aircraft transport moving between West Coast and SOPAC.
Enterprise and Saratoga based from Fiji will cover SOPAC but will stay rooted there unless I know where KB is.

RE: New Plan
OK Im goign for Kuching this turn throwing everything at it to try and close the field lets see what happens.
I have about 60 B17's if they all fly that is hopefully enough to close it at this stage when massive engineers are not present.
If Pauk gets that AF open I am not going to be able to get supplies into Singapore

RE: New Plan
A few days since I've been able to read. First you state that Perth has the only Oil internal to Oz - doesn't Brisbane have some?
2nd - where did you get the 50 B-17Es? Did they travel all the way across the Pacific already?

RE: New Plan
Excellent I didnt know that I had oil in Brisbane.
I have not really spent much time thinking about Aus Defence yet I am still in reaction mode. (except when I am at work without a map to check these things on !!!!!)
B17's started on day 1 (we didnt have a house rule re aircraft but I chose to leave PH/ Manila and Singapore alone it didnt stop me moving my West Coast 17's starting accross the Pacific)
I have 3 Groups available 2 from West Coast 1 from Pearl although I only think 2 or 3 sqns have actually arrived (I think I made a mistake I think you get more damaged by splitting them into sqns on transfer). (a lot are hung up in Timor and Java)
I am acually hoping to get enough B25C's soon to downgrade some of the fort sqns as I think from Singapore B25C's (which I will have lots of are better than limited 17's also the 17's in the pool would allow me to transfer some Bolo Sqns to Australia)
I may be overstating when i say 50 [:D][:D] I think that includes the 17D's of 19th BG
I have about 50+ damaged 17E's scattered halfway accross the Pacific and the ones that are at Singapore are all 50 ish fatigue or higher (an early strike by the IJN at Lunga/ Canton or New Cal is going to catch a LOT of damaged 17E's on the ground.) also 5th BG has only got 11 Forts as it stayed at PH for the day 1 strike.

RE: Defence
p.s. and this is slightly gamey so Im looking for views when I downgrade it sucks all those exposed damaged forts into the pool out of harms way so I would probably like to consolidate all the fragments into 1 sqn that I will then downgrade which will boost my Fort pool......
Too gamey ?
Too gamey ?
RE: Defence
<sighs> If im even asking the question it means I already know the answer.....
But it was such a good wheeze to remove all the damaged forts from bases with no aircraft support points....
I guess I will need to think again

RE: Defence
OK a few missed turns on my part Im going for Pauk all out now Kuching must be closed I am sending in the AVG (1sqn) on sweep and every bomber I can muster are going in at 6,000 feet.
He has fighters there but they must be fatigued.
This is a risk my bombers are very tired win lose or draw they need to rest after this turn.

Disaster at Kuching
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/17/41
Not really a disaster but im trying psy ops against PAUK
It did hurt AVG lost 20 planes although only 14 pilots
My heavies suffered badly. I have send about 5 sqns to India if they have 3 planes or less.
All fighters set to 90% CAP all remaing bombers resting. I am expecting a heavy raid on Singers (its what I would do) I lost about 60 aircraft all told
