First impulse, too, was 'Betio, Tarawa', but on second glimpse I wasn't so sure - IMO pocket and airfield don't look right compared to pic and map here.

What's farther west - Ocean Is. and Nauru are next but look completely different, and then we are in Solomons-Bismarck archipel-PNG area, and there were dozens of airbases... I take a wild guess and say 'Green Is.' and hope for new directions or hints from Knavey.

Hint:

Truk, Biak, Palau and Yap were all targets from this airfield when the US began using it for bombing missions.

Not Ulitihi. Think closer to Truk, Rabaul and PM area.

It starts the game as a 0(3) airfield and in both of my PBEM games it is still a 0(3) airfield held by the Japanese in May '42.

You're right, it's probably Negros. I was thinking Biak until he dropped the clue.
Sing to the tune of "Man on the Flying Trapeze"
..Oh! We fly o'er the treetops with inches to spare,
There's smoke in the cockpit and gray in my hair.
The tracers look fine as a strafin' we go.
But, brother, we're TOO God damn low...
