RE: Allies LBA's continue their work... Where is the Japanese navy???

Post by Rob Brennan UK »

Adding a BB to an air combat TF is a must imo. can attract bombers as much as CV's also provide a LOT of AA. Having a 25 ship TF will not hurt you at all imo.

one issue might be the max a/c coordination, i think its 200 right now. also i would have 2 CV groups and have them on follow orders and 0 reaction so they dont get split up. also do not enter the island hex or your cap will suffer horribly. also i would have cap at 60-70 % .. you can replace any bombers losses rapidly but cant afford to lose and more CV's.
Combat load the troops and merge in supply AK's along with some CA's and CL's to hit the CD guns.

Sadukar is right about the CVE's , keep them well away from the Cv's .. well in a seperate tf at least. maybe 'follow' the CVE group so you dont get split up.

Lanchow bombed... Funafuti island falls to allies...

Post by aztez »

Ok... Intresting and good points taken.

I will make separate TF CVE's... It is propably wise to set my main CV fleet in follow order behind them.

Couple of questions though... Sardaukar did you mean I should put all my US CV's in one single TF or....???

What about CVL's ... do you count them as CVE's or use them with main CV fleet?

You are propably 100% right Rob... I need at least 1 or 2 BB's in the main CV Fleet to serve as torpedo/bomb magnets! One question though... you say I should use 60-70% CAP (Sounds reasonable) by that do you mean that I should have my fighters at 30-40% on Escort mission???

I wohn't blunder myself to coastal hex that's for sure [:D] .... Anyway last turn was good for the allies... more about it next...

You should not exceed the control penalty number..which I think is 150+rnd(150) in 1943. So you can prolly have 2 CVs and CVL in one TF and mostly get away with it. 2 CVs per TF is quite safe option, tho. You can have CVLs either with CVs or with CVE TF to beef them up. And fast BBs are good for flak and as bomb magnets. With CVEs you can also use slow 20 knot BBs. If you have 3 CVs and 1 CVL, you can have 2 CV TF and have it followed by CV+CVL TF. CVEs should be in different TF...maybe following slow Surface Combat TF.

I use 60 % Escort for fighters in my games, seems to work well.

Im sure you probably know this

set fighters as escort, then set the combat air patrol at 70% for 70% cap and 30% escort or whatever number you choose.

I usually stagger the fighter altutudes from 2k above bombers to 10k above.. usually 11k -21k . no idea if it makes any differance. but should the japs have veried ltitude too. i.e torps flying low and DB coming in from 20k feet. might reduce the amount that can slip through. [&:][&:][&:]

Thanks again... btw are you setting up a new PBEM Rob? [:)]

...and I will set my fighters to escort missions and put the CAP number at 30-40% so that means 30% of my fighters will escort missions and 70% will remain as defensive force.

...another good turn for the allies...

Uh..if you put CAP to 30 % then 70 % of your fighters will escort strikes... I think it'd be wise to put them 70 % CAP [:)]. CAP % is the persentage of fighters assigned to defensive duties.

BTW, only "Engineer Squads" have assault value and can reduce forts. "Engineers" don't, they are construction only. So if those SeaBees don't have "Engineer Squads", they should not be placed in combat, they are second line troops and not combat effective.

I will bomb Lunga again in forthcoming turn... I have moved even more Allied bombers to Luganville and they will assault the place next turn!!! The Lunga airfield remains operational but it's intresting to see what kind of damage I can cause [:)] ... I would bet that he has moved more fighters there in order to provide CAP but there will be again +200 allied LBA's hitting the place! [:)]

Also it seems that he has now 90 000 troops stationed there... so he is propably expecting an allied offensive soon enough... (which he will propably get once I'am satisfied with the destruction).

There are also allied units moving to Cooktown.... this will serve as an operational airfield againts Gili Gili and Port Moresby.... These place will also be bombed hard! [:)] Cairns has also now level 8 airfield fully operational!

3 US Navy surface TF are now stationed in Canton Island... these will be a nasty suprise welcoming committee if he tries anything againts the island in question.

Great attack on luganville ! .. how about using the RN heavies for a few bombardment runs ( turn off escorts though) maybe send in a few minesweepers to see if he's heavily mined the place. You may well (weather permitting ) be able to keep luganville closed for good.

And he's using AP's on supply runs ?? what a daft choice. you sure hes not dropping more troops off ?

As far as baker is concerned . he's probably written the place off.

China is going very well , have you been able to stop jap training in china? if so he'll have a really bad airforce in a short time .. [:D][:D]

Keep up the good work ! .. the tides really turning now imo

Wake ! sigh .. let them rot , the place isnt worth the effort. go through the marshalls and gilberts and wake is effectively a large POW camp.
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Japanese airforce takes heavy casualties in Lunga...

Post by aztez »

You are absolutely right Sardaukar! [:D]

Oh Rob, the target was not Luganville (I have captured that place ages ago) but instead it is Lunga [;)] ...Luganville is serving as home base for my LBA's.

I doubt that I will sent MSW and surface TF's to sweep Lunga... he still has too many operational airfields in nearby bases.

I don't know what he doing with those AP's but if he dropping more troops off than that is good news for me!

Actually there are good news for the Japanese training program...more about later [:)]

100+ runway hits !! Good news, that eats *lot* of supply from Japanese to repair. And islands are hard to supply...so you seem to be doing well. [:)]

I would agree that over 100 damage is more than Ok [:)]

I'am at work at the moment so I don't have the latest combat report with me but it was good turn again.

There was not that significant damage done to Lunga which was kind of a disappointment... I propably need to rest my LBA's for turn or two soon.

The good news was from China... Those Spitfires really caused problems to Japanese Airforce at Yunan!!! The score indicated that 120 Japanese aircraft was lost in air to air combat!!! [:D][:D][:D]

I will post in more detail soon when I get off from work.

Lunga / Luganville .. whoops ! .. not to self .. read properly before replying [;)]

Wow ,, you really are hurting the jap a/f ! congrats. Yes btw lunga isnt a good choice for a BB run .. maybe with Ca's ?? over 30 knots anyway. might be worth a trial run with a spare CL.

I am looking forward to the china reports ..if you can hurt/stop the free china training he will rue the day he didnt leave one PI hex in enemy control.

As Sadukar said .. you really are turning this around ! congratulations .. and to think you almost quit after Wake .. very pleased you decided to stick at it .. revenge is all the sweeter after a few disasters [&o][&o][&o]

I agree !! With Allies, the problem is possible auto-victory loss in start of 1943. After that Allies get so strong that Japan is hard-pressed to hope for draw even. Of course I think that Draw result is actually a victory for Japan.

Suprise party at Yunan... Allied commanders confident...

Post by aztez »

Hmpf... I think it would be too risky raid againts Lunga even with only CA's involved... He still has too Betty's stationed in Rabaul, etc and he has his navy somewhere close by.

As I said it was a good turn again... especially in China.... but it is too early to say that I will win this game since he has his whole navy intact!... andd that can cause some serious problems in forthcoming months!

Game date is 23rd of July 1943

Burma & India

I have now moved some fresh Spitfires to Myithkina and Ledo. These squadrons will serve as an reserve for Chinese front... and these pilots will be used if necessary.

... I don't whether these Zero's are stationed in Baker Island or does he have the KB lurking nearby providing this CAP!!! Anyway, I have ordedered some 50 B17's to join in with these assaults... and there will be more P38's escorting next time around.

I'am also confident that he has major navy vessels nearby Baker Island... BB Hiei among others are definately there.

Lunga was bombed but now my pilots needs rest and engineers time to repair those damaged bombers...

... this operation will continue as soon as I get those planes repaired and pilots rested... You can expect around + 300 bombers in action once this operation will continue.
