Japanese radar equiped DD's

Post by Tophat »

I'm starting to actually get afew of these ships and i'm wondering how effective they have been for people. No smart use the search-engine comments,I already tried.
Do they give better service as CV escorts or SF escorts?

I think all the IJN radars are surface-search. At least that's the way I've been using them - but decent TF commanders still seem to be more important than ship sensors. I think they help when avoiding suprise in naval engagements, and I haven't had the IJN suprised in quite a while. The Allies, on the other hand, need all the help they can get - so I think the radar upgrades are a bigger plus to them than the Japanese.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that you can put a CL or a DD with radar into a CVTF and have it somehow make a difference in air combat. It doesn't help. IJ radar is for SCTFs, period.

Word is that Jap air search radar is broken. These DDs might help in surface battles though.

Type 5 is supposed to be air search, but in stock game it is surface. CHS fixed it though.

Yep, db for scenario 15 has them as surface search, which is really kinda bad because one description for the radar said something like "it is an air search radar, also gave useful information in surface combat". If they are going to be one or the other, they need to be air search, not surface.

Fixed in CHS. And they are trying to fix other radars too. Lot of stuff is lacking in original game tha probably should have been there.

I thik it is pretty sad that they have not fixed this in Scenario 15. As pathetic as they are, sound detectors are superior to the radars that replace them because the radar has no effect. The problem is, you can't accept replacements on base forces after the radar becomes available. If you do, your horrible sound detectors become even worse surface search radars.

I am also amazed this keeps getting overlooked. I think it is worthy of a data base patch that works on save games like the AA patch they did in 1.5.
