Manila supply watch:
Feb 26: 3415
Feb 27: 3404
Feb: 28: forgot to check
March 1: 3380
March 2: 3688 A 4500 AK is unloading, but Mogami spotted it and 2 float planes attacked already. Unless I have some really good luck with thunderstorms it will be bombed to peices on the 3rd. No more attempts will be made to get ships into Manilia but subs are bringing in small amounts of supplies.
The low supply consumption is bad, it means the units are starting to eat thier organic supply. Mogami sent this email a couple of days ago:
Hi, Well the next week (First week of march)Is going to be interesting.
Japan is going to throw everything on the ranch at Manila I'll send you the
data the turn I order the assault (waiting for 1 more engineer to get there)
I was surprised this turn by recon report of 30k+ Allied troops at Noumea.
Almost forces me to try for it. (but the troops required are all sitting in
Manila) But I guess that will be the next major location. (I was wavering
between the Central and South Pacific)
Hope you are having fun with this game.
Hope you don't think I always play like this. I normally use many rules I
only impose on myself. This game is an experiment to me and so I don't have
any ego attached to the outcome. (I'm more interested in finding an answer
to a question then I am in the score)
This concerns me a bit, because if he is not trying to win then he has no chance. I am not certain I can beat him, but I am certain I can beat him if he is not trying to win. More recently he sent me Japanese production and resource statistics, but I don't want them, or any other information that will help me win the game.
In China the I decided to pull out of Nanking and Peking at the same time that Mogami decided to pull out of Peking. So we have these strange one unit on one unit bombarment battles going on there. I am guessing that the Peking troops are heading for Russia. The Chinese retreated to Kaigan and are now advancing again hoping to take the city.
Near Changsha a Japanese headquarters unit surrendered, causing a loss of 3,000 men and boosting the Japanese infantry point loss from 462 to 494. The usual daily combats have pushed it up to 500 since then.
With a large Japanese force in Nanking or moving North from the city the Chinese army at Changsha has the opportunity to hit Wuhan, now covered by 16 Japanese units. I doubt the place will fall, and I may not launch anything more than a bombardment attack but it will still reduce Japanese supply and increase Chinese experience so 4,000+ APs are on their way.
Burma is a pure air war at the moment. On February 28 Mogami decided to see what was flying CAP over Mandalay:
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 43
Allied aircraft
Hawk 75A x 3
Hurricane II x 33
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 6 destroyed
Allied aircraft losses
Hawk 75A: 1 destroyed
Hurricane II: 16 destroyed, 1 damaged
I was hoping to have 60 Hurricanes up but many did not fly. In spite of inflicting 3 to 1 losses Mogami has not returned. I put more planes in figuring that over time his quality will drop and mine will increase. Also on March 1 the Zero bonus declines again. But no battles occured so many of my fighters are back to bombing the Japanese in a desperate effort to improve the experience of the air groups. Right now the Hurricane groups are all in the 60s, with one exception in the 70s, but 3 of the Hurri groups are at 61 which is not good. The Dutch are a bit worse with 59 and 54 xp in the two groups of Hawks that are operating at Mandalay.
Down in the South Pacific Mogami continues to attrit the allied airforce as my planes launch the occasional bombing attack on KB. He also caught the cruiser Adelade in Harbor at Noumea and sunk it with 15 bomb hits. So far the Allies have not put a single bomb on the Japanese, but have lost between 120 and 170 aircraft trying.
It was not all bad news though on the 27th CAP from Koumac hit the Japanese over Noumea:Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 18
D3A Val x 94
B5N Kate x 158
Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 13
Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 4 destroyed
D3A Val: 7 destroyed, 16 damaged
B5N Kate: 14 destroyed, 2 damaged
The Jap bombing attack caught some planes on the ground and pounded an S boat and an MSW but Mogami decided it was not worth it and pulled the CVs back to a position North of Luganville.
The Americans have a lot of planes in the Islands and Efate is now a level 2 field, but the AV numbers are still much too low. More AV is at Suva and 2 base forces, and Airforce HQ and the Americal division are all East of Fiji on transports, when KB moves out of the area the reinforcements will land and it will be possible to put up a serious fight.
On Feb 27th Guadalcanal fell to Japanese attack, 1019 Allied troops were captured.
Strategically my big problem is air losses. The big raid into Noumea has cost me a bunch of planes and Mogami is getting a very nice kill ratio. The British are fast approaching the point where they can fight the Japanese and win, but the Americans are still not there. Regular air combat is good for me, my quality goes up as Japans declines, but I have not been able to force it anywhere but Burma. The loss of Guadalcanal makes this even more difficult since the Japanese can sit there and the Allies cannot move back into combat range without launching a major invasion.
Also Mogami has been very careful about keeping his shipping safe. So I have only sunk 25 or so Japanese ships, mostly because they don't come anywhere near me.
On the bright side Manila is holding down over 300,000 Japanese troops. I have no idea what will happen when Mogami's additional forces attack, but I know he sent more than 10 additional units, it will be a hell of a big hammer. The city may fall rapidly, or it may last until the supplies run low which is still some days away.
Either way hanging on there has been a huge help to both India and the South Pacific. Both these areas are getting stronger by the day, India is now organized and pretty much ready for Japanese invasion, and the troop numbers and air support in the South Pacific will double in the next 2 weeks.
Here is the Intel screen for March 1
