The isolated Allied units trapped on the Salween are now under very heavy attack from the air and ground. Multiple airstrikes from three air bases are softening up the defenders while Three divisions, two tank regiments and 15th Army HQ attack in an all out assault. Even with 72-1 odds the Allies hold on and do not surrender! Shock attacks will begin on the 20th and 21st, lets see if that will force them to surrender!

Port Moresby is now a level 4 airfield and stocked with Betties and should be able to defend itself from Allied naval incursions.

Progress being made against the isolated Allied units stuck on the Salween River. During these two days, the three UK Mtn. Arty units surrender. Guess the Indian Infantry units got tired of taking orders from the Brits and left them behind.

The 48th XX,(of clearing Luzon fame) begins to land at Kragen to finish the liberation of Java from the Imperial Dutch Empire.

Air intell tells me that the 5th and 7th Bomber Goups with B17E's are based at Darwin. A nice Battleship bombardment is in order but they are busy elsewhere.

A sub laid minfield at Pago Pago is discovered shortly after it was laid. To bad!

Post by Mark VII »

Leaflet dropped by aircraft on Indian Troops trapped deep behind Japanese lines near the Salween River. It reads in part:

Attention Indian soldiers! Your English masters have already surrendered, why do you keep fighting for these cowards? Save your lives and surrender now! Join us and help kick the English imperialists out of your country for a free India! We shall work hand in hand for the betterment of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere! India will be a great nation once again!!!

B17 raids get a rising star

Post by Mark VII »

During the 2/22 and 2/23 turns, The 5th and 7th Bomber Groups based at Darwin attacked Lautem. The bombing results were not great from the Allied perpective plus 3 Zero's were shot down in exchange for 7 B17E's being splashed but there was one noticable additional result:

LCDR Sakai, S. of F1/Tainan Daitai is credited with kill number 7
LCDR Sakai, S. of F1/Tainan Daitai is KILLED

Lashio, 2/24-2/25/42

Post by Mark VII »

Bali taken so Java now isolated. The 48th Division has finished landing at Kragen, now on to Soerabaja to join the 35th Brigade/B and Victory! Allied airattacks in the Java area have diminished to almost nothing, wonder if they are saving their strength for the final battla as there is no escape for most of the aircraft there.

In Burma, Lashio is found to be defended by only two BF's and falls easily to a SNLF. IJA units continue to redeploy for the assault on Rangoon.

Operation SP begins 2/26-2/27/42

Post by Mark VII »

A SNF is Fast Transported into Koumac but the retreating ships are caught at long range by American dive bombers from Noumea. I now know that the Saratoga and Enterprise are in the New Caledonia area. I had suspected for two weeks that a carrier was near by so it is confirmed costing my 2 probably 3 minor ships. Operation KCofSP is considered a success, now we need to discover the identity of the ground unit noticed at Koumac. Since I am seeing ground units on every hex of New Caledonia, I wonder if American code breakers have been telling Ed anything???

Luzon is officially declared secure as the 11th and 71st PA Divisions surrender at Aparri. The Philippines is now a backwater in the war with only a couple of PA units stuck on unimportant isolated islands.

With the fall of Medan, Northern Sumatra is secured and the Allied air in Southern Sumatra and Java is now isolated and trapped unless they attempt to sail out thru the Japanese blockaid!

Four days reconing Midway tells me that there are 9 ground units stockpiled there with Wildcats and Warhawks providing aircover. Wonder what Ed might be planning with all of those units???

USN ASW group waxed 2/28-3/1

Post by Mark VII »

We are a couple of turns ahead of this turn so Ed knows 'What Up'.

Operation SP (South Pacific) is in full motion with almost 140 ships at sea descending on their objectives. The operation is covered by the full weight of the KB (Ed knows this now so no secret) in case the American Carriers want to play. SP has several targets under its umbrella. Objective 'KC' is Koumac and 24th SNF FT'd there has discovered half of the 14th New Zealand Brigade defending and are in big trouple as the Kiwi's are attempting to drive them back into the sea. Landings have been made on Objective 'LU' (Luganville) and it is found to be undefended and will be a operating forward airbase in a day. Recon tells me that Objective 'EE' (Efate) is also undefended so part of a SNLF and a BF will land there on the 2nd. Recon is also telling me that Objective NE (Noumea) is defended by 3 ground units plus many aircraft. Naval Air Search is seeing alot of shipping off 'NE' but no enemy CV's. So I am wondering if the two CV Air Groups I have seen are operating from the airfield while the CV's hide elsewhere? A Company from the Maizuru 1st SNLF has been ordered to Fast Transport to 'NE' and tell me what Allied ground units are defending. The lone Otori Class DD making the run is expendable. I worry that Ed may have brought in a first class Infantry Division(considering the NZ Brigade already spotted)which may change how I land on New Caledonia.

The American four DD ASW TF that attacked and damaged a Sub last turn was totally destroyed by the KB. They didn't stand a chance with no friendly aircover.

Operation 'SP' score so far: IJN...2xold DD's, 2xAPD's and a small AK sunk with a I-class sub moderately damaged with USN...4 modern DD's sunk, I'll take that! Operation 'SP' is on schedule, lets see if Ed tries to get in the way?

A not overly large bombing mission on Palembang gets very good results. The 48th Division begins its attack on Soerabaja but gets repulsed. I shall say again, those Dutch seem to be the best fighters the Allies have, to bad they will gone in two weeks!

AK Massacre 3/2-3/3/42

Post by Mark VII »

KB was ordered to a range of 240 miles East of Noumea with all a/c on naval strike to see what would happen. No Carriers were found and no Wildcats were defending the airspace so I think the USN Carrier Airgroups flew off to their carriers. The question is will the Americans return and defend Noumea or will they flee? The Kates and Vals did find plenty of targets, you could of called it a target rich environment. 12 AK's found and destroyed! The good news is that since there was very little flak, no airunit has a fatigue level in the double digits so they are ready for any American interference!

The 24th SNF is under heavy attack at Koumac, they give as much as they receive and continue to hold! The Company from the Maizuru 1st SNLF gets ashore at Noumea and finds the 30th Aussie Brigade, 71st Aviation and a Base Force. It would seem that Noumea is not as well defended as I feared.

A group of ships passed over the I-10 in the hex South of Noumea as they fled the port. No CV's were sighted but I wonder if they were present. An Allied TF was later spotted 240 miles SW of Noumea. American combat ships are nearby, do they want to play or is the United States Navy going to just abandon the defenders of New Caladonia?

A very important troop convoy is moving south from Singapore so Palembang continues to be pounded from the air with many Allied a/c being destroyed on the ground. The troop convoy reached its destination(Kragen) untouched!

In Burma, Myitkyina falls with little resistance so China is now officially isolated from ground supply via India! In fact, our truce in China is scheduled to end at the 3 month mark in the war on March 8. Time sure flies when you are having fun!

Speaking of Burma, the direct siege and investment of Rangoon is getting ready to start. Four IJA Divisions plus supporting arms have been resting just outside of the city and within the next week they will move in and begin to eliminate the 15 or so Allied ground units hiding there.

Noumea port HIT 3/4-3/5/42

Post by Mark VII »

Recon on the third told me that the Port of Noumea was full of shipping which was ID'd as a bunch of AR's and AS's. Half of KB was ordered to port strike as a secondary mission. Bad news is that only one strike was launched, good news is that a bunch of AV's, AR's, AK's and a AD were pummeled by 800kg and 250kg bombs. No one reported sunk yet but there are a bunch of valuable ships who's time is about to come. I think Ed was planning on making Noumea a major forward base. A bunch of important auxiliary's are about to die since KB is moving to within 120 miles of Noumea!

The 30th Aussies destroy the Maizuru 1st SNLF Company B but their mission is successfull and I know that Noumea is not as heavily defended as I feared. I believe that the 14th NZ Brigade is split between Koumac and LaFoa, with the 30th Brigade, the 71st Aviation Rgt and the 117th USN BF are in Noumea.

In two days on the 7th, the main landings will begin if all goes to plan. The Yokosuka 5th & 7th SNLF's will land at LaFoa to pin the Kiwi's and prevent reinforcement of Noumea. At Noumea will be a major landing consisting of the 2nd XX, 56th XX, 8th Tnk Rgt, 1st Eng Rgt, 17th FA and the 16th Army HQ. I would hope that the Aussie's will not be able to resist for more than four days once we are fully ashore! In conjuntion with the landing will be a battleship/cruiser bombardment with KB airstrikes on the airfield. I feel that Saratoga and Enterprise are nearby in the direction of New Zealand but I think they are running away. Lets see what happens???

Noumea Landing 3/6-3/7/42

Post by Mark VII »

Major Japanese forces landing on Noumea! The Americans do not have the means or the will to stop the onslaught! Two thirds of the 2nd XX, 56th XX, 8th Tnk Rgt, 1st Eng Rgt, 17th FA and the 16th Army HQ are landed on March 7th along with devestating airstrikes and a naval bombardment. The end is near for New Caledonia. Japanese Naval Air continue to slaughter the Allied merchants and auxiliary's, most have not sunk yet but when this is over the haul is going to be incredable. The holding force lands at Lafoa and Koumac is reinforced. No body can move along the island of New Caledonia. The bombardments and airfield attacks are very effective as my intel screen tells me that 38 B26B's, 17 B17E's, 9 Hudsons and 7 PBY's are destroyed on the ground. This only could of happened at Noumea so I hope these reports are correct???

Palembang is captured with its industry and oil totally intact with five Allied squadrons being caught on the ground. The airfield is alittle beat up but is operational for fighters and should be repaired in three days.

The Intell screen tells me that the Allies lost 109 a/c these last two days to my 13 a/c. Totals for the war are 1217 Allied and 595 Japanese to all causes!

The War in China has begun. Troop movement and a Japanese bombing campaign has begun to try to use up Chinese supply by attacking airfields. The Changsha airfield took over 100 hits from the Army dive bombers, that will spend some supply getting repaired! Overall nothing much, YET!

The landings on New Caledonia continue and the Nomea assault force will be ready to attack on the 10th. The 24th SNF at Koumac is still resisting the Kiwi's and is now giving more than they receive.

The action in Burma will be picking up again as my Rangoon Assault Force is rested and are now moving into the city. There are some 16 Allied units there and they would be best advised to surrender now as the end there is coming soon.

Noumea Overrun!

Post by Mark VII »

The Aussies of the 30th Brigade are unable to resist the might of the 2nd and 56th Divisions for more than eight hours once the assault begins. The defense of Noumea folds like a house of cards with four squadrons of a/c caught on the ground along with a bunch of valuable Allied shipping scuttling itself to avoid capture. A sad day for Allied forces!

The final attack(hopefully)on Soerabaja begins. Progress is made with the fort level and losses are light to moderate. The 38th and 48th Divisions of Yamashita's 25th Army are leading the way, the 23rd Eng Rgt is supporting with the 7th Tank Rgt waiting for an opening to race into the city. Victory should be soon with this major Dutch Bastion!

Multiple heavy air attacks on the ground units in Rangoon continue(not shown)in preparation for the big assault. IJA units are now at the Allied perimeter looking for weak spots. It will take a few more days for all of the assault units to get into place.

New Caledonia Campaign

Post by Mark VII »

Yes there is the 14th New Zealand Brigade left to mop up in Northern New Caledonia but Operation South Pacific is over with heavy losses to the Allies and light to the Japanese. Unless there is a last second attempt by the American Navy to save the Kiwi's, Naval losses for the Allies are 26xAK's(all but one are large AK's), 4xmodern DD's, 2xMSW's, 2xAR's, 2xAV's, 1xAS, 1xAD and 1xAP. In the Air a Hudson sqn, B17E sqn, a PBY sqn and a B26B Group are caught on the ground and destroyed. The 30th Australian Brigade and two BF's have surrendered with the 14th NZ soon to be in the bag.

So far the Japanese have only lost at sea 2xold DD's, 2xAPD's and a small AK. A couple of other AP's were damaged plus a sub, but they are in no danger of sinking. A few a/c from KB were lost but I'm sure it was less than 10, we can handle that. Very little of the ground assault force was lost, yes there is some disruption but they will get over it. An example is the 24th SNF with was FT'd to Koumac and discovered half of the 14th NZ Brigade. Day after day of Shock assaults where endured but in the end they were inflicting more losses than they received. A unit citation is on the way from the Emperor himself! They were withdrawn by DD's on the 12th with 95% of their elements disrupted, but everything was there and the 24th will be fully recovered in a week or two.

Even though no major American fleet units were seen or engaged, I feel this was a decisive loss for the American Navy. Ed seemed to be preparing Noumea as a major forward base and proceeded to lose a s#itload ships including 2xAR's, 2xAV's, 1xAD and 1xAS which are priceless auxiliaries.

Battle of Wake Island

Post by Mark VII »

Several large American task forces have appeared at Wake Island or directly East heading West, Ed is up to something! So far only Battleships and DD's are seen as they bombard with light to medium effect. I think American intell missed the move of the 14th CD Rgt to Wake and the DD Tucker paid for that oversight as she is pounded by 5.5inch guns. So far the Americans have not showed me anything but I'm sure more is on the way. Wonder if any carriers are supporting this operation? My immediate reaction is to dispatch 2xNell Daitai and a Zero Daitai to see if any damage can be done. Other assets are also under way to the threat area! Still have not figured out how my small supply convoy got away from the American Battleships?

The two rested IJA Divisions were just to much as Soerabaja surrenders after the third day of assault. Still, the Dutch do their job and unlike Palembang, heavily damage the oil fields nearby. The airfield is in good condition and will soon be operating twin engined bombers supporting the 25th Army's advance North to clear the Dutch out of the rest of Java.

RE: 2nd Battle of Wake Island

Post by Mark VII »

This Wake Island thing is a serious attempt to retake the Island by the Americans. I think its alittle premature but here we go.

Ed knows this now, I am defending with the Sasebo 5thSNLF, 51st and 65th Naval Guard Units, 14th Coastal Gun Rgt, 125th&126th IJN BF and the 128th IJNAF BF. Not an overly strong ground defense but it will do! As the invasion fleet finds out, there are 8x5.5inch CD Guns, 18x4.7 inch CD Guns and 36x3inch DP Guns waiting to eat-up some thin skinned transports. There are also three RO type subs nearby ready to help out. To my surprise, two of them get a total of four hits and will get away. The small local airforce of 18x Nell's, 9xZero's, 9xMavis's and 9xEmily's do good work and get some hits while losing only 7 of their number mostly to a battleship bombardment.

Ed is not landing enough infantry. What attempts to shock attack after the landing is the 111th RCT, 7th AF HQ, 51st BF, 19th&47th Eng Rgt's, 1st MAW Aviation Rgt and the 807th EAB. It would appear that Ed thought this would be a walk over and he had plans to immedeatly start improving the airfield and operating a bunch of a/c shortly there after.

By the time the 2nd Battle of Wake Island is over, I think this is going to be a unmitigated disaster for the Americans!

Balikpapan 3/16-3/17/42

Post by Mark VII »

The Second Battle of Wake Island continues but it seems that the American high command has elected to abandon the troops that survived the landing. All fleet units are in flight in the direction of Midway. Another element of the Wake Island operation developed when American bandits attempted to storm Marcus Island from submarines. The op started off very bad when the sub Pollack struck a Type 93 mine killing some 90 invaders before they even stepped ashore. The shock attack also did not go well as the Americans found many more Japanese combat units than they thought.

Several Dutch cities fell these two days with lots of oil and resources stacked on the docks ready to ship to Japan. Balikpapan had over 140,000 oil units stored near the harbor.

The 18th will see the beginning of the all out assault on Rangoon. The 15th Army HQ will lead the 5th, 18th, 21st, 33rd and the 55th Divisions in the assault. The 1st and 6th Tank Rgt's are ready to drive into the town center once the front line is smashed. Two combat engineer Rgt's and a Arty unit are in support. We hope this will not take any more than 4, maybe 6 days.
