Russia vs Japan at last?

Post by dudalb_slith »

I really hope that one of the changes will be to add the Russians..and the Allied minors for that matter..to Rising Sun so we can finally have an official version with battles from the Normonhan incident in 1939 and the Manchurian campaign from 1945. That this was not done in the Rising Sun expansion pack was sad. Instead they had a somewhat lame "Japan Invades America" campaign and scenarios.
And throw in the Allied Minor so we can have some battles of the Dutch vs Japan in the East Indies in 1942.
In fact, I thing a single campaign and scenario editor for all three Campaign Games, a la Steel Panthers:WAW is the way to go.
Eventually I would like to see some of the more obscure nations added as well as the Spanish Civil War and The Ethiopian War also, but the above should be easy to accomplish.I am still amazed the Talonsoft did not bother to include a common editior when they released their complete set.

I think the editor should be a key element in the new release. Have you ever used TAOW editor? The interface was terrible but the functionality was fantastic. You could choose from dozens of countries with a simple flag selection, assign unit color palettes, map editor so that you could recreate any place in the world and choose any two armies. Improving the "user friendliness" of the thing would be paramount but it would be great to have the flexibility to recreate anything from 1930 to 1945 in any theatre.

Rising Sun Far East.

Post by asiaticus »

There was a project, Rising Sun Far East, that did put the allied Russians, Mongolian Peoples Republic, KMT China, PLA Chinese, French Indochina and the Dutch East Indies (KNIL)into Risiing Sun along with Axis Manchukuo, and Thailand. It also had the PLA Chinese and North Koreans as Axis for Chinese Civil War, and Korean War scenarios vs US and UK.
There was an addon of Soviet, Mongol, Japanese and Manchukuoan units for the Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese border clashes at Chengkufeng and Nomonhan.
It could easily be adaped to this new version of Rising Sun. It currently can be downloaded from the Blitzkreig Club's dowload and FTP area as a series of files for each country slot.

There is a patch I made do clear up some of the gliches with the original and some new aircraft types and stuff for the Japanese, and KNIL that is not posted there.

It sounds like they are planning on shipping it as one game, with everything merged together. If that is the case it shouldn't be a problem to pit the Russians vs the Japanese. The OOBs might need to be updated somewhat.

If the RS Far East addon for the Russians and Japan is added it it will not be a problem. Old late 1930s oobs for Japan and USSR were compiled and the oob dates go back to 1937 so the Chengkufeng anb Nomananhan/Khalkhin Gol campaingns could be made into scenarios.

Yeah it would really make buying the new eddition worth while if they could get all the mods folded in to it. I hate installing mods when I have to do a bunch at a time.

That would be my preferance.

Russia and China and the Dutch East Indies at least should to be added. Major campaigns involving these countries were unquestionably involved in WWII against Japan. Also Axis Thailand was involved in the invasion and occupation of Burma.

My veiw is that the World War actually began in Asia with Japan setting the precident of aggression against China in 1932-37, that was soon emulated by Mussolini in Ethiopia and Hitler in Czechoslovakia and Stalin against Finland and the Baltic States for that matter. For that reason I'd like to see the dates set back to at least to July 1937 and the outbreak of open warfare with China and include the allied KMT China, Mongolian Peoples Republic, Communist Chinese and Axis Manchukuo. Manchukuoan forces and Mongolian forces were involved at Nomonhan in May-September 1939 and in the Soviet Invasion of Manchuria in 1945. Also the Japanese had major forces of Mongol and Chinese puppet troops that were involved in the War from the begining to the end of the war.

I'd also include the French in Indochina. They were involved in a serious clash with the Japanese in 1940 and a war with the Thai in early 1941.

The Russian forces in the Far East are somwhat different from EF oobs, a NKVD Border Guard Regiment was directly involved in the initail clash at Chengkufeng, and in Mongolia the Russians used Armoured Car Brigades unique in their army. Also their 1938-39 infantry and armoured units were somewhat different than the forces in 1940-41 in EF. Also there would be older model aircraft.

The earlier Japanese forces would also have to be included particularlly the Square Divisions, Cavalry, and old SNLF and armoured formations and China Mixed Brigades and Independant Garrison and Infantry Regiments and some heavy artillery that was used in several campaigns on the mainland. Also there would be older model aircraft. For WWII there should also be the Japanese Army and SNLF parachute and glider units for the Dutch East Indies campaingn and later for the Phillipines and Okinawa.
