P-38 CHS changes
Once again I'll post a work sheet with foot notes. Data in (parenthesis) is CHS only. There was an extra slot for the P-38L so I included that using numbers from Lockheed. If you have a Pilot Operating Handbook you'll have J numbers for the P-38L. These are higher due to the evolution of fuels right as the P-38 became available. However, maneuver and durability remains the same. See notes below.
Most of the changes deal with climb rates and production. So I don't see much impact on the game...mostly just some corrections.

* Change to 5 replacement; 25 production. Net result is an increase (180 vs 121) but you are loosing (-29) two 38F FSs that start 12/41. P-38G actually began delivers 8/42, but best to leave it at 10/42 as deliveries only trickled into the PTO that early.
Historically P-38s came into the PTO piecemeal replacing P-39s and P-40 Fighter Squadrons as they became available. The first replacement squadrons were the 39th FS/35th FG which began receiving theirs the summer of 1942. Immediately afterwards the 9th FS/49th FG received theirs then the 80th FS of the 8th FG and the 8th FS 49th FG. Two more operating off Guadalcanal were partially equipped. 339th FS/347th FG; 70th FS/18th FG together with P-39s.
+ P-38G top speed 400; 2,700 ft/min Some of the numbers above match but not war emergency power numbers. However, other aircraft are given best performance numbers under combat power. So these are corrected above. Also by the end of August AAF Fighter Command lifted limits placed upon Manifold Pressure as kinks in intercoolers were worked out. Hence higher numbers in later 38Gs. 38G had slightly better sustained climb rate than Zero.
Typical combat radius for the J/L variants was 275 miles for 410 US gallons of fuel (no external tanks) and 650 miles with 740 US gallons (w/ 165 gal external tanks). These ranges allowed for 20 minutes combat at target and 30 minutes of reserves. With 300 gal tanks, missions were made over ranges in excess of 1000 miles and durations of nine hours or more.

& P-38L was heavier and possessed the new V1710–30 engines as well as aileron boost and dive flaps. Improvements were made in both fuel quality and intercoolers to allow greater manifold pressure. Most P-38Ls were run under P-38J regimes but in the field were given higher-octane fuel to give most power. Yet over all maneuver rate didn’t change as most PTO combat was at lower altitudes where the aileron boost and dive flaps made little difference.

3 questions:
First there are references to P-38's carrying 4000lb bomb loads, why 3200 limit in the J's and L's? Unfortunately i am at work and cannot quote any of them off hand.
Second, it is my understanding and I may be incorrect, but does't a plane have to be introduced in a reinforcement squadron before it becomes available for upgrades?
Third and last, I have understood that the power assist flaps enable the P-38 to turn tighter at a higher speed at low altitude, something that most none power assist planes have problems with?

I didn't understand the loads either....so I didn't touch them. I wanted to put 1k bombs on as well as these were carried, but when I looked at the game it didn't seem to fit. So I thought I best let sleeping dogs lie. I know history well enough, but the game dynamics are still beyond my reach at times.
Can you restate the second question. I'm not sure that I understand it. Give me a for instance.
As to the third and last, that I think I can speak to.
First, let me say that aileron boost doesn't tighten your turn radius. It is rather that it increases roll rate, especially when trying to overcome inertia....which is a big problem with twins. Hence the unique control throttle in the FTD...a wheel instead of a stick. You still fly one handed so it matters little....probably just an assurance, or a way to close the deal with the federal government. To be sure, you have to roll before you turn...so you might get into the turn a split second sooner, but it doesn't make your turn radius tighter. Some 38 pilots, most notably Ira Bong, would chop throttle on the inside engine to let the outside engine pull the forked tailed devil through a tighter turn. But that is a different issue all together, and you have to be a confident pilot to do that.
I interviewed two P-38 pilots and both of them said the boost mattered little at low altitude, and sometimes if the fights were down low, such as in the MTO and PTO they just shut it off. It was too touchy in the approach to landing. I asked specifically about the J-25-LO series improvements. Stanway makes the same observation in his book on P-38 aces in the PTO.
Besides all this, you don't want to mess with the maneuver ratings in the game without looking at every aircraft. That number is far more complex than just turn radius. I just didn't play with those at all. My mods are modest really.

funny, I was just reading on the 38 last night at work (do some of my best reading/reseach at night when I am at work)
the statement I read said that it "Provision for two bombs of up to 1600 lbs (726 kg)each under wing cetre section"
but it also tells of when the drop snout apeared, the raids flew with 1 1000 pounder, also states that could fly with 2, and on short missions could change to either 1 or 2 2000 pounders
so it conterdicks itself
but would say, up to 1600 on each wing was normal load, it could go higher if the mission was not far away
this book is saying the 38 J was the fastest model to see service, with a top speed of 413 at 30 K
and interesting, the 38 F did not carry any bombs
(I know, each book ends up with different info, this is just what the one I was looking at last night has)

Well, what ever you use you have to use it across the board. What I've found is that best initial climb rates are being used. So best to keep it with than frame of reference but then also use time to alt as a cross check. Climb rates closer to sea level are stronger than those at altitude even with a turbo charger, and or, compressor.
That 30 minute they are talking about is at war emergency power too. BTW...FAA law is still 30 minutes day time; 45 minutes night time; for remaining fuel. So it is something of a national standard. However, you do see ranges here out to bone dry running on fumes miles. That seems a bit extreme given the pressures of formation flying, navigation over water, and combat. But again...has to be across the board.

My understanding is that the 58th and 59th (and 60th) Fighter Squadrons were transferred from the MTO (Italy) to the CBI theatre via Karachi (they would appear at the "Middle East" base in CHS), and were equipped with P-47s (I am guessing the P-47C) at that time. That is just from online sources, however.

They trained in them....others did this too. But when they hit operations they were in P-38s. As the war progressed more and more squadrons did their run up to combat closer to the front....intead of state side transiting to their normal fighter planes.
BTW...they are plenty of missing squadrons here in the CBI theater. These fighter groups are not full.

I haven't checked this in the CHS 2.0 beta, but looking at the new docs things check out. Exction being a compromise in keeping one P-38E/F squadron on West Coast instead of taking them both out. I didn't see anything about production rates on the new birds. Some of these were changed. Replacement rate changes are mentioned.
