YH v IS2m Dark Days

Post by Yamato hugger »

My 1st attempt at an AAR. Not going to post battle results unless they are truely extrordanary.

Battle is scen 16. V1.72 (will upgrade to 1.77 as soon as website is back up).

House rules: No recon flights below 6000'. Units leaving a restricted command (ie China and Kwangtung) have to pay PPs to leave.

Dec 8 found Jap paras floating down like cherry blossoms at San Jose, Taytay, Puerto Princa, Roxas, and Cagayan securing all these locations. The Allies wisely withdrew the B-17s from here. Bettys, Zeros, Babs, and Vals moved into these new fields to interdict the Asiatic fleet when it leaves. A Jap sub scored a hit on the AS comming out of Manila. Jap planes scored hits on ships left in Manila harbor, Manila airfield, and Clark field.

Allied ground forces withdrew from Alor Star as elements of the glorious 5th div moved in. Allied bombing of shipping targets in Gulf of Siam scored minor hits on 2 AKs. Jap landings at Khota Bharu were aborted in favor of another landing site to be announced later. Allied airpower is concentrated at Singapore (including the AVG). Some air units at Victoria point and Georgetown. Presumably heading for Burma. Jap bombings of the port at Singapore found it empty.

The KB bombed and sank several ships in the PH area. 2 AKs were moving west/SW from the harbor. A massive DD force with Wildcat escort was bombed NE of PH sinking several. 15 Cats were shot down to 3 Zeros and 1 Val. Presumably this force was sent to clear out Jap subs that start clustered around PH. No subs were attacked.

The enemy was forced out of Nanchang, and bombardments by land and air occured at Hong Kong.

Landings on Guam.

238 Jap TFs are at sea on Dec 8 [:D]

Air losses for the day were:
22 P40E
21 Nell
15 F4F
10 Zero
6 P40B
5 Sonia
4 Nate
3 ea P35, Vildbeast, Ann
2 ea P26, Blen I, Buff I, Mary
1 ea B17C, Hudson I, Blen IV, Topsy, Babs(army), Dinah, Sally, Mavis, Betty, Kate, Val

Ships confirmed sunk were:
DD Conyngham 250kg bomb (near PH) 113,65
DD Monaghan 250kg bomb (near PH) 113,65
AK Castor 18in torp (near PH) 110,69
AK Hirondalle 18in torp (near PH) 111,68

All in all not much different from what I expected. Was hoping to kill the B17 group at Cayagan, but oh well. The DDs and AKs in Hawaian waters was a pleasant surprise. I always hang around a few days to kill sub hunters. Some nasty surprises comming for allies in the days to come.

Dec 9. I-124 finished the job she started on the AS Otis, putting 2 more fish into her and sending her to the bottom. The British DD Scout made contact with a landing force NW of Luzon that hadnt yet met up with its escort, and put a torp into an AP. The group of 7 APs put 23 shells into Scout leaving her a burning hulk that would be finished by land based air in the morning. Airfields at Manila and Clark hit again and again hitting ships in harbor.

Numerous DDs attacked by KB again in the PH area, apearantly the group that was attacked the previous day returned home. Several sinkings some from new hits, some succumbing to wounds inflicted yesterday. AKs were also hit and sunk.

Refugees from Singapore attacked by land based army dive bombers at and near Georgetown sinking a MSW. Only 8 Zeros decided to escort a raid by Nells on Singapore, and the Nells didnt fare well. Hits were achieved on the airstrip however. Songkhia was attacked with minor bomb hits on a couple of ships.

Shock attack at Hong Kong was made at 3-1, dropping its fort level to 6. Alor Star fell without defense to the 5th division, Guam fell to the 5th NLF, and Jolo surrenders to airborne assult.

Air losses for the day were:
20 Nells
10 Vals
9 Kates
8 P40B
7 Buff I
6 Zero
5 Nate
4 ea P40E, Hudson I, Swordfish
3 ea P26, F4F3, Betty
2 ea Blen I, Babs (navy)
1 ea P36, Catalina I, Topsy, Sally, Sonia, Jake, Claude, and much to my dismay Tojo.

Ships confirmed sunk were:
DD Worden 250kg bomb (near PH) 112,68
DD Aylwin 250kg bomb (near PH) 112,68
DD Ward 250kg bomb (near PH) 112,68
DD Scout 18in torp (near Laoag) 45,47
AS Otis 21in torp (near Manila) 42,53
DMS Zane 250kg bomb (near PH) 112,67

Many enemy subs and PTs gatering in coastal bases on NW side of Luzon. A cloud of DDs from Manila heading south for Boreno were attacked by some of the most experienced Betty groups I have achieving no hits. They will be attacked again tomorrow.

Dec 10. Turn started with several ships sinking from damage from prior attacks.

Brit DD Thanet contacted one of my sub hunter groups west of Bataan. Minor hits on both sides, but she sinks later in the day to air attacks. TF 11 under R Adm Hashimoto (2 CL 5 DD) escort group contacts PG Isbel and 2 PTs at San Marcelino. CL Natori takes shell fire and a torp. Hopefully can make it back to Formosa before she sinks. PG and 1 PT are sunk. I-123 puts 3 torps into an AK in the gap between Taytay and San Jose. Numerous airstrikes on ships in the Sulu and Celebes seas. Scattering tactic is good vs aircraft, but is very bad vs surface ships, and my surface forces have arrived from Palau and Saigon. TF 18 under R Adm Hino (6 Kagero DDs) find and sink AS Canopus west of Davao. I-123 puts a fish into another AK late in the turn. S-41 launches torpeedos at Hyuga and later at Choaki north of Luzon. TF 23 (4 Shiratsuyu DDs) under R Adm Hishikawa find and attack SS Salmon hitting her twice. Paras take San Marcelino.

Bombings at Manila harbor find it empty (not surprising) and scored hits on airfields at Clark and Manila. Stikes hit 1 of 2 APs at Johore Bahru. Again inadequate escort for the Nells going to Singapore. Will have to rotate squadrons. The isolation of Singapore begins: airbone landings at Andaman, Sabang, and Jambi.

Quiet in PH sector other than a Glen spotted a CV and 8 other ships heading NE at 14 knots 18 hexes from PH.

Edit: Forgot to mention a 3:1 Chinese attack at Nanning and a 0:1 Chinese attack at Changsha. These attacks were ignored by the general staff. Jap shock attack at Hong Kong reduced forts to 2 with a 4:1 attack. It should fall tomorrow.

Air losses for the day were:
13 Nells
3 ea Sally, Nate
2 ea Sonia, Zero
1 ea P40E, P40B, P26, Topsy, Babs(army), Ann, Tabby, Betty, Kate.

Ships confirmed sunk:
DD Dewey 250kb bomb (near PH) 112,68
DD Chew 250kg bomb (near PH) 112,68
DD Thanet 18in torp (near Puerto Princea) 39,56
PG Isbel 5.5in gun (near San Marcelino) 43,50
AS Canopus 24in torp (near Davao) 40,62
MSW Toowoomba 100kg bomb (near Georgetown) 23,43
AP Pres Madison 18in torp (near Jolo) 39,57
PT 32 4.7in gun (near San Marcelino) 43,50
AK Compagnia Filipinas 21in torp (near San Jose) 40,53
AK Latouche 18in torp (near Leyte) 44,58
AK Luzon 18in torp (near Manila) 42,52

STRATEGY THUS FAR:

Initial attacks aimed at isolating PI and Malaya to take out as many fleeing ships as I can, but more importantly to discourage others from attempting to run the gauntlet. Phase I of my attacks are to secure Clark Field, and Singapore. Land forces are marching in from Indo-China as we speak, invasion forces heading to Luzon, Mindano (reinforcements to Cagayan), and Kuching (with BB escort just in case PoW and Repulse show up).

Clark seems to be an easy objective. Recon reports 3 units in Bataan, 6 in Clark and 21 in Manila. The 2 APs in Johore Bahru seem to be loading troops which is good for me. I would much rather kill the troops at sea than on land. If he keeps all forces in Malaya, I expect to have Singapore secured around Jan 15. Clark will be much sooner than this.

Since I seem to be facing the "run-away" defense, I am already embarking my Phase III (yes phase 3) base forces to their bases to begin thier prep work. Where I will strike after securing the SRA has already been determined. Stay tuned.

Dec 11. Several small ship actions. My sub chaser groups (4 or 5 DDs each) and a couple of CAs are picking off AKs running from Luzon in the Sulu Sea. 3 PTs and several AKs sunk. I lost the Minekaze to a PT torp. Air stikes on his 1 ship groups moderately effective today. Some hits are scored, sinking 1 or 2. He put a bomb into a couple of AKs and a MSW off the Malaya coast.

Jap landings at Naga.

Hong Kong fell to the 38th div, Nanning was evacuated and occupied by the Chinese. Taipang undefended vs the 5th div, airborne troops secured Kuala Lumpur.

Air stike on Singapore fared much better today after sending the Tainan squadrons in. 22 enemy aircraft destroyed, including 10 AVG to 8 Zeros and 3 Nells. My Nell pilots are buying the drinks for the fighter pilots tonight! [:D]

Some allied DDs hit at Balikpapan by Kates from the Ryujo. Jap landings on Morotai (east of Menado). Enemy bombers hit an AK in this TF.

Air losses for the day were:
13 P40B
12 Buf I
9 Zero
5 ea P40E, Sally, Nell
4 Nate
3 ea Catalina I, Ann
2 ea Sonia, Betty
1 ea Blen I, Brewster 339, Wirraway, Tabby, Kate

Ships confirmed sunk:
DD Allen 250kg bomb (at PH)
PT 31 40mm AA (near Puerto Princia) 39,55
PT 33 4.7in gun (near San Marcelino) 43,50
PT 41 4.7in gun (near Bataan) 41,51

AK Kanlaon II 18in torp (near Cagayan) 44,58
DD Minekaze 21in torp (near San Marcelino) 43,49

Subs lost contact with CV headed for west coast. CL Natori is at 77 float damage, level 9 fire, but is only 1 hex from port. She should make it.

Edit: Japan has 4 aces:
Maj Kuroe
--------47th Ftr Sentai (Tojo) currently stationed at Songkhia
Ltjg Ota
--------F1 / Tainan (Zero) currently stationed at Saigon
CPO Shimakawa

Dec 12. Again, several small naval actions in the Sulu Sea and Celebes Seas and air strikes as well. The last of the Asiatic fleets PTs were gunned down in 2 seperate actions. One of the PTs put 4 40mm into a DD starting a minor fire. The other died peacefully. Naga fell undefended to the Sasebo 1st SNLF (which landed yesterday). S-36 was D/Ced and sunk NW of Vigan. 3 seperate attacks resulted in 8 hits on the first attack, 2 on the 2nd, and 1 on the 3rd. We are now under v1.77. APD 32 on the first attack made 5 or 6 attacks.

Air raid on Singapore was unopposed. P40s and Buffs were destroyed on the ground. In fact all air losses today were either ground kills or op losses. Nells rejoiced :) Enemy APs that were at Johore Bahru are making a break for the north. A Mary scored a hit on the Speelman. More attacks tomorrow.

Airborne forces secured Pinrang, Makale, and Pomala on Celebes without oppesition.

Air losses for the day were:
6 P40B
5 Buff I
3 Sally
2 P40E
1 ea Babs (navy), Zero

Ships confirmed sunk:
PG Asheville 800kg bomb (near San Jose) 40,55
AVD Childs 18in torp (near Menado) 40,66
MSW Bittern 24in torp (near Twai Twai) 36,61
MSW Quail 250kg bomb (near San Jose) 40,55
MSW Lark 18in torp (near Twai Twai) 38,60
S 36 type 95 d/c (near Vigan) 38,60
PT 34 4.7in gun (near San Marcelino) 43,50
PT 35 4.7in gun (near San Marcelino) 43,50
TK Gertrude Kellog 24in torp (near Jolo) 39,58

AK Gov Wright 18in torp (near Legaspi) 45,55
AK Palawan 800kg bomb (near San Jose) 40,55

No air combat anywhere today. Allied forces in full retreat everywhere. Yamamoto makes reservations at the San Francisco Hilton for mid-June [:D] CL Natori made it to port.

Dec 14 (Must have forgotten to post one).

More of the same. Complete allied runaway. Some ships sunk by surface combat and some by bombing soutn of PI. Jap 5th division is south of Kula Lumpur. Allied forces on Java seem to be clustered in Soerabaja. It is the only port or airfield occupied on Java.

Jap paras secures all the unoccupied bases on Suluwesi, Sampit (on south side of Borneo) and the unoccupied bases surrounding Palembang. Jap landings by the 23rd Mxd Bde on Cebu.

Air losses were light (9 aircraft total from both sides). 2 Martains were shot down by flak when they attacked the Kongo and company bombarding Kuching and O-19 put a torp into an AK north of here. It will probably sink, but not before it unloads its cargo.

Dec 14 (prior post had wrong date. I was looking at the date after the replay, not the date of the replay).

Chinese units took Pakhoi on the coast forcing the 19th Mxd Bde to the east on the rail line (which is where I wanted it anyway). MSWs start clearing Hong Kong harbor. An under strength Jap corps is defending NW of Canton and has been since Dec 9. Chinese havent advanced to contact yet.

Jap landings on the NE side of Luzon, and moved into Legaspi. Large gathering of single ship allied TFs in the So China Sea west of Luzon. Sallys and Vals made some hits today. If they move a little further west the Nells from Saigon will probably hit them. ASW force of PGs attacked S-41 at 48,48 to no effect. 5 Hudsons made an appearance over Jolo hitting a Sally. Jap planes from Formosa destroyed some parked planes at Clark. Japs continued to land on Cebu. The allied attacked them at 1:1 odds causing 4 Jap casulties and 1 gun losing 437 of their own and 13 guns.

Kongo group bombarded Kuching again. 3 allied PTs made 2 runs at them, but neither side hit anything. No landings yet at Kuching. Probably tomorrow.

Jap landings at Menado. CDUs fired 2 shots. The Langley and a few misc AKs were sunk by gunfire in the narrows east of Borneo.

Landings on the north and west sides of New Britian. Wirrs and Hudsons from Rabul scored no hits on TFs operating in the area. 2 allied TFs spotted at Rabul. 1 is an AK force, the other is likely to be a CL. I have surface forces on the way to say hello.

A force of bombers from Java attacked the troopers on the south side of Borneo. Elements of the 5th div along with the 4th rgt took Georgetown in Malaya. 6 Wildebeests were destroyed and 3336 PoWs were bagged. Other elements of the 5th division attacked an Indian bde at Malacca at 2:1 and the defenders held. The Indians counter-attacked at 0:1.

Narau Is was taken by the 51st NLF. Airborne assult at Namlea and Raba north of Darwin found them undefended.

Air losses for the day were light again, except the 12 Wildebeests destroyed on the ground.

The Langley was the only ship worthy of mentioning that was lost. There were some MSWs, AKs, and TKs but these are becomming too numerous to mention so will hereforth only report combat ship losses.

Dec 15. Airbone troops continue their assult on allied positions by securing Lingayen. Tuguegarao was secured on the east side of Luzon by armored forces. Only 1 unit is trapped in the north unfortunatly. Some more allied ships fall to guns and bombs in the So China Sea. Landings continue at Cebu. The allied forces there attemted an assult to dislodge them, but the 23rd Mxd bde is too strong for them and the attack goes in at 0:1. DD Minazuki was torpedoed east of Legaspi by S-39. She is making for port alone and in very bad shape. I fear she is lost. This is a significant loss, as this 90AA DD was earmarked to join Adm Miyaji's carrier TF2. A replacement is dispatched from TF3. Saesbo 1st SNLF took Legaspi. More planes destroyed by bombing Clark field.

Last of the mines is cleared from Hong Kong. For once in my life, no minesweepers hit a mine while clearing the harbor.

The PTs returned to Kuching again tonight to meet the Kongo group for no hits again on either side. The Kongo group then bombarded again. Then, after the sun came up, CL Marblehead and 4 Dutch DDs showed up. A DD was sunk and the CL was set afire. 4 shell hits were reported on Kongo, but checking her damage she has 0 sys, 0 flood, and a level 1 fire. Other ships in her TF were also barely scratched. Then they tangled with TF 22 under R Adm Hiki (4 Asahio class DDs). Torpedo hits were observed on 3 of the remaining 4 allied ships, sinking a DD that was crippled by the Kongo group. DD Oshio was heavily damaged and wont likely make home port but Marblehead and Everteen are also reported heavily damaged and the remaining allied DD is reported aflame.

AKs were attacked by the Ryujo south of Kendari scoring several hits. Martains from Ambonia heavily escorted by fighters attacked and hit an AP south of Menado.

CL Kashima and 4 PCs escorted a landing force to Rabul catching 2 allied APs suspected of trying to load Lark force. The first one had 6 shells pumped into her, setting her on fire and killing 39 troops and a vehicle. The second took 40 shells and sank with 1469 troops and 29 guns. Hudsons and Wirrs from Rabul made several attacks missing everything. Then CL Adelaide showed up. 2 Jap PCs were sunk (only taking 6 hits each) and a 3rd was scuttled after (99 sys, 97 flood, and a level 49 fire). Kashima took 4 total hits and is in good shape. The allied CL took 11 hits total, damage unknown. All bases on New Britan fell to Japanese forces except Gasmata (which will fall tomorrow) and Rabul.

Dutch submarine KXVI was attacked in the slot between Borneo and Jolo by R Adm Hinos TF 18 (6 Kagero DDs). 1 DD attacked 2 times and another only once. I am able to confirm that DDs use 1 d/c ammo per attack. 2 hits were scored on the boat.

Malacca fell to the 5th division forcing the Indian 22 bde back towards Singapore. A Jap AK sank SE of Songkhta from hits recieved several days ago. 2 more will likely sink in a day or 2.

Air losses were again light. 8 total aircraft from both sides lost, only 1 of each type.

Ships sunk were:
DD Kortenaer 8in gun (near Kuching) 28,56
DD Piet Hein 24in torp (near Kuching) 28,56
PG Tulsa 800kg bomb (near Puerto Princesa) 39,55
PC Toshi Maru #3 6in gun (near Rabul) 61,88
PC Tama Maru #8 6in gun (near Rabul) 61,88
PC Shonon Maru #15 6in gun (near Rabul) 61,88

Dec 16. Due to a clerical error there were no airdrops today [:(]

Probably the last allied transport sinking for several years occured in the Celebes Sea today when the Anakan was bombed and sunk by Sallys based on Jolo. More AKs were sunk in the So China Sea by surface ships and aircraft. As predicted, Nells from Saigon were also involved in todays festivities. S-41 was attacked 3 times by the PG Seiko Maru hitting her once.

Interesting developments in the Kuching area today. The Marblehead and her 2 DDs merged with 3 TMs and came in again. Only instead of BB Kongo, BB Haruna, CA Takao and CA Atago as usual our friend finds TF 4 under V Adm K Yamamoto with 3 BBs, 5 CAs, 2 CLs, and 5 DDs. TM-13 (lucky 13!) is the only allied survivor. 1 torp hit on BB Fuso is all the allies managed to do, and the total damage inflicted was 8 sys, 0 flood (dont ask me how) and a level 3 fire. TM-13 engages again later and escapes undamaged, and yet again after that but this time takes 29 shells and sinks (I detect anger by the TF commander to put 29 shells into it!). O-19 puts a torp into DD Michishio severely damaging her, but she should make port. O-19 later torpedos, shells, and sinks AK Kamoi Maru. O-19 further launches at yet another AK later missing her. O-19 now has a bounty on its head. Several ASW groups are on the way to collect. TF4 bombards Kuching and troops begin to land. CL Sendai was hit by a bomb late in the day for minor damage.

Troops continued to unload at Rabul. 2 empty AKs were sunk by CA Canberra, CL Perth and 2 DDs at Gasmata. Too little, too late for New Britan.

Martain bombers with fighter escort from Ambonia attacked Ryujo. 1 Zero was lost to 6 of the attackers. AKs to the north are attacked by groups of 3 Martains missing everything. Ryujo launched bombers at a tanker east of Timor, but missed also.

Singapore was bombed again today hitting 2 P40s and 43 hits on the runway.

Menado was taken by the 35th bde capturing 3351 troops and 14 guns. Cebu fell to the 23rd Mxd bde capturing 5493 troops and 27 guns. Gasmata also fell undefended. Chinese forces attacked at Changsha losing 2484 and 93 guns to just under 400 Imperial troops.

19 total aircraft were destroyed today, Martains leading the pack with 4.

Ships confirmed sunk:
CL Marblehead 16in gun (near Kuching) 28,56
DD Witte de With 14in gun (near Kuching) 28,56
DD Everteen 14in gun (near Kuching) 28,56
TM 7 8in gun (near Kuching) 28,56
TM 10 8in gun (near Kuching) 28,56
TM 13 5in gun (near Kuching) 28,56

To date, the allies have lost (confirmed sunk, in the sunk ships list):
1 CL, 14 DD, 1 DMS, 3 PG, 7 MSW, 9 PT, 1 AVD, 1 AV, 1 SS, 19 AK, 1 AO, 3 AP, 2 AS, 3 TK

Jap losses:
1 DD, 3 PC, 4 AK

Dec 17. The last of the reported allied ships in the South China Sea were dispatched today by guns and air. Troops continue to unload at Kuching. Another AK torpedoed in the harbor, but it will finish unloading before it sinks. Another Dutch boat, but not the O-19. Shes probably out of torps. Kuching bombarded.

TF 12 under R Adm Yoshizumi (CL Tama, CL Kiso, and 5 DDs) greeted CL Leander, CL Achilles, and an AP at Rabul. Leander was sunk by 127 shells, and 3 torps. The AP took 13 shells and a torp and was left in sinking condition. Achilles escaped unharmed. 54 men of the NGVR bn were killed when Leander sank. Obviously using a fast transport group. Expect more losses when that AP sinks [:)]. 3 Shell hits on a Jap DD caused minor damage and a fire. Jap landings at Emirao Is north of Rabul. Rabul falls to the 56th bde.

5 Martins and a P40 shot down (only 3 Martins on the aircraft lost log for the day) to no losses when they struck at Ryujo again. A secondary raid from Ambonia hit an AK south of Davao. Bulla falls to airborne assult.

Bombs fell on Wuchow for the first time today. Light Chinese losses. 4 Jap dive bombers damaged. 4 Bettys were lost on a raid on Manila.

14 aircraft lost total today. The 4 Bettys at Manila lead the list.

Ships confirmed sunk:
CL Leander 24in torp (near Rabul) 61,88
5 allied AKs and an AP sunk today
1 Jap AK sunk

OBSERVATIONS:

Allied player is making 4 very grave errors that I will spell out later. 2 of them are policy errors. The other 2 are tactical.

In the eastern Pac, I am way ahead of schedule. So Seas detachment is 2 days away from Wake yet, and I already have Rabul. So Seas usually assists in the capture of Rabul, so I am about a month ahead in this area.

In eastern DEI, Landing forces closing on Ambonia and Kendari. A few weeks ahead of schedule here.

Allied carriers havent been seen since Dec 9th or so. I suspect they are cooling their heels on the west coast waiting for the other 2 carriers. Most airfields unoccupied in the DEI except Soerabaja and Ambonia. All ports empty except Soerabaja.

Kendari and Ambonia are staging bases to Timor, the last of the short-ranged planes escape route from Java. Once I start my landings here the allies have to make a choice: stand and defend on Java or bug out. I will be prepared for either.

Since I have Rabul already, I am tempted to make a grab for Moresby while I can. And perhaps New Caledonia after. This will threaten Oz from east and north.

On Malaya I have succeeded in splitting his forces. 4 units are trapped on the east side of Malaya. There is a huge tactical mistake on his part in this area.

In the PI I have the 18th and 48th divisions on the ground in northern Luzon moving into Clark soon. A huge mistake on his part here also.

Dec 18. Slow news day.

Landings continue at Kuching.

S-39 was attacked by Cpt Ohe's TF36 (5 PGs) east of Legaspi. Several of the gunboats attacked several times. 4 hits were reported. Clark and Manila were bombed destroying 2 Catalinas.

Troops landed in the Admiralty Islands, Kavieng, Buna, Dobodura, and Lae. Emirau Island was taken. 2 allied TFs spotted rounding the tip of New Guinea headed away from Rabul.

Allied TF 1123 unloaded elements of the 27th Aus bde on Andaman. The 27th lost 225 of its number in a 0:1 attack on the defending troopers.

Kate from the Hosho put 2 torps into an AK SE of Borneo. Air attacks on the Hosho and Taiyo missed.

Singapore was bombed again, hitting 2 more P40s. Tavoy fell undefended to the 1st tank rgt destroying a Vildebeest.

Martins from Ambonia escorted by P40s attacked an AK TF unloading at their base and missed.

Troopers grabbed Dili on Timor.

13 air losses today. 3 P40B and 3 PBY topped the list.

1 Jap AK sank today on its way to Saigon from Malaya. It had been bombed a week ago on its way to Malaya.

Troopers assult Tawi Tawi, and the southern and western most bases on Mindanao. Allied army here seems to be cowering in Davao. 65th bde on its way over-land with the paras that had secured Cayagan on Dec 8. They should make contact in 4-5 days.

Ambonia fell to the 21st Mxd Bde today. 1701 allied casulties. Kendari is next. Minor B-17c strikes on shipping in this area from Darwin. No hits.

Air raid on Singapore hit another P-40. No ground action anywhere in Malaya. Not even bombardments. 17 allied units in Johore Bahru. 13 Jap units here, with more comming. Siege begins tomorrow. Possibly nothing left to attack with [:D] Moulmein fell to the 1st armored without defense.

The armored blitz from Kuching advances another 60 miles towards the western parts of Borneo. Base forces, fighters and ASW aircraft are in Kuching. The northern wing of the Java assult is almost ready.

Dec 22. Continued landings on Iloilo. Movment continues into Clark field. Allied units there now number 3 and 1 in Bataan. Airborne troops secured the last base on Mindanao save for Davao and the northern half of Leyte. 65th Bde should be crossing the river into an automatic shock attack in 3 days at Davao. 8th tank rgt moved into Vigan. Air raids on Manila and Clark.

Landing forces for Kendari have been circling east of the objective for 2 or 3 days waiting for their cover force to arrive. I am so far ahead of schedule I am having to hold back to avoid costly mistakes. Kaga and company showed up, spotted Repulse 60 miles away, and pumped 8 torpedos into her. She sank in minutes. Hudsons from Borneo hit a MSW.

More landings in the Solomons and southern Coral Sea. Lunga and Tarawa amoung others that fell in this area today.

The siege of Singapore started today as predicted. almost 54,000 Japanese began barraging 31,000 defenders at Johore Bahru. More Japanese arriving every day.

Only 8 total aircraft destroyed today. Flak got 2 Kates and a Val. The rest were all operational losses. 3 airplanes for the Repulse. Not a bad trade. [;)]

OBSERVATIONS:

Allied player is making 4 very grave errors that I will spell out later. 2 of them are policy errors. The other 2 are tactical.

Inside Information:

Number 1 "grave error" was running away to Manila right off. I allocate 5 divisions and 3 brigades to PI, but way back on Dec 10, when he had 21 units in Manila, I knew I could divert 3 divs and 3 bdes elsewhere and still accomplish my mission on Luzon.

I personaly think defending at Manila vs Bataan is a mistake against even a normal adversary, but more so against me. I dont go all out to conquer the PI. I bottle up the allies, leave 1 division to guard them, and use Clark field for my air training academy. So, my only objectives on Luzon is to secure Clark (which is now done) and bottle up the allied army (also done). As far as I am concerned, the PI is secured right now. I will bomb them out of supplies, keep my ASW patrols up so they cant pull troops out and wait until March/April. By then, 1 division can handle taking them out.

I know this because another game I have going (which is in late March 42), I sent 1st VM div (yes, 1st Viet Minh div - I have all 4) to take over guard duty from the 48th. A couple of turns ago they attacked the allied army at Bataan at 3:1. A few more attacks and it will fall. The 1st VM div is only at 53% strength I might add.
