Some people believe it was IJN sub that sunk Syndey, and I've read theories as far fetched as involving rogue waves and accidental ammo explosions (no UFOs or giant squids or Tesla Death Rays or Elvis so far, but someone somewhere is working on that I guess)

IIRC this is still very controversial issue in Australia...

Yes. Even to this day, her loss remains the most controversial single event in Australian naval history.

The only thing that sank the Sydney was the incompitence of her Captain in getting within 1000 yards of a ship he couldn't identify with her crew not at action stations lining the the rails taking in the view.

Didn't the Komeran have 5" guns? What a braodside.

6 x 5.9" guns as well as light 37 and 20mm AA and TT tubes, at a 1000 yards hard to miss

The first salvos knocked out the bridge and fire control, the light AA sweep the decks clean of exposed crew and a torpedo hit knocked out both forward turrets. The battle was over in the first 5 minutes

i fact the sydney sank the raider , borh ships sunk euch other.

I cant recall exactly but it was i coincedence that was found out what really happend.

Well according to the link, there were German survivors, including the captain, who were later taken prisoners, and its their story that we hear. I don't think anyone say the Sydney sink though.

not to diminish the crew or show disrespect, but its kinda sad/pathetic that a Heavy Cruiser would be sunk by a little german raider

not to say that the raiders werent reasonably powerful for their size

perhaps she took a mag hit or sumthing[&:]
