what would be the best defense of PI then??

Against the AI a person could probably say: do this, do that, and when he gets to here do this. Against human players, it doesnt work that way. You have to react to what your opponent does.

On Mindanao, all you can do is run to either Davao or Cagayen (Davao is better because of the river). On Luzon what I do is defend San Macelino, Clark, and the Hex between Naga and Manila. Doing this, he cant land behind you (unless he wants to tangle with the shore guns) so you can wait and see what he is doing. Remember, the defender has to react to the attacker. Keep your PBYs at Manila and Bataan. Base your fighters where the Japs arent bombing. If he is hitting Clark, base at Manilla and vice versa. If he is hitting them both then base at one of the southern islands (north of Mindinao). Make him fight you. You will lose airplanes. This isnt necessarily a bad thing. The less planes you have, the less PPs it costs to change them to SW Pac. Pull them out to Aus when you only have a few left. If you have to pull out of the PI because of what the Jap is doing, go to Aus if you only have a few planes (4 or less), otherwise head for Java.

If the Jap isnt pressing hard on Mindinao, you can base B17s there. If he is, you might want to base them on Luzon, or you might want to pull them back to Java. Either way, you want to keep them in the fight (this in my opinion was the 2nd of his mistakes in this game, not fighting me tooth and nail with his airforce from the begining). Anything you can do to slow the Jap offensive is a victory for you. If you can sink a troopship filled with troops, thats a lot of points. B17s are very effective vs early war Jap planes, use it! I have one B17 pilot with 2 kills. [:D]

Again, depending on what the Jap is doing is how you conduct the evacuation of Luzon. First unit you want to get out is Asiatic HQ. You need this to assist ship repairs later in the game. 2nd units I try to get out is the PAF Av unit. These are the 2 most important in my opinion. Evac by sub, fly them out by PBY to Borneo (if the Jap isnt pressing hard here), however you can get them out. the HQ you can just save a fragment and you are good to go. The Av unit, you want to get the whole thing out, and ideally, you want it to be in Australia because of the Av support in it.

One game I have going the Jap ignored PI totally, so I flew the Marine C-47 unit that starts in the South Pacific, and the C-60 Dutch unit into Bataan and have been flying the whole American army in the PI out. I got the armored units out with the AKs that start there, and the rest I flew out to China. Marine AA and 4th regt, the 2 artillery units, PS Cav unit, PS regt, Asiatic fleet, PAF, EAB. All gone to China (walking them to India). 31 RCT is being pulled out now. This game is in early Feb 42.

As for your naval units. Use your PTs wisely. Keep them close to the front, but pick and choose your targets. If the Jap is hitting a lot of places at once, pick something that doesnt look like it is heavily escorted and hit them. You can re-arm torps in Manila. Send other PTs to PI from other areas. This is the best place to use them, so do so! Dont just hit the base that he is landing at. He may have bombardment group comming to hit it. Anticipate where he is going and hit him at sea before he gets to the beach. I have been known to hit Pesedores and Formosa with my PTs hitting a landing force as it is still loading! The nice thing about PTs is they are 1 point apiece if you lose them, but if they hit something ad sink it, you have just scored more points than the whole squadron costs [8D]

As for the subs, frankly I use them for troop transports initially. Use your Dutch boats as subs (they have better torps) and use the US boats to get troops out. There again, move the troops to where you can safely load them on AKs and APs and go back and get more. Dont run all the way to Darwin if you dont have to. The AKs that start here and there in the PI send them either out by any means possible or send them to Manila (sounds crazy, but hear me out). Heading these small groups (1 and 2 ship groups) can often make it out to the east sailing for Alaska or Hawaii. If the Jap chases them then GREAT! He is pulling ships and planes out where they are of no use. The AKs in Manila dont be in too big of a hurry to try to get them out. A lot of Jap players will circle the PI like sharks trying to kill these ships. Often staying in port is the best thing you can do. Put 1 or 2 ships (I use tankers) in a TF as cannon fodder to draw naval air attacks. Load fuel with them as well (never supplies). The planes he is using to hit these ships arent being used to hit your airfields. Then your P40s on LRCAP mix it up with them. Great attrition tool. When it looks like you have a gap, load your AKs with the armored units and scoot. Keep them all in 1 TF, cover them with as much airpower as you can and run for it. Commit your light surface ships from Java and elsewhere to help cover them. Again, the way out will be determined by where the Jap is. If he is strong on Mindinao or even Kendari slide along the Borneo coast (east or north, again depending on situation).

Edit: I forgot, move HQs to Bataan right away. This will help draw the supplies from Manila to Bataan.

Hope that answered your question [;)]

Continued landings in the Solomons. Coral Sea has been secured.

Dec 31 New Years Eve. One thing I forgot to mention was an allied attack at Manila yesterday. I dont remember the casulty firgures off the top of my head, but I do remember it was 0:1 so it couldnt have been pretty for the allies. 1:1 Jap attack at Iloilo reduces the forts to 0. Jap supply situation there is ample, having more than needed. Maybe wait 1 day to put the final blow here.

Landings continue at Macassar. Landing forces approaching Java from the SW covered by Kagas TF 2. Allies PTs and at least 2 subs reported in 3 TFs in Soerabaja. 12 Vals attempted an attack on the PTs (Zeros failed to escort). 5 Vals were lost and attack aborted. Panzer Army Pacifica closing on Batavia. Recon aircraft from Sampit says Bativa is empty and 1 base force sized unit in Malang. Recon says 18 units in Soerabaja. 7 enemy units in Balikpapan. Harrassment strikes continue south of Kendari, north of Timor. B17s continue to raid Ambonia for minor results.

42 Jap units of all type at Johore Bahru. TF 4 (Fuso group) joins in the land and air bombardment and bombards by sea. Attack comming tomorrow.

The 2nd div (originally earmarked for PI landings) and the 56th bde from Rabul begin landing on Port Moresby. TF5 (Mutsu group) is trying desperately to keep pace with the offensive. Should be in bombardment position tomorrow. TF1 (Akagi) is covering 120 miles SW of PM. The 3 slow CLs are with the invasion troops and take the brunt of the coastal fire. Most of it appears to have bounced off however. Kashii took 3 shells and reports no damage except a level 1 fire. Kashima reports 7 hits for a total of 2% system damage (not sure if that was from the run down there rather than the gunfire), and Katori reports 4 hits and no damage at all. 2 APs were also hit with 2 shells each reporting 20% sys on each.

Munda and Russells are last allied bases in the Solomons. Russells were landed on today, Munda tomorrow.

Narwhal made an attack on an unesorted AK and missed.

20 aircraft lost today. 5 Vals topped the chart.

Jan 1 42. Updated to 1.795 by mutual consent and because I am upgrading to it in another game to try to keep the 48th div (in that game) from poofing.

First of all I want to say I am not a WitP rookie, but I made a incredibly rookie mistake today. In my excitement at finding Batavia undefended, instead of landing south of it with my 5 panzer regts, I landed on the base itself. I must have hit a half dozen mines. The troops made it ashore, and none of the AKs have sunk (yet), but a seriously stupid move on my part. Elements of the 56th div begin landing at Malang (SW of Soerabaja). The Dutch Tjilitjap garrison unit defends. Recon sees nothing north of Soerabaja on Java. Raid of Dutchies (4 Hawk, 4 Demon, 6 Brewster, and 8 Martins) take a run at TF 2 (Kaga group). 8 fighters and 3 bombers are lost for no hits and 2 damaged Zeros.

I-164 scouting out Midway finds AV Wright, puts 2 torpedos into her and watches it sink.

Sallys raid Balikpapan again. Minor damage to airstrip. 6 Martins and 2 Hudsons from there attempt to hit the Hosho group. 6 attackers are damaged by the defending Claudes (some reported as kills during the landing cycle).

Unescorted Nells raid Port Moresby from Rabul today.

Ground attack at Johore Bahru goes in at 1:1. Fort level reduced to 5. Ground attack at Iloilo captures the base at 11:1. 5982 Fillipinos join the Imperial Empire as PoWs to 22 Jap casulties.

Mandalay falls to 2 AA regiments courtesy of the river crossing rule.

Russell Is fall, Munda is landed on. Solomons will be complete tomorrow.

20 aircraft lost, Martins number 1 with 6. AV Wright sunk.

OK, here is the original plan of the assult of the Phillipines:

Image

The Yellow units were released to other operations because he chose to defend at Manila instead of Clark.

This probably wont be terribly detailed, but here goes:

Image

The purple lines are landings I was able to make because of the diversion of assets. The 38th Div (starts in Hong Kong) was originally assigned to assult Port Moresby, but the 2nd Div (from Kagoshima) was given that task when it was released and the 38th was diverted to east Borneo instead. The 16th, the 4th, and the 56th divs went and secured Timor, and are currently assulting thier "Phase II" objective which is Java.

As you can see, defending Manila really freed up a lot of my units and speeded up my advance considerably because I have no intention of tying up 5 divisions to take out the PI. It will fall in due course.

Now if he had defended at Clark, that would have been a different matter. All these forces would have been committed to battle until Clark was secured. Then they would have moved on leaving 1 division to hold the allies in Bataan.

if he decided to defend Clark field/Bataan, couldn't you just had decided to bypass PI as well, or is that level 6 airfield (or whatever it is) too important for future ops. I'm just asking cause i'm allies in my PBEM, and i'm defending Clarck/Bataan and my oppenent only as some 50,000 troops in PI guarding them...so it looks as if he's just bypassing PI for now to deal with it later

Well if he isnt bombing you, he is making a mistake. You can base bombers there and really screw with anything he is trying to move around the area. While any attacks you may be able to mount my not be decisive, every little bit helps.

If he is bombing you, you need to look at what he is bombing you with. Is it "front line" aircraft (ie Bettys/Sallys escorted by Zeros) or "reserve" aircraft (Lilys and/or dive bombers escorted by Nates)? If he is using front line aircraft, this is good, as they arent being used against your main forces. If he is using second line aircraft, put a squadron or 2 of P40s in there. He has to shoot down 4 of yours for every one you kill in order to win. If you can keep him from scoring 4:1 on you, you are doing what you should be doing to keep him from winning. If not, pull the planes out.

Secondly, if you can, base C-47's and C-60's in China (the name of the base escapes me atm, its the one 2 hexes NW of Canton). From here you can fly troops out and start them on their way to India. Again, every man you can get out is a victory for you because that is that many more of yours he has to kill to make up for not being able to kill them there in the PI. If he is bombing Clark and not bombing Bataan (most likely) fly them out of Bataan. As long as you have an active airfield, you are good to go. You can also move troops out of Bataan by submarine.

I take Clark, base all my aircraft that is less than 80 experience there and bomb Bataan with them to A) train them, and B) to keep him from flying them out.

The last allied base in the Celbes fell (Macassar) to the 35th bde. 3302 allies to 52 Japs.

Miri and Banjarmasin fell to paratroops on Borneo.

Bombardment at Johore Bahru again today. Attacks again tomorrow. I have to get scooting if I am going to bag Singapore by the 15th.

Port Moresby was attacked at 3:1 dropping the fort level to 2. Should fall within a week.

Pagan fell to 1st armored in Burma.

Munda fell as the last allied base in the Solomons.

No hits on shipping by the allies at all today despite several attempts.

Only 13 aircraft lost today. PBYs with 3. 2 Jap AKs sunk from damage incurred days ago.

Jan 3. Slow news day. Allies strikes in the Timor/Java region put a minor hit on 1 AK. AN allied air attack on eastern Timor Was met by Zeros and 3 Hudsons were shot down. Allied bombers hit nothing.

Johore Bahru fell to a 7:1 Jap assult.

Allies shock attacked at Manila at 2:1 pushing 18th div back to Clark for a day. I have to admit, I dont understand why he is burning his supplies for nothing. Allies forces in Vigan attacked the 8th armored at 0:1. Stick a fork in them, they are done.

Jap attack at PM was 2:1, dropping the forts to 1. Makin fell.

21 aircraft (Hudsons, PBY, and Zeros each with 3).

No sinkings.

Jan 4. Again not much to report

Blen IVs escorted by Buffs hit the oil center at Mandalay without resistance.

20 B17s encountered 18 Oscars over Batavia as they also went for the oil. 1 Oscar lost for 5 forts damaged. Merak was captured by 3 armored regts. Brunei fell to airborne assult.

PM recieved light damage from an air raid, and was hit by a 2:1 land attack that dropped its fort level to 0. I will rest my troops a day or 2 before I finish the job.

Allied units trapped on the east side of Malaya attacked the 4th Mxd regt at Kuantan at 0:1.

12 air losses today. 3 Nells lead the list (2 were op losses)

2 new aces I forgot to mention a few days ago (both in TF 2):
LCDR Nagaishi (BII-1 Hiryu) Zero
WO Kubota (AII-1 Kaga) Zero

Jan 5. Allies sweeping the mines I laid at Midway. AK hulls make excellent minesweepers [;)]

56th bde and 2nd div take the day off in Port Moresby. TF 17 bombards the base twice to keep the Aussies heads down. Final attack (hopefully) tomorrow.

B17s raid Batavia again, but this time 31 Oscars and 6 Tojos are waiting to greet them. 1 fort shot down, 15 damaged to 1 Oscar and 8 damaged. Several minor attempts at hitting my shipping in Java Sea fails. A squadron of allied PTs attempted to make a run at AKs in SW Java but found an empty harbor. I saw them comming and moved the TF north last turn.

Air attacks intensify at Singapore. Leading elements of the Jap army cross the river. Shock attack goes in at 2:1, and forts are reduced to 4. I expect another attack tomorrow when the rest of the army crosses the river. The units that crossed today begin to rest. This was his 2nd grave tactical error: defending at Johore Bahru. The problem with defending here in force is, once you get booted out of the hex and back to Singapore, your troops are already exhausted and they cant mount an effective defence of the city. It is much more effective to hunker down behind that river and let them come to you. I usually leave a couple of bdes in Johore Bahru to slow them down, but the main force army units (the few that get left behind that is. I usually evacuate Malaya personally).

In China, he is advancing in the Wuhan area. He will probably move towards Canton soon judging by the build up in this area. Only things south of Peking worth saving is Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Nanchang so I am not too concerned. I will let him attack all he wants in southern China using up his men and supplies.

13 aircraft lost today. 4 Anns lost to flak.
