Just installed CHS

Post by vonSchnitter »

Gentlemen,

I just managed to d/l and install the CHS mod. Even after reading most of the on-line docs, I still expected little more than some minor tweaks and some rather "oppinionated" so called enhancements.

But boy, I have been but rarely more off the mark with my expectations and prejudices.
I just ran day one in Yamamotos socks and poked around the map afterwards.

The thing which send some shivers down my spine was a bunch of Kates chasing down a PG off Shanghai - yeah a bunch of BBs got clubbered at Pearl Harbour, but the PG incident sets the tone for me.

Even a cursory look at the new "Map" has done a lot to "synchronize" my understanding of the war in the related theaters derived from books - whereas the stock offering left a lot of question marks.

From my neck of the woods, CHS is about to unvail the true potential of the WitP game engine in terms of a simmulation of history. I am very impressed, to say the least.

My hat goes off to those dedicated souls working on the project.

Cheers

Welcome to the wonderful cyber-world that a group of fellow players created for us to live in. The level of detail in a Theatre-Strategic game is enormous.

If I was not married, I would have taken a week off "work", had a standing order for a pizza delivery every day, and not come up for air. The CHS team added significantly more enjoyment to a game that has already surpassed all other games in my long, and not so illustrious gaming career {Gaming is my career--work is my hobby that pays for my gaming}.

If you are married, I hope you have an understanding wife. Or she can join mine in the WITP Widows Club. I think their main therapy is trying to rub the numbers off credit cards.

I'm playing the AI. I doubt it would be a good or interesting read.

Always glad to see "fresh meat" in the Pacific..
The game itself has (to me) been a tremendous improvement over any other wargame of its' genre, and the CHS team went into the fray knowing they would have a LOT of potential critics, because most of the players are amateur historians, each with a certain "specialty" of information to draw on.
After the CHS release, all of us came out of the woodwork (with our suggestions for further improvement, and the CHS team did not even lose pace, in continuing to add to and further enhance this great game.
As mentioned above, even "armed merchant cruisers" have been added, and when some "fanboys" find units they feel should be included, and aren't, it's usually because the CHS team filled near EVERY open slot in the editor with new units for every nation involved !!!
(With newer units "surfacing", it has become a matter of "what do we throw out, to include this unit?"...............)
Andrew Browns' map just adds so much to the game...........................
Nobody has tried to out-shine the other, all CHS members have worked as a team to benefit all.......................

Well, I just kept going ...

jwilkerson - thx for the hint, found them ! And two more, one at Ominato and another one. [;)] Raiders can be fun - in a PBM I guess. Just a few questions: The Ominato Raider has two float planes - upgraded to Jakes asap. While the Ukishima Maru (with the same Capacity rating of two (AC ?)) does not allow me to transfer a group from some base to ship ? Am I missing something ? (Indipendent from an AV, 4th Fleet from base ???) And may we have one or two of the German Navy Raiders ? And the German "Monsoon" Subs operating from Penang in the Indic (esp. with the extended map ?)
The new "classification" of ships, really turns assembling useful TFs into a headache. Stripping the long range MSWs off any ASW capability nearly got me .... I guess there is more like this.
The attention to detail is amazing - just watching a group of "Susies" delivering their puny 30 kg Bombs to Allied AKs is fun ! Training squadrons for Dive Bombing and Torps ! I have no clue what to do with them, but it is there. And on it goes, the small changes causing big issues ... Great.

Just a question: I kept the KB close to Pearl for three days - and hit a streak of bad wheather for the period. No flying from the carriers, but recon. Is this a "feature" and if so a very cool one, or just bad luck ?

Cheers

Not sure about why you can't transfer planes about a ship that is ccapable of carrying them - the only problem I've ever had was with Torpedo planes ( at least Japanese ones ) I had to first put the carrier into a TF .. couldn't do it while "disbanded" like I could with all the other air types. SO try that next.

As to more ships - there will probably be some changes to the ships again at some point - but I think we are out of slots - i.e. nomore room left. So if we add one, we have to first remove one.

Training squadrons ? Oh you'll learn ... use them for training !!! Mine are usually in China ... flying ground strikes to get exp up to 70-75 range before going to fight Brits or Amies ...

Yes, every now and then ... we get reports of people having weather issues during there Pearl strikes ... if you're playing AI .. .I guess you could start over again .. if you're playing PBEM .. well those are the breaks ! But really poor weather over Pearl for the at start strikes is pretty rare. Just not impossible. So it is both a feature and bad luck !!!
