WITP or WPO? I can only get one so please help me decide based on your experience of playing both.

Oh, that depends on about 8,000,000 factors... I'd probably get WPO, though. It plays faster, and there's just something about those dreadnoughts, y'know?

Even though it's based on the WitP engine, and encompasses the entire Pacific, it's not the same monster that WitP is. You don't look at a WPO campaign and think to yourself, "that's going to take YEARS to finish".

Bit of a tough one considering one has been around for near on 2 years and the other a week. Depends of what you want to play?

Bluntly

Big CV based air warfare on a historical model throwing bloody great lumps of airbourne steel at each other

or

What ifs.. bloody great lumps of floating steel throwing bloody great lumps of sometimes exploding steel at each other.

Both have merits.......I would say hold on as Matrix have hinted on a deal of sorts - on witp [;)]

Hmm, forgotten about that... Though that "deal" might just have been announced tonight.

Witp is very much a whole theatre micro management air dominant game ( in general - before i get shot down like a betty) with a great deal of historical accuracy. Each turn can take at least an hour depending on how involved you get and your rig!!

WPO is a fast paced surface combat based on a WHAT IF principle. In small scenarios you can play 10 turns in an hour.

I love both but WPO is all I am playing at the moment as it ROCKS big time...

Hmm, I almost bought WitP when it came out and then, for whatever reason, didn't (too busy waiting for HoI2, school, no money, etc.). Now that the Matrix Games has a promotion I'm on the horns of a dilemma - WPO or WitP? On the one hand, WitP price tag is hefty, but it has, from what I understand, a better "worked-out" feel in regards to production and such. I've heard horror stories, but it puts me off a little bit that WPO decided to skip it...I mean, how does the game handle replacements? Do they just pop out from the void even if the Allies overrun Japan and all of its industries? Or does striking at the primary enemy industrial/resource centers still help? Is there any incentive for Japan to do anything other than sink Allied shipping around the Philippines, or go further into DEI?

Replacements are handled by a certain X amount a month. It is almost impossible to overrun Japan, so that will not really factor in. Seriously, there are no where near enough Allied LCU's to hold Japan, let alone take it. Japan can do anything it wishes. It really doesn't NEED to go into the DEI, but then again At this point in time Japan has more reserves than it does in 1941, so the DEI isn't a terribly big concern.

If the industry is you thing, I'd get WitP. If you want to play as a supreme Admiral (I doubt Yamamoto had anything to say about where Zero's were built) then I'd go with WPO.

One final question - is it possible to "upgrade" the download order once you place it to a physical shipment+download once that option becomes available?

No, not yet unfortunately. We've been trying to make that possible all year, but things move somewhat slowly at Digital River.

Isn't there a "burn" option or something of that sort, though? The store FAQ seems to suggest that. I just want a CD for safety's sake. I can do without the box/manual if that is the case. When are they supposed to become available, though? If it's 3 months I can skip them, but if it's 2 days it'll be obviously impractical to do with only a backup CD...

My two cents:

Get WPO. It plays faster because there is very little in the aviation department. Far fewer units to have to micromanage between turns. It also simplifies things as far as Japanese production is concerned.

The only downside (actually two):
1) Spotting units at sea is a little tougher.
2) Softening up ground units for an eventual invasion is tougher because you have less stuff to do it with.

If you decide you like WPO, you can always get WiTP at a later time. And if you master WPO, you will be well on your way to mastering WiTP.

thanks for your input. I have decided to go with WPO. I appreciate your input. Now, I just need to wait for the physical CD to become available.

I think the only thing that turns me off from WitP is that the Allies will get significant technological advancements starting in 1942 and then the game turns in favor of Allies. I will mostly be playing against the AI so I like a game that is even balanced with a strong AI.

Why buy the cd when you can use your CD/DVD burner to do it for you? For instance, I have three games : WitP, WPO and CoG. All three are burned onto their own CDs, except WitP is a DVD with all of the patches[;)]. Each CD is in its own case with its respective serial number printed on the cd cover. Easy peasy japan-easy.[:)]
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?
