Irrelevant (Tony S) vs Impertinent (Ron S): Farting around...
Basically the CHS with WITP 1.795 build but...
Turn Allied DamCon off and adds enhanced durability to Allied warships (only) with each successive refit. Civilian merchants of all nations now have 50% of initial durability as well.
Has an A2A mod much like Nik's. People are requesting that something like Nik's mod be included so why not try it out with CHS production/rates? PDU ON as I want to see if the logistical changes make PDU less of a toy.
Logistics system has been severely altered. Approx 90% of resources on island bases (ie DEI, Australia), India and Burma has been removed and replaced by oil. Only mainland souces remain as per CHS (Japanese Asian continental possesions, Japanese Home Islands, Russia, China, North America). The Middle East and Panama now have larger reource/oil output to compensate). Manila, Batavia and Soerabaja have small munufacuting capability as compensation as well. Panama has small repair yard capability to model Atlantic ports. Reason...to alleviate the 1.25:1 supply/resource dynamic which I believe is too plentiful and eliminates the need for manufacturing supply and shipping it to the front. Should slow the game down drastically and alleviate some of the massive base buildups.
Civilian merchants (AKs) have had their capacity reduced to 20% of CHS caps. Civilian Tankers have had their capacities cut 50%. Military AKAs, AOs, AEs and APs remain the same due to assumption that these are military specific. Reason...to model an abstract civilian economy (alleviates the generic supply model...beans are not bombs).
Device load costs have been doubled for Japanese and Chinese, tripled for Western nations (ie, more equipment, western units required more than the basics Japanese and Chinese units did...SPAM is bulkier than dried rice ) Russia unaltered as I was not going to activate them and they have no shipping as of yet.
Ship max speeds have been cut 10% as these were not utilized on a 24/7 basis as the game allows. This may have positive impact on many things, ability to bombard bases with shoot and scoot runs with impunity from tactical air assets for example.
Ship tower armour removed to make armoured ships more vulnerable to smaller weapons given they were not painted with armour, some areas were unarmoured. Given that tower armour is superfluous to the model I wanted to try this.
CVs having armoured decks because of the presence of armour over machinery spaces are now vulnerable. I cut the deck armour value for these ships by 50%.
This also has the device modifications for ASW specific to CHS. Might be too much but what the hey...it's a test.
Hi there. Irrelevant was nice enough to try out my wacky ideas with me. I figure go big or stay home. Just waiting on Tony for first turn. No real house rules as this modded CHS is designed to see if even the rather massive adjustments to the logistics can curtail much of the issues we see now with pace, hordes of supply etc. I know El Cid for example hates the idea of the 10% speed reduction but I'm curious all the same and may as well see how it feels, eh?

First time even looking at CHS, GT1 might take a day or two[;)].
Actually, I'll just use the same basic strategy that I was using in my most recent previous game, that should be a pretty good test of how much IJ is slowed down by your changes. Of course, if your changes are effective, my most recent strategy won't even be possible!

If these huge changes don't have some real impact I'll give up beer. (for awhile anyway[;)])

Does this make sense to anyone?
Device load costs affect more than the logistics in transporting the units. By doubling the load cost of a device, we increase the carrying capacity required for transport, decrease the supplies and support required per man unit for support of the device and doubles the strength of infantry units.
To accomplish the effect of doubling the support and supplies required by an Allied infantry unit, one would actually make the load cost half that of the similar Japanese infantry unit. The trick to it is that Allied units would require twice as many infantry "squads" in a division, the number of support squads needed would double and the supplies consumed would increase.
The primary reason for this is that the combat system treats each load cost unit as a set of boots.
This system would be a powerful tool except for the fatal flaw that we have only a single slot for the generic support unit rather than support unit slots that could be edited for the forces being represented. Because there is but one generic support unit, it would be impossible to historically reflect the secondary manpower when we tinker with the load costs and number of squads as I assume the current OOB's do now. At most, we can use the motorized support slot as a second standard support to help distinguish the logistical support needed by the different forces in the theatre.
If this is a bit illogical sounding and confusing, then you read it right.

Of all the changes you've listed initially - this is the only one that jumps out at me as being a ( probable ) problem ( yuck - too early to come up with better wording ).
If total resource output available to Japanese is cut - especially if cut massively - this will drastically reduce production. In my current CHS PBEM which is in Nov 43 - resources ( not oil or factory capacity or shipping ) is the bottleneck preventing further expansion of real production. Removing 90% of the resource generation from DEI and Burma will put the Japanese way in the hole from the beginning. Moving this capacity to the MIddle East or Panama doesn't help the Japanese unless they capture those locations. So my fear is that you've killed Japanese production with this one - unless you've also added more resource generation to the Home Islands or the Mainland to compensate.
Maybe I"m missing something !!!

load cost and logistics
Err, nope. Unless....Does this make sense to anyone?
Is the writer saying that the combat strength of a squad or a device is based on its load cost? So in doubling the load cost of a squad/device you have doubled its combat strength, but since there is still the same number of squads/devices in total, the supply consumption is unchanged? IOW, supply consumption is dependent solely on the number of squads/devices, while combat strength is dependent solely on load cost?
Couple other things do concern me about the doubled load costs. One is production, load cost determines how many armament/vehicle/manpower points are consumed by arriving reinforcements/replacements, as well as how much supply is burned in the process. The other is air transport. I hope the paras haven't gotten too heavy to fit onto their transport a/c. Para-sumos. We'll find out soon enough....
jwilkerson, I've never had a problem with not enough resources, but then I've never made it into late 43 either....

RE: load cost and logistics
I did not go 100% across the board. Paras stayed the same, as did other light infantry types.
I hope I did not cull too much of the resources but thats what I want to examine. All the continental stuff remains for Japan. There is so much supply flying around I was hoping it would impact China if it was reduced.
Don't forget, we may have been spoiled with the vast array of supply prior to this. Allies had ample but had major difficulty moving it. Japan had to struggle with supply and fuel basically within the first year.

The resources have not been removed from each base, just reduced 90% from those areas which are up for grabs so to speak and had way to much free supply. They still get the 1.25 resource and 1 supply ratio at the base. This forces the Japanese to husband supply and resources bigtime. Upping the Oil does not really compensate as this is apples and oranges to the production system but I am trying to end around the darn free supply dynamic. Since supply is generic but there is no civilian economy one must assume that the supply is military and therefore should have to have been 'produced" from resources and sent back to the front. Because mangoes can kill and bauxite is edible, the need for much of the shipping in this game goes straight to military sealift because military supply is being produced automatically.

OK, First turn has been sent on the hack job.
Buffering....
Oh, Tony. Can you send your combat report file along with the replay and turn files? The sync problem sort of demands it as the Allied player never knows if the replay is a good one or complete hogwash. Thanks.

Will do. Where can I find the ship art files for CHS? Every time I select a ship that I don't have a side for, I get crashed out. Plus, surface combat looks very strange with ships only on one side....[&:][;)]

Well, before I go anywhere let me just say this. If we are ever going to progress very far into this testathon the devs hopefully will concur with Apollo and the gang with their take on the extreme ease which subs are spotted and lower the probability of sighting a sub by air DRASTICALLY. Granted, the attacks are low but geez louise, the sightings are as common as mint in a "bias free" bar. Are subs easier to spot than say....a twenty ship task force!?! Apparently so.

RE: Irrelevant (Tony S) vs Impertinent (Ron S): Farting around...
Now on to the combat report for the Day in Infamy. This is the one sent by Irrelevant so this is the "master copy" or "actual one". Not into the first turn and a major sync issue has popped up. (Tony also said he lost at least a dozen leaders in turn one after never actually experiencing it before "I have never experienced the leader bug until now. This game ate at least a dozen admirals on the first turn". ...boy, this might not be alot of fun. I have not played PBEM in 8 months and am so keyed to play that I hope all the bugs and stuff don't ruin it) I just sat through a really long replay smothered in sub sightings which is in no way representative of what the real replay is. Just looking at the Japanese one reveals this. I'll post the Allied one when I get the turn. I'm going to post this without editing it for length just to compare.

RE: Irrelevant (Tony S) vs Impertinent (Ron S): Farting around...
I'm waiting impatiently for the turn to arrive...lots of orders to do. In my replay West Virginia and Pennsylvania went down as did the Utah...took a torpedo and the magazines went off but as you can see the Utah only took a bomb in the Jap report. Be interesting to see what exactly sank at PH.

RE: Irrelevant (Tony S) vs Impertinent (Ron S): Farting around...
This is the first turn I have played with 1.795, if that is in any way interesting.(Tony also said he lost at least a dozen leaders in turn one after never actually experiencing it before "I have never experienced the leader bug until now. This game ate at least a dozen admirals on the first turn". ...boy, this might not be alot of fun. I have not played PBEM in 8 months and am so keyed to play that I hope all the bugs and stuff don't ruin it)

I really like the new ship ASW routines so far. Adds alot to the drama and gives some survivability to subs vs large TFs.

RE: Irrelevant (Tony S) vs Impertinent (Ron S): Farting around...
So, Maryland was the victim, not WeeVee, Pennsy and Utah. With Allied DamCon off flooding may yet claim another victim or two. I would have liked to see Tatsuta get hit by four bombs dropped by the Wildcats at Wake...maybe some penetrations.
Sure would be something if basic issues like this sync problem were hammered out. I don't understand how the settings need to be identical on the opposing PCs when the Japanese player's settings are the governing ones, making them identical. They are identical anyway for what it's worth.

I saw the same thing, but nope; didn't even scratch the paint.
This mod has really succeeded in slowing down the IJ advance in a spectacular way! Will anyone be interested in playing it? Only if there are corresponding hobbles for the Allies....we shall see.

RE: Irrelevant (Tony S) vs Impertinent (Ron S): Farting around...
I just finished 12/9. So far I have taken Wake, Guam, Laoag, Batan Island. I am shipping regiments, not divisions, to some interesting destinations. My interesting supply convoys have 10,000, not 100,000 supply. Soon I will have enough empty APs to turn around a second wave....this is very different. The fact that I do not have mega lift capability makes my moves more conservative, not just less volume, but also less ambitious geographically.

Allies have the same limitations to their merchies except the AKA and specialist assault craft which keep their capacity as they did not move civy stuff. I won't use them for merchant service either. Perhaps the 80% drop in capacity is too severe (of course it is) but I want to see just how loose this logistics system was.
