Could blimps be modeled in game?

Post by pkpowers »

I mean it is a hypothetical campaign anyway, and the zeps were used in ww1. The US also toyed with airships, even launching aircraft from them, so to have them is not a great impossiblility...thanks for listening, I believe I will soon purchase this as I love UV!!!

You must be the 754th poster to ask this... No offense, because you couldn't have known. It's been tried, but unsuccesfully, and is still on the drawing board.

Okay.....somebody did some art...cannot remember who it was.

Could you not create air groups of some very slow, long range type with only 1 plane it it? Make them land based?

I guess the down side to that would be if it 'crashed' on the runway though you could create a replacement of say 1 every six months for a zepplin size one and 1 every 3 months for a small short range blimp.

Just a thought

And Brady what midget issue would that be? The "You must be 'this tall' to ride at the county fair?

I'm actually thinking about trying blimps. I suppose if we come up with a pseudo satisfactory method we could release it, and if players don't like them we could rip them back out again. Vyper, your idea isn't too far off from mine really. Its not 100% perfect, but it is plausible.

ahhhhh yes....them lil submarines

There was a history channel or discovery channel program about the 3 or 4 that were at Pearl Harbour on Dec 7. Very interesting.

Also there were the Kaiten....also not modeled....hehehehe...thought if they were included I am sure the Allied Fanboys would screen that the Jap Fanboys were getting some 'super' weapon....even though the only damn thing they sunk was some oil tanker at Ulithi

Hehe. Well, just because that that is all they did IRL, that does not mean that that is all they will do in game. Especially if the combat modeling they use is, well, not historically accurate. There are some complaints about air to air combat in WiTP being wonky, and the early versions of ASW combat was somewhat eyebrow raising...

For you blimp nuts

Post by Tankerace »

Now first off, this is not a dfinate "You will see blimps in WPO" post, so don't start asking when. But the beta team is now doing a test to see if it truly would be practical and possible to accurately model blimps in the game. Now this will be an Allied playtoy, specifically American. No British bases in the Far East (that I have found) could handle airships, and Japan never fully embraced the LTA concept. This leaves only the Americans. IF, (and I mean IF) it proves viable, we will model 4 Blimp types, the B, C, D, and J type Non Rigid Blimps.

As of now there is no timeframe is to when (or if) they will be in game, because this is something we will have to test thoroughly. Just thought you guys would love an update.

And before you ask, here is a screenshot.

So very righteous !![8D]
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

In WITP I introuduce 4 Macon class Airships as coastal Prtrol units off the US and Panama
Canal area BUT I brought them in as unsinkable CV's with 4 recon sub spotters on board
worked well (think about it its all in the mind anyhow)

Well, for a commercial product Im not fond of that solution, namely as they can be shot at with 16" guns and such.

Also, Akron and Macon were 1930's products. Shenandoah and Los ANgeles were the only two Rigid LTAs used in the USN in the 1920s. (And they didn't carry planes).

Basically recon, but mainly in spotting and/or sub spotting and sinking.

blimps/deribles were historically utterly useless at sub sinking, they did a great job at keeping them away from convoys and aptrol areas.. thats about it

Heh... During the current testing round, I actually managed to drop a bomb on a Japanese sub from a blimp ONCE. Couldn't repeat it, no matter how many turns I ran.[:D]
