Calling for help with Dutch ship art

Post by Big B »

I could use some help if anyone can find a Line Drawing of the Dutch light cruiser class for Sumatra and Java as they appeared circa 1940 (after their late 1930s rebuild).

If anyone can find such a drawing - please post it, or a website where it may be found.

Thanks in advance -

I would reccomend http://www.netherlandsnavy.nl/ . I could not find a line drawing of the class on the site, but the forums are usually pretty good - you should be able to get some help there [:)]

I have found a line drwing dated 1935 BUT after looking at serveral sites I think the date is wrong as in this drawing the high mast have been removed as per refit 1937

1937 The Java is modernized at the Naval Dockyard in Den Helder, Holland. The modifications include adding an AA-battery of 4 double Bofors 40 mm-guns, replacing the fire control system with a new Hazemeyer set and shortening the masts.
January 3 1938 Java is commissioned with her new "look". She was sent to Gibraltar Strait to escort Dutch ships shortly after.
May 4 1938 Java leaves for the Dutch Indies via Suez.

Cruisers should have a "clipper bow", if only out of principle!

Remarkably ugly ship for WW2 standards, but still nicer than De Ruyter [:D]

Here is the photo of the scale model of Java, I don't think you need this level of detail for picture that is going to be like 80x30 pixels but here goes:

detail. Note there are no catapults, float planes are lowered and raised using hoists but they take off from the sea using their own power.

I remember playing a naval board game back from like the 70s that covered WWII in the pacific. Forget the name of it.

Not really knowing much about history then I was surprised to find those Dutch Cruisers in the game and I remember liking their unusual appearance. To me the art work that came with this game misses capturing their real life appearance.
