It's been a while, but today we found another US submarine, 120 miles NE of Vigan. The S-17 attempted an approach on one of my convoys, but was detected by the destroyer Kaki, and driven under with a barrage of depth charges. At least two hits or close misses were heard, but a sinking could not be confirmed.

It is far from sunk[;)]

As the first month of the war draws to a close, IJA troops landed on Batan Island in order to deny its use as a base to the enemy. The enemy support unit stationed there surrendered with nary a fight.

The second month of the war begins with making the reacquaintance of an old enemy. The previously damaged French cruiser Waldeck-Rousseau was found 60 miles east of Singapore, limping along to the west, obviously attempting to reach the city's shipyards. One of our submarines made not one, but TWO approaches on her, each time hitting her with one torpedo. It is perhaps fitting that the attack was made by Imperial submarine O-3, formerly the German U-Boat U-55.

Elsewhere, a straggler from the American ambush at Wake a few days ago, the Nichiryu Maru, has sunk some 120 miles east of Saipan.

In the Philippines, Imperial reinforcements continue to pour into the battlezones of Luzon and Mindanao. It won't be long now...

Most Japanese battleships were named for geography...

Anyhoo, on with the war. A new American underwater pirate appeared in the waters near our recently acquired based at Batan Island, and was promptly pounced upon by Imperial destroyers. This constant lack of ASW success is immensely frustrating...

At Manilla, our troops attacked again today, and whilst our losses were high, we managed to penetrate and destroy one of the enemy's main fortifications. Imperial Intelligence believes that our troops outnumber the foe about 2-to-1, a bit short of the desirable ratio for a succesful attack. The difference will be compensated for by the courage of our soldiers.

At Guam, another bombardment crashed into the American positions on the island, this time illiciting no response from enemy coastal defences. Cowering in their rat holes, no doubt...

Imperial Rikusentai today planted our flag on the Island of Jolo.

On Guam, Army troops found surprisingly hard resistance. Whilst ejecting the enemy from their fortifications, they've yet to secure the surrender of the American garrison. Still, with the support of the heavy guns of the Nihon Kaigun, we will shortly conquer the place.

Off Singapore, sub action continues. Apparently, the German-designed submarines of our fleet work better than our own home-grown versions. Something to ponder...

Imperial forces landed at Zamboanga, on Mindanao, today. Elsewhere on the island, at Cagayan, our ships continue to bombard the positions of the Philippino Reserve Division, awaiting the arrival of Army troops to storm the city.

The battle of Guam reached its expected end today. One oddity was the appearance, around noon, of a trio of American airplanes, who attempted an unsuccesful attack on our troops on the island. When the American fliers returned to their aerodrome, they found it overrun by Imperial forces. The attached photograph was found in one of the barracks at the field.
