Jan 27. Akagi and Kaga groups didnt fly again. No clue why.

Troops unload at Bankha and Medan on Sumatra.

Ise group bombards Noumea and 56th bde takes the base just as the 2nd div finally moves in. 11:1 attack, 12 Japs lost for 2421 allied troops.

A Dutch K boat attacks one of my MSW groups to no effect south of Singapore.

AVD Caso attacks I-21 east of Palmarya to no effect.

Blens raid Mandalay to no effect.

350 Claudes and Nates have been raiding Sinkeep Is from Singapore for a few days now. Nice pratice range.

Sorong falls on NG.

An attacking force of 56502 troops and 378 guns hits Jap defenders of 91573 troops, 1109 guns, 21 vehicles at Yenen again today at 0:1. 410 Japs lost to 3350 Chinese.

12 aircraft lost today. 5 Sallys op losses and flak at Manila.

Jan 28. Continued landings at Medan on the NE coast of Sumatra. 91st Nav Gd takes Bankha with a 10:1 that causes light casulties to both sides and drives the Dutch out into the jungle to the west where they will starve to death and all facilities captured intact. An attack by the 81st Nav Gd at Kulua isnt as successful at 1:1 odds but again, light losses on both sides.

Blens raid Mandalay for no effect.

Claudes/Nates raid Sinkeep (training).

An allied transport group travelling from India to Oz was perfectly ambushed today at 2,47 (west edge just north of the northern tip of Java). The TF was sighted a week or more ago by subs patrolling near Ceylon and was shadowed while TF 3 (Taiyo group) left from invasion covering duty at Java to spring the ambush. At a range of 60 miles several attacks were launched using all available planes (including Zeros and Alfs carrying bombs). 13 different ships were hit, sinking 3. Attacks will continue tomorrow.

An ASW group was bombed by Kates at extreme range from Kaga group NE of Pago-Pago. 1 DD was hit 11 times and sank. 1 other DD escaped damage. Kaga group also launched 16 VF, 7 VA, and 35 VT at a TF at Pago-Pago protected by 7 F4F fighters of VMF 211. 1 Zero and 1 Kate was lost to 2 F4Fs. The entire TF of 1 DD and 4 AKs was sunk.

Akagi group continues to not want to launch (air fuel is good, pilots and morale is good, no idea why they wont strike).

Edit: Oh, fires and flooding are contained on the Soryu, she can still maintain fleet speed and so remains with the TF.

Landings at Lingayen. Vigan is attacked by the 23rd Mxd bde at 1:1 lowering forts to 1. Allies attack 14th Army at Clark at 7:1, putting them back into Bataan again. I tire of these annoying attacks in PI. All non-committed ground troops (33rd div, 21st bde, 35th bde, and the Panzer Corps) is enroute to PI.

Jan 29. Landings continue at Medan on Sumatra. Kuala falls to the 81st Nav Gd. 41 Japs to 1952 Dutch.

Light damage to Manila by Sallys. Landings at Vigan. A few squads that hadnt been completely unloaded the other day remained at Lingayen and were shock attacked at 384:1 and scampered back to San Marcelino. A carrier bombs Vigan as it passes by to the north.

Blens over Mandalay to no effect.

Kaga group sank an AK north of Suva. 2 CA, 1 CL, and 2 DD sank 2 Jap AKs south of Tarawa.

SS Tuna attacks and misses a Jap AK north of Truk

Several more strikes and 16 more AKs hit on the west edge. Several sinkings. I expected him to turn back north and run to the safety of Ceylon and the Brit carriers, but he is continuing south. So much the better [:)]

10 total aircraft lost today. 3 Sallys to flak )7 of the 10 were to flak, actually).

Jan 30. Elements of the 2nd div landed at Norfolk Is (SW of Noumea). 864 troops shock attacked at 7:1 eliminating the enemy base force there (1418 troops, 6 guns and 4 aircraft captured). The aircraft were Demons, Falcons, and Catalina Is. Seems odd he would have Dutch aircraft deployed here. Makes more sense that this was a staging base. But the fact that they were Dutch units tells me he is staging them east! Going to have to have a sub do a drive-by on Canton and Suva. He has 6 ground units and VMF 211 on Pago-Pago. Could be he is building up in this area. Midway is still weak, only 4 units and 1 VMF (consistantly 6 F4Fs on CAP at Midway).

Troops unloading at Lingayen. Elements of 14 Army move into Clark (only to be booted out again next turn Im sure, but they are keeping him from moving).

Troops unloading at Medan.

Airstrike at Sinkeep is over-strength (100+ Claudes and 335 Nates). Will have to reduce aircraft strength at Singapore (house rule). An ASW group of 6 MSWs attacks KXV 120 miles SE of Sinkeep for no effect.

Sallys do moderate damage at Manila today.

Blens raid Mandalay to no effect. His strikes are down to 5 bombers. Morale is low because of contantly flying Im guessing. Jap attack at Vigan at 1:1. Forts reduced to 0. 66 allied casulties to 26 Japs.

Edit: rain over the Taiyo today. No launches.

12 aircraft destroyed today. 4 Cat Is lead the list.

SITREP: (Jan 31, 1942)

Image

Since he seems to be in the SE Pacific in force (I doubt he would commit 2 CAs so far from his air cover knowing the Kaga and company was that close just to kill 2 AKs unless he intended to draw me into a trap). I intend to join the Akagi and Kaga groups and do some scouting between Suva and Pearl and see what I can find. I only have 1 scout sub in that area right now (in Palmarya area). He still only has 4 ground units and 1 VMF at Midway (6 F4Fs on CAP there for weeks now), but a sudden increase from 1 to 6 units on Pago-Pago, and now the discovery of Dutch air units east of Oz. Kaga-Akagi will cover the 2nd div/56th bde occupation of the 3 island groups NE of New Calidonia before scouting. I have base forces, Emilys, and oilers in the area so it shouldnt take long to clear these out. My intent here is to blind him. To keep him out of scouting range of the Solomons and Gilberts.

I really dont understand the logic of Moving the Dutch into this area however (lines in yellow; dashed lines suspected movements). Demons, ok. 7 hex range, and not bad early war fighters. But the Cat Is and the Falcons I really dont understand. Cat I has a range of only 10 hexes (as compaired to PBY 12 and Coranados 15), and the Falcons range is only 7 hexes which makes it near useless as a recon aircraft anywhere outside CBI. Only logical conclusion is he is putting them all on the same base (Pago-Pago perhaps?) as a ring of search aircraft. I actually do this also with Emilys, Dinahs, and Jakes.

I may have to delay my Phase III operations and clear these units out. Reduction of Soerabaja begins tomorrow. Slicing and dicing of the PI begins in earnest in a few days. Will have to see how long these operations take. If I have time (I want to start Phase III before March 15) I will ship a few divs over here and cause some damage.

Jan 31. More landings at Medan.

Mutsu group (Ise headed for home) engages 2 PTs at Efate. PT 47 is sunk for DD Ariake. Not exactly a fair trade.

KXV sub at 24, 54 torpedos and sinks a MSW that was hunting it. No attacks on the enemy sub.

Taiyo was under clouds in the AM, but in the afternoon the sun broke and 4 AKs are hit. 2 sink.

Soerabaja was attacked at 0:1 today. And so begins the bloody seige.

Artillery fire is exchanged at Vigan and as predicted, the SNLF unit in Clark was thrown back.

Made an interesting observation today I will comment on in a few days.

Landings at Vigan. He has withdrawn from the base. An attack tomorrow will secure it.

12 Hudsons attacked the CL Jintsu at Rangoon, putting 1 hit on her.

A few days ago I said I noticed something. What I noticed was the port symbol went away from Brisbane. This ment the Colorado had left harbor. Akagi group immedately turned around and subs from Sydney area came north. I found her today at 45, 120 and launched 20 VF, 39 VA, and 59 VT. 5 bombs and 8 torps put her down. 3 aircraft were damaged in the attack. Akagi group is retiring.

Exchange of gunfire at Soerabaja.

Feb 12. 42 Sallys raid Chungking at night. Level 40 fire started. Day air attack by 6 Sallys and 55 Oscars didnt fare well against his 43 Hurricanes. 39 Oscars and 2 Sallys to 8 Allied fighters destroyed.

24,000 allies attack 34,000 Japanese (mainly the newly arrived 33rd div) at Clark field at 0:1. 20,000 allies attack 7,000 defenders near Naga at 2:1 driving them back into Naga. A Jap bde is moving up from Legaspi to reinfore Naga.

OBSERVATIONS
He seems to want to engage my air forces in China where I have no intention of committing them (probably because he has nothing else to do with them right now), so I will do constant harrassment night attacks on Chungking airfield and day attacks on other targets in China. With any luck, I will catch his airforces out of position at the critical moment. It will take him several days to move Hurricanes from Chunking to Columbo. China is a non-issue to me, but I am tempted to wear down the Brit airforce. The Brits have a critical shortage of pilots and if I can wear them down, India will be extremely vunerable. My only intent right now in China is to deny him supplies so he cant conduct a serious air war in '44 and I have plenty of time to do that. If I can secure the communist north or maybe even grab Chunking, that is a plus. But my air forces have better things to do than waste away here. Training bombing missions continue on Sinkeep and in New Guinea. I have a holding force on the way toward Chunking now.

Base building continues in Burma and Malaya. All my combat engineer regts are committed between Java, Luzon, and northern Burma at the moment, so progress is slow. Am shipping in engineer units from Korea to help.

1 more division moves into Clark tomorrow, and probably another the day after. A suicide charge by 3 SNLF landing forces is being considered at Manila to keep the units in Clark and the Naga side from retreating back into Manila and combined with a 5 regiment para assult may be enough to secure Manila since his combat forces seem to be outside the city. Para forces are ready right now in Cam Rahn Bay and the SNLFs have started loading at Bataan.

There is an old adage that says: He who defends everything, defends nothing. He is very spread out in China. I have forces at all his possible major assult points capible of holding him. Meanwhile my assult force is safely in the rear area prepping for his most vunerable point.

My opponent is very a impatient person. I am facing Adm Halsey and will use this against him. I should be able to bait him into an ill concieved attack with his carrier forces early on. Probably in April. Possibly in March. The stage is still being set here. The bulk of my Betty and Zero force is 80+ experience (2 Zero and 1 Betty is 90+) and sitting in the SE pacific waiting. I train my navy fighter pilots in Claudes in the backwater areas. Army planes I dont worry about as much. Bombers are plentiful and fighters are worthless until August or Sept.

DAMAGE UPDATE
Fusu group has been completely repaired and is on its way back to its operational area. It took 11 days to repair the 10 system damage the Fuso accumulated between being at sea and the torp she took back in early Dec. Ise group is headed back for repairs now along with Soryu. Soryu is at 20% sys, and will need probably a month in the yard. This should be good timing, as that is just about all the time needed for Phase III operations to begin, so I should be at full strength for this. Part of Akagi group headed back as well for minor repairs, the rest merging with Kaga. 2 of my scout subs are damaged and on their way home, with their replacements not yet on station so I am partially blind, but not in a critical area. 2 new Mavis groups arrived today, and are being sent to the New Calidonia area and a Glen boat is being sent to southern New Zealand. This should give me the ability to see everything headed for Australia. I get several more Glen boats in the next few days and most of them will be sent to the Indian Ocean. 2 are going to be sent to replace their damaged counterparts in the south Pac.

Feb 13. Night raid on Chungking by 47 Sallys. Intercepted by 6 Blen IFs. 1 Sally lost to flak, 1 Blen shot down, 3 aircraft destroyed on the ground.

Several small raids on Jap ground troops in northern Burma.

A Jap division crossed the river west of Ichang into a Chinese corps forcing a 0:1 shock attack. 900 Jap casulties reported, but seems to be mainly disruption. Division is still at 100% strength.

Allies withdrew to Manila from the Naga road. 7 units still in Clark.
