PzB vs Wobbly - Clash of Steel

Been doing some 'house cleaning' and ordered coastal defence units from Kwajalein,
Truk and other fronltine bases to the Marianas and Bonin islands. Want to keep these valuable units
away from enemy LBA. They will cause lots of damage to enemy invasion fleets.

Several smaller LCUs have been moved to perimeter bases stretching from Java to the Marshalls.
Not a single base in New Guinea without military presence - no freebies Andy!

In Hong Kong the 2nd Armoured Division has been released for the Philippines and is being loaded
onto transports. Need another 1400 preparation points to release the last units slated for transfer.
These include: 1 engineer regiment, 1 AA regiment, 1 arty brigade, 1 SNLF unit and 2 tank regiments.

Andy knows about my plans but that can also work in my favor! If he thinks the islands in the Marianas
are too heavily defended he may avoid them - nothing could suit me better. These are the single most
important bases in the defensive perimeter. So my policy is not to remove units from these bases, but to
add more...come hell and high water! [;)]

An invasion through the Philippines would be..interesting and the myriad of bases there will be difficult to
subdue - especially if the Combined Fleet including the KB is intact and kamikazes active.

While Andy needs time to prepare time is also on my side. The more days that pass the more aircraft and
potent land combat units we will receive.

Here is a picture of Truk's fighter defenses! Another 36 Tojos and 36 Tonys and even
more trained Zekes will be added over the next couple of weeks.

The enemy tankers that were shot up near Broome some time ago have been sinking their way east towards
Perth. Think the last went down yesterday [;)] Lately several small transport tf's have been spotted near Darwin.
Guess Andy needs fuel and supplies. So I decided to send the Tokyo Express back in! 2 light cruisers and 6 destroyers
staged via Lautern undetected!

The battle started well and 2 transports, 1 tanker, 1 minesweeper + 3 PT boats were sunk. The little bugs got their
revenge this time though - guess I've been too luck thus far. A series of torpedoes slams into 3 of my dd's and 1 sink
immediately. Another one is finished of by enemy LBA while the third struggles on.

So the mission was accomplished although at a high price...

Enemy invasion force spotted!

An enemy invasion force? has been spotted - we assume it's heading for Kavieng!
A series of defensive measures have been taken, the place got 1000 mines, 9 forts and several
large SNLF units as well as several base force units. Should be in for a few interesting turns...

As expected the invasion force headed for Kavieng! It didn't reach the base though, but stopped
1 hex short to the east. Only a smaller number of bombers were ordered to intercept in waves from the
different bases in the region to avoid crippling losses (I expected a heavy CAP - that didn't materialize!).

Situation map: Kavieng

The KB is only 2-3 days full steam away from Truk - it will try to hurt the enemy when he retreats from Kavieng [:D]
For now the following defensive counter-attack measures have been taken:

1. The 23 engineer regiment and 2 artillery battalions (75 & 150mm) have been airlifted to Kavieng.
2. Parts of the Army's 2nd division will be airlifted to Kavieng today.
3. A battlegroup under V.Adm Yamamoto steamed out of Truk yesterday. It consists of the super-battleship Musashi, 3 heavy cruisers and 9 destroyers.
It will hit the enemy as he moves into Kavieng tomorrow.
4. A small number of naval bombers will attempt to intercept the enemy ships

Kavieng itself is a size 3 port and size 4 airfield with 9 forts and 1040 mines. The base is still in supply.
There are 20k troops on the island with a combined assault value of 300. These troops include:
2 large Naval Guard units
1 SNLF unit
1 Engineer regiment
2 Artillery battalions
3 Base force units
+ a variety of remnants

We should see some vicious combat tomorrow! I hope that Yamamoto's battlegroup will disrupt the Allied surface group and allow our artillery units
to rip the invasion barges to pieces.

Forgot to mention that a Glen scouted Pearl Harbour yesterday! It was shot down but some 300 Hellcats were reported...
The US carriers are in place so the invasion of Kavieng won't have their support!

You seem to have a huge airlift capacity at Truk . how much is there in the way of transports ?

I say squish the invasion!
Is there any way of stopping overwhelming numbers of marines landing on Kavieng? You said it yourself, there was little opposition in the air. That may change, but if you could put more surface fleets in action over the next few days and then add KB...Well, ok that might not stop the invasion, maybe you should just concentrate on inflicting as much damage as you can.
Q: do you have any A6M2 squadrons left?
If so, this could the scenario for their finest hour. And the last. Truk is 8 hexes away from Kavieng, just within A6M2s normal range. They wouldn't have to do much damage or even survive, but allow Bettys to come through the CAP and smash the capital ships in the invasion fleet. That would clear the path for your SC TFs to sweep the invasion TFs or force the enemy to retreat at which point the KB rolls into action. Voila[:)]
BTW, I think the Oscars can double for A6M2s.

It was very reasuring to find the Hellcats at PH Admiral Laurent! The poor little fella in the Glen will not be forgotten [;)]

Got some 240 transports at Truk Rob - and they can all reach Kavieng! Time for a little payback..not forgotten
how Ken airlifted 1 division in a few days 6 months ago.

Yeah, it's tempting Honda...but there are no enemy troops in Kavieng yet [&:] Andy told me he had set a trap for me.
Must admit that this was one of the most confusing turn ever! Enemy ships and TFs are scattered all around Kavieng
and the new battleship Massachusetts is among them.

At Kavieng some 30 odd PT boats met Admiral Yamamoto's battlegroup! The little buggers managed to sink a destroyer
but 12 of their numbers were sent straight to he11 [&o] Enemy CAP was almost non-existent - I guess Andy tried to manouver
with his massed invasion TFs and they got dispersed. So I'm going to sit back and see what happends! The Musashi will
remain on station and strike whenever and werever Andy decides to land.

I have ordered all my naval and army bombers in the area to prepare a massive strike - it will be very difficult for Andy to protect all his
loose hens now! I'm using mostly Oscars as escorts - the remaining A6M2s are on my carriers or training in China. Think the Oscars
can do the job. In a few days the KB will arrive on the scene and poor Andy if he tries another 'fancy manouver'!

Got some 240 transports at Truk Rob - and they can all reach Kavieng! Time for a little payback..not forgotten how Ken airlifted 1 division in a few days 6 months ago.

Did Paulus had those planes, we would be chating german on this forums whether those Focke-Wulfs and Messerschmidts were achieving 4:1 or 6:1 ratios against inferior Hellcats and Corsairs. [;)]




I dont understand why is Andy risking another battleship [&:]. He is lacking big surface combat ships and he sends BB close to your bases full of bombers??? On the other hands he has relatively big number of CVs (and will receive much more in near future) and they are sitting in PH instead of covering his ships? Is he so creepy or tricky? Forgot to mention that a Glen scouted Pearl Harbour yesterday! It was shot down but some 300 Hellcats were reported...
The US carriers are in place so the invasion of Kavieng won't have their support!

That must have been a great loss. That hero was able to count 300 Hellcats and get off a message before he was shot down.[X(][:D]

If I deployed all my ac they would be lost in a matter of weeks.

Not ONE of my bombers get through - some 50 Sallys, 50 Oscars, 13 Betties and 25 transports
are gunned down by the uber LR CAP today. Air to air losses amounted to something like 161 to 5 [&o][&o]
The navy will have to win the war for us....

The only good thing was that I didn't loose any 'valuable' planes. Most of the Betties were sensible enough to stay
home today.

Ground Combat

The better parts of a Marine Division, parts of the Americal div, SeaBees and tank units are among the LCUs landed at Kavieng today. Will they break the forts

Interesting, super CAP vs super Bombardment. I guess you will have to make do with 2 wrongs making a kind of right for now. For your sake John, I hope that the pluses and minuses for both sides even out mostly so it is a fairly even fight overall. I did give Andy Mac some pointers on getting a lot of troops landed in a single phase. It is the only way to combat your superority in surface fleets. I'm sure that the mine he hit was one I dropped in January, I would have thought it would have disappeared by now.

Counter strike at Kavieng

Today the mighty KB returned to Truk and after refuelling it will sortie again!

The idea: Andy has moved a bit fast me thinks. He's still low on surface combat ships and his bombers must
have burned a lot of supplies over the last week or so. Fatigue must also be setting in.

The plan: We still got a vastly superior navy and a large transport fleet. Andy will have to bring in more troops
and supplies to capture Kavieng. Powerful surface combat and bombardment TFs should be able to strike Kavieng
at will - especially when supported by the KBs 800 ac.

So here is what we're going to do:
1. Sail the KB to the hex marked in black on the map below. This will be out of range of pesky T-bolts and F16..Corsairs.
Enemy ships moving towards Kavieng will face attacks from both surface ships and aircraft.
2. 9 transport TFs consisting of 6-9 1500 size APs and 3-4 escorts are loading supplies and 2 crack divisions at Truk. These troops
will be enough to prevent Andy from capturing Kavieng - and perhaps manage to drive them into the sea after a while. While I can't
hit the enemy troops with my ac I still got an awful lot of big gun platforms sailing around!

By dragging Andy into a prolonged conflict he will either have to use his fleet to save his men. If he does he will face superior odds!
If he doesn't his troops will be marooned and eventually destroyed. Kavieng is actually one island too far if you ask me...

Got only 3 subs at Truk Bbbf! They're used in a mine laying role but can also intercept enemy
shipping. Seems like Andy has moved his larger ships out of the area!

Only smaller enemy tf's left in the area and no further ground attacks. Weather has turned foul -
perfect for landing reinforcements!

Several of the KB carriers have been spotted, but no attacks thus far - in neither direction.
