Coal vs. Oil

Post by Fallschirmjager »

Which ships in this game burn coal and which burn oil?

I know at Jutland the British had only two BB that were oil powered and the Germans had none.
What was the case in the early 20s?

I know subs are all oil fueled but not sure what else is.

Be nice if we could create a list of each and then compare them in game.

Along the same lines it would be nice to list each ship in terms of which had a single fire control station in the conning tower and which still used the method of a gunnery officer in each turret.
Does the former get a accuracy bonus?

That would be really cool if it did (and realistic since in controlled tests the chances of a hit were 8 times greater)

In game, there is no disticntion between fuel and coal ships.

However, Coal ships have their total fuel complement multiplied by 1.75 to represent the bulkyness of coal, and that it takes more coal than oil to move a ship.

For example, If a ship carries 2,000 tons of fuel, in game if it is an oil ship its fuel is 2000, but if it is coal it is 3500-3750. This is both to represent bulky coal, and to make it less efficient to refuel at sea (it could be done with coal, but it was much more time consuming than with oil).

Also, if you notice that after an upgrade a ship needs less fuel, or its range has been dramatically improved, then it has been converted to coal firing.

As to which ships in game... I can't list them all. I would say in the early part of the game 75% of warships use coal, but by the end of the game its about 45% coal, 45% oil, and 10% coal and/or oil (some ships could or did use both).

Any comment on the firing control systems?

No way to model it in game exactly, however I have modeled it in the case of British ships (with the...ugg...Dreyer table) having a generally low experience (compared to the others), and their guns being made purposefully less accurate.

I would like to see it, but I doubt it would happen. Would need a serious rewrite of the engine.
