Newbie and a few questions regarding movement and transports

Post by mashkis »

I just got this game of this type and going through the manual but I am confused on a few items.

When considering movement of the ships, do you look at the endurance or fuel? Also, is it best to keep the same types of ships that have similar endurances together in one TF or it is okay to mix the low and high endurance ships?

On page 78 of the manual. I am confused on how to read the chart and capacity and supply points. It says ..."an AK is much more adept at carrying infantry squads than an AP". So, does this mean that the higher the number under the different resources the better it is match between the type of ship and supply or the lower the number is better? If AP is a troop transport why is the AK better to carry infantry?

thanks.

As for your first question, that really depends on the mission and how far you want to send them. Smaller ships, like destroyers, can "leech" fuel from larger ones.

AK's are more adept at carrying infantry from friendly base to friendly base, but if you use them for amphibious assault, your troops will take more casualties when landing and the ships will take longer to unload. That's where AP's come in.

I always look at the endurance. The fuel in the upper left corner of the TF screen is an abstract number (I think) showing how much fuel the TF has left. The endurance is a more accurate number. Someone who knows the engine better can answer this.

I would advise always keeping ships with similar speed and endurance together. Unless it is a short distance that they need to travel.

I always use AP to carry troops if I can help it. The load cost is much less to load troops in an AP than an AK. Which means to load the same Land Combat Unit (LCU) that you need more AK ships than AP.

I'm not sure I understand the other part of your question.

AKs are good at carrying infantry, but that is all. They are too cramped to carry guns and sophisticated equipment. In WPO, with the bulky infantry units, use an AP. For small light infantry, use an AK.

thanks all.

Another quick question. On page 70-72 there are list of movement descriptions but I was not able to find those commands on the TF screen. How can I issue these types of commands? For example, arrive at night, avoid enemy carriers, sweep minefield, initiate submarine combat, react to enemy carrier, etc...

Sorry for the dumb questions.

You can influence TF bahaviour by it's Type (ex. Air Combat, Tranpost, Sub patrol, etc), Retirement Settings (Patrol/Do not retire, Retirement allowed), Speed (Cruise, Mission, Full) and Reaction Range (works for Surface Combat and Air Combat TF's).Different combinations give different result. [:)]

In WITP there is an advanced tutorial chapter which describing how Bombardment TF behaves using different types of speed settings. I think this kind of things should be added to WPO tutorials as well.

thanks. It would be great if there were step-by-step descriptions for doing different tasks in the manual.

That seems to go against how its done in WITP, where you need an AK to carry the Heavy Equipt which might get left if use an AP..

I've always considered AP's as troop ships with AK's as carrying the specialized troops and the equiptment best.

So I'll fill out an TF with enough AP's plus a bit extra to load the troops themselves and add in an AK or 2 for the supplies and the equiptment

Btw for using ships where entering combat its simple to remember this:

Amphib Assault mission=AP
Transport Mission= AK
