Kamikazes

Does the game offer any type of kamikaze unit? My game manual doesn't mention them.

There are no kamikaze units in the standard game. Some users have modified the game data files to include new unit types, so it might be possible to create a modified scenario with Kamikaze units (this may have been done already, I just don't recall whether I've seen them in a mod yet).
All understanding comes after the fact.

I have experimented with a Kamikaze unit and it is relatively easy to do. The Japanese TAC air is very similar in spec to their bomber so the unit serves little purpose in gameplay. This means you can mod it to turn it into a cheap one shot air unit with reasonable sea attack but poor other attributes. The problem with this is that it still takes pop points to build them en masse. There are two alternatives either you equip Japan with them at the start of the scenario and base them on islands with range 0 - they can still therefore attack adjacent sea areas but cannot fly off to fight the Chinese, or you increase the Japanese population by giving islands etc pop points so the Japanese can build them when needed.

The sort of approach you use will depend on whether you expect a human or the AI to play the Japanese. If it is the AI you have to stop it from moving Kamikaze's to China where they would be pretty useless, if it is a human you do not want them to exploit the resourses (e.g. extra population) for other purposes.

Unfortunately the mod I developed had loads of other changes (e.g. German tanks get two shots to match their historic range advantage) but something amongst them causes some systems (not mine) to loop so I cannot publish it but I am happy to e-mail it to anyone who wants to try it. It is designed to beef up the Axis AI to be really challenging and gives them various other "super weapons" eg V2's.

Regards

Mike
