RE: The War In Summary Up till Now
27th February, 1943
Just going to talk about the 2nd Battle of Bali now.
An error on my part sent the slow US BBs to Macassar for a daylight bombardment. Oops! KB was 5 hexes away and launched waves of attacks, fortunately their long range nerf bombs did only superficial damage, so i suppose thats actually a sort of good thing - up their fatigue, lower their ammo, for no benefit to them.
Simon moved the KB closer to Waingapu, I thought he'd be pulling out, apparently not. Waves of Beaufighters and Mitchells from Waingapu and heavies from Koepang sallied forth.
I read Guy Gibsons book "Enemy Coast Ahead" a while back, and one thing I do remember him saying in that book was that the Beaufighter was a piece of ****, relegated to being a night fighter because thats all it was good for, and that the only aircraft he liked least was the Manchester.
I'm inclined to agree with him now = out of about 60 Beaufighter sorties which penetrated CAP, my experience 70, low fatigue, well escorted Beaufighters managed to dive bomb not a single target.
Even the Mitchells did better than that.
No. Here the real stars go to the 4 engine bombers, one squadron of which managed to plaster Akagi with 1000lb bombs. Marvellous. The magic words 'heavy damage' and all. [:D]

RE: The War In Summary Up till Now
changing your mind about US 2E bombers yet ? [:D]. personally i like them especailly the B varient with lots of guns on board.
The 4E attack on the CV's .. good news for you but i dont like using them so low, more realistic results if you use them above 11k , i.e occacional hit, not carpet bombing a TF at sea. Well thats my opinion and im an allied player too [;)]
V Lucky with the slow BB's too .. bet hes wishing he was 1 hex closer would have been a very differant result. ..All in all a very good turn .. congrats

Afraid not, far as I can tell they are frickin' useless for all but tickling airfields. [:D]
I use them because I have no choice.

I tend to always use bombers at 6000 feet, for just about everything. At high level they just do nothing.
"nothing" being defined as "less than 100 runway hits". I know you suffer more but theres no point just scratching at a target. Usually when I commit I want the target gone, and if that means losing a few more bombers to do it, thats fair enough.
I take my lessons from Arthur "Butcher" Harris when it comes to minimising casualties. [:D]
And he has those evil Betties, so I take what I can get...
V Lucky with the slow BB's too .. bet hes wishing he was 1 hex closer would have been a very differant result. ..All in all a very good turn .. congrats
Yeah. All luck and no judgment, but again, I'll take what I can get!
RE: The War In Summary Up till Now
Another turn grinds on.
Heavy casualties in my troops unloading at Port Moresby despite months of port bombing. A third of the division typically is lost just on the beach! and the AKs are flaming wrecks. But we persist.
I'm looking gloomily at the DEI now. Macassar is clearly the key to further advances, I should have struck there, not at Bali. But now his carriers are lurking in the Macassar Strait, just waiting for me to reinforce the division there.
I did toy with the idea of aborting the operation and fast transporting them out. But. Not yet. Plan B has been activated.
Victorious and Illustrious have left Colombo with a 15 ship air combat TF, when they arrive I'll have six carriers in theatre again. He's had Akagi knocked out of action and the odd stray nerf bomb land on a Jap carrier deck, and most importantly of all the Lightnings have ripped up the Japanese fighters.
The US Division will have to cling on at Macassar for some time, but we're coming boys! Supply at least isnt a problem, I can air transport and barge supply over easily. Macassar is pretty exposed.

RE: The War In Summary Up till Now
8th March, 1943
Had quite an interesting turn today, so a report on it is due.
BURMA/INDIA
Things are getting into position. 3 armoured units at Akyab + 2 ART are battling over the hills now. When they reach 20 miles progress I'll begin shunting units from Calcutta to Ledo ready to be airdropped. Akyab has 100,000 supply, hopefully after the armour has forged a path the presence of SEAC HQ will suck supply over the hills to forces besieging Mandalay.
Aside from that my bombers have been continuing to smite, mostly on ground attack at Mandalay actually, but the occasional airfield or city attack as well.
DEI
Here is the interesting stuff.
My subs in the Java Sea detected KB returning to Singer some time ago - several subs were damaged by Kates or Vals and had to pull back but I still got >6 on station in the Java Sea.
So! I continued my operation to reinforce Macassar.
He decided to send a surface combat TF to disrupt my forces there. I saw it coming yesterday, and I could have sent my three old Pearl veteran BBs over to disrupt, but instead I aborted the landing and moved the convoy + BBs 2 hexes away from Macassar, sidestepping him.
What he apparently didn't realise is that my four US carriers were escorting that convoy. I left some barges at Macassar for him to toy with, but come sunup my CVs let rip. Just as well I moved my BBs as Yamato was present.
Unfortunately for him bad weather meant no morning strike, but the afternoon strike was pretty good.
Tomorrow the operation to resupply Macassar will continue. My CVs will loiter and try to snag him again. I'm going for Macassar, may be some surface combat if he's feeling ballsy but to be honest i doubt it, I think he'll be running like hell. LBA will be LRCAPPing the battleships and convoy, the carriers are going to split off from my mass of warships and go hunting rather than get too close to the shore.
Forecast is cloudy.
SOPAC
Torokina has fallen, and has now been reinforced with 1 Seabee unit and 3/4 of an EAB. Supply is plentiful and airfield building is picking up speed. 7 APDs at Vella Lavella are working on shipping over more engineers. The whole operation is being covered by 3 squadrons of Corsairs, so I'm fairly happy about the risk quotient involved here.
My cruiser force is loitering at Vella Lavella just in case he sends a surface TF over to investigate - I have no confidence in Allied LBA's ability to control the seas. Mitchells? Fah. And Avengers have too short a range.
CVL Independence leaves Noumea today to rendezvous with Essex, my fleet carrier strike force in SOPAC is now up to 100 frames.
At Townsville my raggled and shot up transports are being reassembled to transport over another RCT to Port Moresby. This will bring my deployed force up to 2 divisions, 2 RCTs, facing 2/3rds of a Jap division and level 7 forts. My units at PM have sustained about 30% losses though, so its not quite as rosy as it appears.
CENTPAC
Kwajalein has been softened for a month now by 50 Forts. Pondering making my move in the Marshalls.
As the day was quite active, here is the full combat report. The Allied CV strikes are the noteworthy bit.
I consider the days combat to be quite the victory, but tomorrow, I hope to really seal that victory and see the Jap well punished.
The battles for the Dutch East Indies continue!

RE: The War In Summary Up till Now
As I thought, his battleships at Macassar ran.
But they didnt run far enough!
Haruna and Hiei are sunk. Yamato has absorbed 4 22 inch torpedoes and an ungodly number of 1000lbers. Breaks my heart. [:D]
5 Betties attacked my CVs and were all blasted out of the sky by my 80 Wildcats.
That turn must have sucked for him. Bali has been avenged.

RE: The War In Summary Up till Now
Rejoicing at Allied High Command!
BB Yamato has been confirmed as sunk.
Which means all three of the BBs he had on his little raid to Macassar got smacked.
Today I lingered for another day and bombed about four TKs as they were picking up oil on southern Borneo.
As the whole objective of this thrust at Java is to deny him his oil, surely that can only be good.
I'm now pulling back, Vals sighted in the Java Sea once more.
Also I'm going to try and contest him once more in the skies over CHina, after months of leaving him be. 100+ heavy bombers have moved to Chengtu. This is now an airfield 6 and so I hope for better results than last time. Also close to 80 spitfires and the AVG (now theres a blast from the past) will be on CAP duty so if he wants to make a fight of it, bring it on,

BURMA/INDIA
Attack is still developing, my armoured units are about a third of a way through the mountain hex now.
Three Chindit brigades have been airdropped to Myritkina, theres more coming. Lookling like we'll have about 5 divisions worth of troops hitting him in Burma, plus the three armoured units. Hopefully this is enough to put the wind up him.
CHINA
No change. WW1.
DEI
Macassar fell today! I am slightly surprised. A massive ground bombardment with every bomber I had preceded a deliberate attack and kicked him out. Wonderful news. If I can hold on to it I have a sizable bomber base right in the heart of the SRA.
Unfortunately its wrecked, and those four Jap divisions will be back, I bet.
This time, if he goes for it, it'll be a carrier battle. I have six CVs in the area now, four US, 2 Brit. And I have a lot of bombers. He has all his carriers back Akagi, possibly (got a sub torpedo a few months ago) but his carrier air has been greatly attritioned, I suspect his pilots are no longer top quality.
I've also got minelayers in position now, having learned from Bali. So hopefully an insta 2000 mine minefield will give pause for thought.
SOPAC
Still butting my head against Port Moresby. Level 7 forts, I'm not getting anywhere. 1 RCT is combat ineffective, 75 disabled squads, I'm going to pull it back for R&R I think.
Also today a transport TF fell out of the line of CVs and got lightly bombed by Betties, luckily they were flying from a small airfield (Lae) and so no torpedoes.
Torokina is mine, and being built up. Now its a level 1 airfield and has a Corsair squadron based there. APDs have been shuttling SeaBees from Vella Lavella to Torokina, it shouldnt be too long to get it up to an airfield 5. And then Rabaul is in deep ****.
Essex and Independence have met up so now I have a 120 frame carrier TF in SOPAC, along with the four CVEs. CVL Princeton is on its way as well, but its east of Pearl so not for some time yet.
CENTPAC/NORPAC
I raided Eniwetok today with my Wake Island cruiser force to see what could be scared up. Not much, is the answer.
Kwajalein still gets regularly bombed by my 50 Forts at Tarawa. Aside from that, not much to report...

RE: The War In Summary Up till Now
17th March 1943
A quick note to say that it looks like the Jap airforce has lost the plot completely over Soerabaja and Rabaul the last few days.
In SOPAC it looks like he's evacuated his SOPAC air units to Lae - which is only an airfield 2 at the moment - because of the pressure put on Rabaul. I'm going to start raiding Rabaul now with warships, really cut him off from supply.
Over Soerabaja the routine sweep with Lightnings here found 3 Zeroes. And this after two days sustained heavy bomber bombardment destroyed 150 frames on the ground. The USAF rules the skies over Soerabaja.

The war goes well
19th March, 1943
The war goes well. I think it must be all downhill for Japan from now on.
BURMA/INDIA
The mass airlift continues to Myritkina. All three Chindit brigades are over already, now we're working on the full divisions. Less than full divisions are back in India, providing defence and recuperating.
My armour is about half way through the first hex from Akyab, which is good, it'll take a while for the Dakotas to move the amount of troops I'm talking about here. I figure the assault on Japanese Burma will take place in about one and a half to two IC months, again my earlier predictions were a little optimistic.
DEI
USS Grayling torpedoed two Jap tankers off Camranh Bay today, and USS Tinosa would have bagged another but for dud torpedoes. Jap ASW off the Home Islands forced me to redeploy my submarines, so sub kills went down while they were in transit, but now they have arrived at new hunting grounds the Silent Service is getting the tonnage in again.
A Jap AK convoy is sighted in the Java Sea by submarines and Bali has a convoy including a CA docked, I'm going to try and sting him but we'll see how it goes. Presumably moving troops around and getting his act together after the invasion.
150 heavies and 50 Lightnings raided Soerabaja again, and found poor pickings, just 10 Zeroes and 5 Topsies trashed, and 212 runway hits (woo). Looks like he's giving up on Soerabaja. Looks like Singkawang is his main airforce base now, and thats some distance to the north. the USAF has done wonders here.
Very heavy Allied convoy activity between Koepang and Macassar. 100 Dakotas fly air supply missions as well. Macassar is hungry for supply as the runway is still trashed from the earlier devastation, so a major effort is being made here to top them up. So far the Jap has made no response, but he must be aware of it.
CVE Long Island is carrying 24 Corsairs destined for Macassar but is still around the Port Moresby area unfortunately. Four DMs have been busy mining Macassar as well, an MLE at Koepang speeds their work. This place isnt going to fall as easily as Bali did, I want this one for keeps.
There is some heavy Jap barge activity at Pinyang, which is one base up from Macassar. Retreating, or reinforcing, I wonder? In any case theres nothing I can do about it yet.
I have a headache with my fleet here as well, I had a lot of powerful units in the area but with the exception of my six CVs and their attendents my navy is getting bruised by all the activity, and I'm going to have to rotate out some cruisers for refit. Unfortunately, there are no reserves without stripping SOPAC too much.
The USN just isnt big enough for my plans!
SOPAC
My Solomons cruiser force raided Rabaul today, under Corsair LRCAP, and cleaned the place out. Some Jap light forces were about, MLs were the juiciest catch. But I hate mines, so a worthy little raid. CA Wichita did a damn good job, I saw a lot of 8" hitting.

It looks like thats about all he's got in SOPAC, unless Truk is a beehive. Looks like most of the IJN is at Singapore, and I've been mauling it quite badly lately, what with 3 BBs sunk this month and all.

Another Australian Bde is being sent to Port Moresby so its just a question of when.
However the units involved have been badly mauled and will be combat ineffective for some time. Americal and the 43rd US division have sustained almost 50 percent disablements.
CENTPAC
Further raiding around Eniwetok with the Kiwi Navy and CA Salt Lake City. No IJN units found. So... an invasion on the fly has been planned, with units from Pearl, which has massive reserves. The target is Majiro which seems to be ungarrisoned. Its six hexes from Kwajalein which will let me put the place under Mitchell blockade. The invasion force is pretty thin on warships, CVL Princeton is going to be available (she's on the way to SOPAC and has been diverted) but thats it. I'll be relying on the Tarawa bombers - reinforced with 48 Libs - to keep Kwajalein from interfering.
So the Allies will have a main thrust at the DEI, a somewhat lesser but still vigorous offensive in SOPAC, and now some active island grabbing with minimal forces in the Central Pacific, as well as a potential ground assault in Burma!

Great going .. !! [&o]
If you think your navy is getting batterd just imagine how he feels [;)]
Personally i think you are doing fantastically ! well done.
RE the invasion the gilberts .. nice idea by the way.. another option is to airlift in a marine para units first so the transports unload at a friendly port rather than over beaches.
gilberts can be done with no CV support at all imo . mitchells are worth thier weight in gold round here.
good luck

Thats a good idea, I moved most of my paras to Lunga looking to use them in the Solomons but their dire assault rating means they werent good enough to handle a Jap naval garrison unit. I did find them effective for suicide recon and in conjunction with fast transported marine raiders, thats an AV of 60 odd and just about enough.
I'll have to fast transport a para unit from Lunga to Tarawa, I suspect, though... a long way. Lots of sys damage.

RE: The war goes well
My feeling is that 1943 is a year when the Allies can launch offensives but not sustain naval operations. You accumulate too much sys damage if your fleet stays out all the time. So you have to launch, repair launch and repair.
Just keep the ARs near the front

BURMA/INDIA
A supply convoy was sighted at Rangoon yesterday. Can't let him resupply Burma! So surface forces were dispatched and Beaufighters moved up to Akyab.
Today - nothing. Bad weather day though, so maybe he's still there. My cruisers press on under Beaufighter LRCAP, my bombers remain ready to pounce.
We are up to about 1000 assault points at Myritkina. The total drive on Burma looks like it'll be of the order of 2500-3000 or so assault points. You reckon thats enough, guys?
DEI
Lightly bombed his convoy at Bali, today Beaufighters strafed his empty APs.
KB sighted by submarines in the Java Sea. All hell breaks loose with the order giving. All aircraft stood down to be fresh if KB approaches within range.
My carriers return to Koepang, will sortie and engage if he gets near Macassar! My slow BBs have been redirected to SOPAC to help reduce Port Moresby, but my cruisers - of which I have quite a few - sortie from Darwin, I'll have them sit six hexes from Macassar and do a full speed pounce if need be.
Its Miller time!

Fast transporting paras from Lunga to Tarawa, Dakotas are now at Tarawa. We'll go for this paradrop idea. My AKs are still 1.5 weeks out of the Marshalls so there is time.

Aussie Bde and SeaBees are loading at Townsville with CVE escort and will be headed for Port Moresby. Heavies at Townsville are resting, tomorrow, weather permitting, will be another ground attack/deliberate attack and hopefully another fort level shaved off.
4 ARs which were at Sydney doing nothing are relocating to Darwin.
In the next 150 days, I will receive

Aussie Bde and SeaBees are loading at Townsville with CVE escort and will be headed for Port Moresby. Heavies at Townsville are resting, tomorrow, weather permitting, will be another ground attack/deliberate attack and hopefully another fort level shaved off.
4 ARs which were at Sydney doing nothing are relocating to Darwin.
In the next 150 days, I will receive
2 CV
3 CVL
3 CVE
...be afraid, Japan. Be very afraid.
RE: The war goes well
...and on top of the above CV reinforcements, the two British CVs he bombed up are now in San Diego being fixed. One is down to 6 sys already, so they will be freed up, as well.
So we will have six US, four British fleet carriers roaming around, assuming he doesnt trash any more of them.

RE: The war goes well
KB draws near Bali, bit worried about that. Future carrier battle maybe. Going to be cutting it fine, my ships are thirsty, I got 56k of fuel on TKs at Koepang but its in the process of being unloaded.
I'm happy to let LBA attritt KB's CAP wall and who knows, maybe put a 500lber on a wooden deck, before I sally forth anyway. Given the abysmal performance of Beaufighters as bombers I'm going to try them as fighters instead this time. I know the Zeroes will run rings around them but there are Lightnings too, and Lightnings eat Zeroes for breakfast, they should give the Beaus a chance.
Supply in Macassar is now in the white for the first time. Airfield is almost totally fixed, port is still screwed though. Baseforce two days away from landing.
Made a hash in SOPAC, CVE Long Island got hit by a nerf bomb dropped by a Betty out of Lae. But Long Island is evidently a floating Pepsi can as it did 35 sys damage and cut her speed to 1 hex a turn. I forgot the Lightning LRCAP as she sailed through the danger zone of the PM - Aus line.
Means my 24 SWPAC Corsairs are going to arrive at Macassar that much more slowly.

RE: The war goes well
Good luck with the para drop, even a BF will probably be taken, if its empty no worries at all. Its about the only use for them i can see. I 'think' that a simultaneous para drop with landings make an atoll assult ignore the forts for that turn too, but i am not sure . someone else may be able to confirm/deny it. if true damn useful later on [:D]
Beaufighters on LR cap ?? umm .. pray that no jap fighters are about .. should be good at disuading bombers mind you.
CVE Long island is slow enough without damage .. is there a faster AK about .. maybe swop over the a/c on an island somewhere[&:]

Probably the last update for a while. Off to the parents tomorrow, so the war will have to wait until the new year.
BURMA/INDIA
Still moving over divisions, a huge force is being amassed at Myritkina. It looks like Myritkina can draw supply over from Ledo (which is plentifully supplied), so thats good. My armour at Akyab has now covered 40 miles worth of distance into the mountains. I reckon everything should come together at roughly the same time.
Moving baseforces from Chandpur to Akyab as well. Burma is in ruins, all resources trashed, all airfields damaged to make him burn supply, but its time to start looking a little further south, maybe as far as Bangkok and Hanoi.
DEI
Macassar now has 35 naval Wildcats that were originally from a US carrier, and aviation support enough. Supply is still tight but 25k of supply on AKs is nearing. No Jap air attacks yet but the Wildcats hopefully will make him pay if he tries to interdict.
I had a major fuel problem at Koepang, my huge battlefleet drinks up the fuel quite badly. That has now been rectified, and just in case I'm moving two AOs into the area. Also three TKs leave Darwin for Macassar, so I've got plenty of basing options. Theres plenty of fuel in Australia, just not Timor.
My battlefleet sorties on occasion as needed when a particularly juicy convoy is about but neither of us are trying offensive moves. He has at least two CVs near Soerabaja, so we are sort of glaring at each other, neither side willing to commit close to the opponents LBA. This state of affairs suits me, as every so often Mitchells and Beaufighters scramble with Lightning escort and have a go at his CVs. The bombers never hit anything but the Lightnings always shoot down a few of his valuable naval pilots.
SOPAC
One of my CVEs got bombed by Betties while escorting another convoy to PM, and is going to have to be sent back to Pearl when the flooding has stopped. BB Colorado did its duty and absorbed a few nerf bombs rather than the fragile escort carriers as well. In return 100 Fortresses did a number on Lae, its a long way away so damage wasnt too heavy with half load bombers, but it did crater the runway a bit.
He has evacuated Rabaul, no airplanes at all. I'm continuing to pound at him there while Torokina is being built up, most of my engineers are now in position there.
Once Port Moresby has received this convoy I'm moving the cargo ships to the Solomons, and will try to make a move on Gasmata, which is ungarrisoned, probably with a paradrop at first.
CENTPAC
Paratroops hit Majuro and captured it, at the same time the APs arrived with CVL Princeton escorting. Perfect timing. Hopefully tomorrow the forces will land, two divisions of infantry. Baseforces, SeaBees and CD units are a week and a bit out, unfortunately the Pacific is big, and Pearl Harbour is quite a ways sailing for an AK.
His other islands in the Marshalls are very quiet. I know he has Kates based there but Majuro is range 6 from Kwajalein so they cannot interfere. My Kiwi Navy raiders from Wake Island have occasionally nosed around his islands on hit and runs but the place looks very quiet.
CV Indomitable at San Diego has all her deck guns fixed now, and got the 43 upgrade as well, so she has an AAA value of 1300+. Not bad! Still on 8 sys damage so theres a while to wait yet, and CV Formidable is on 22 sys damage. Going to leave that British air combat TF in port until they are all on 0 sys and then start using them again.
Not that this is a problem, plenty of US carriers in the pipeline.
