Extra! Extra! Anti-Climax in the Pacific!
Below is the blow by blow I promised of what was supposed to be the 1st carrier vs. carrier duel of the war. However, though a one sided victory for the Allies, it wasn't quite the coup I had hoped for nor, as bad luck would have it, did it turn into the greatly anticipated 1st carrier duel.

Gary Pushing His Luck?
OK, I'm giving my pilots, namely the SBDs, one more shot at the enemy from just out of range of my TBDs (3 hexes from Canton Island). I sort of doubt the enemy carrier will still be there this time, however, I may be able to catch a few invasion transports.
I'm hopping KB isn't lurking anywhere nearby, that's why I've moved slightly to the southwest and just out of range of my own TBDs. I'm guessing if KB is anywhere near, my opponent will guess I'm heading back toward Pearl and try to set up somewhere to the northeast of Canton Island which would hopefully place KB out of range of my carriers. My fingers are crossed and RADM R.A. Spruance is still in charge! So "let's rock!" [8D]
PS. see The Emporer's Champions thread if you want to see what they're up to in response. Just please don't relay information back and forth between our threads. Thanks. [:)]

So, we should keep looking forward? Wishing you luck, as the Allies in 1942 you need it. [:D]

RE: Gary Pushing His Luck?
Hi Capt Sherwood, in some ways I'm hoping there will be little to stay tuned for. I'm almost positive my opponent won't keep what is most probably Ryujo and a CS around for another turn but my greatest fear is that KB is somewhere nearby. None of us have seen KB since Pearl Harbor. So, "God willing and the KB doesn't arrive", this will be my last turn in the area before I break off. [:)]

Gary Pushed His Luck!!
ooops... [8|]
You might want to have a look at the Emporer's Champions thread for the scoop. Looks like nothing can stop them now.

EDIT: I think I'm going to rename our thread "Total Disaster".

Debacle at Canton
You pushed your luck not once, not even twice, but three times. In January 1942, without knowing where KB was, having lost the element of surprise, you stayed around what promised to be a big invasion force?! [:@]
You were lucky you didn't get pounded earlier -- now you have just the Saratoga left for most of the remainder of 1942. The ignominy of it all. [:-]

Oops, I guess this means you will have to wait for a little longer before continuing with your offensive? [8|]

RE: Shhh...Executing Op GRAND SLAM!
Update on the Southeast Asia and China theaters. The disaster at Sian has been averted, but China is in a poor position, as you can see from the map below. The forces at Sian successfully withdrew toward Kungchang and Chunking. My armies are know split by his 2+ Divs at Sian. His army has not yet pursued my forces toward Chunking as I had hoped. However, they have not moved toward Yenen yet as I had feared. Most of his force has withdrawn toward Homan and his attacks on Wuchow have gotten stronger.
My original plan was to lure his army toward Chunking and try and cut off their supply. However, since my opponent seems to be choosing caution. My short term strategy will be to harras his lines on transportation (communication) between Homan and Canton. The goal is going to be to get him to further spread out his troops and take a more defensive stance. I will attack from Ichang and Kweilin, then when he responds with sufficient force, I will retreat back to my forts again. Also, a small army is going to attack the 2 Mongolian Cav divisions north of Lanchow, hopefully clearing the northern road for a small army to manuveur around behind his amry at Yenen.
I am calling my defensive strategy the sphere of radiant protection (unless someone else thinks of a better name). [8|] THe idea is to use geometty to my advantage. My forces will be on the inside of the sphere (collected) his will be on the outside of the sphere (dispersed). His army controls the rail lines, but must move much larger distances to redeploy. Mine must move along roads, but have shorter distances to cover.
I expect that equilibrium will be met. I hope over the coming two months to bring significant medium bombers into China to break that stalemate. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Jap Infiltrators Capture Saratoga!
This cable just arrived in Noumea, hopefully not too late!

Red alert! Scott, a Japanese infiltration party has taken over the bridge of CV Saratoga and has her camped out on top of a Jap submarine! Suggest you notify marines on board to attempt to retake bridge immediately to steer clear of waters just south of Lunga!

Just don't rush into anything -- the good thing about China is that once you have achieved equilibrium, you can pound him from the air with 4E bombers until he wilts away. All the while your armies can build up strength. Offensives are difficult, better to wait even a year after achieving stalemate and then steamroll him in (say) late 1943 than start in late 1942, be beaten back with heavy losses and lose the ability to go on the offensive for a long time. I'm a big believer in a general Chinese offensive (and a UK one from India) when overwhelming force has been amassed -- Japan can beat off single, focussed attacks, but not ones along several axes at once.
And while you're on the defeensive, his losses are usually greater than yours -- nothing like breaking a Jap attack and giving him 10K+ casualties in front of one of your level 9 forts for accumulating VPs and boosting morale.
RE: Shhh...Executing Op GRAND SLAM!
Sorry it has been over a month since the last update. [:(] We are in the process of finishing the update to ver 1.602 quick update off the top of my head. [8|] Carriers are even or near there abouts. [X(] Lost 3 to their 2, I think. In my area of operation, resources and oil continue to be shipped to OZ from DEI. POW and Repulse are still in Sydney being repaired. I will continue to strip units or partial units out of the theater, to OZ and PM.
