ORIGINAL: Capt. Harlock
ships upgraded as scheduled no perturbances by now. supply situation excellent - I have large stockpiles everywhere- lot of oil and resources grabbed in captured bases - soon conwoys will be created to feed home islands. War machine works good - best example - I have below 30k manpower in pool in and it gooes down - troops are in good shape - new units are ready fast

Things are looking bad for the Allies. If Raver has any bright ideas, he'd better execute them soon. (Have you thought about the North Pacific?)

North Pacific is too much of a risk......you are ineffect attcking on a very thin front towards the Jap mainland. And then there is the issue of the weather and therefore higher op losses.

I sent my recon CVE to see what is going on on route to OZ and found 3 convoys [:D]
I suspected some movement when I-166 found transports week ago near colombo
Unfortunately CVE is only with full complement of aircraft so small KB was not available
only 16 attack planes and limited sortis and 3 convoys nearby[:@
as far as northern area is concerned it has limited use for both sides weather is a Real problem there but I know the risk. Action taken is confidential

Air units I care little about as they are faster to replace, it is the LCUs that concern me the most as they take a long time to rebuild. Besides which, any pilot who starts the airwar at 50 exp will quickly rise to a exp 65..............................if he can survive of course[:'(]

It would make sense to extend to the west of India if only to protect your left flank. But the question is how far north will you push before you decide to "rest"[&:] This is critcal intel that I need to help develop my defense of India.

About twenty turns ago I decided that all of the transport ships normally found in Karachi would be useless so I aordered them all to steam south but Sneer has found them, but with only a small carrier so the damage is not going to be too bad. He missed the heavy metal....the RN BBs staem at a faster rate than the old luggers and they are now safe on the Aussie North coast.

Yes it is a good fix for the India problem.......pity nothing can be done about the far left and bottom boundery of the map [:(]

Great hunting west of Batavia

Post by Sneer »

Surprise!!!
rest of small KB is on station
they were late as they moved to soerabaja to take new pilots
now green recruits learn how to fly torpedo attack in practise - result are poor but quality of small KB is poor too.
I'm impressed by number of contacts I guess no less then 50 ships in 7 or 8 Tfs all over the ocean.
I wish big KB was here

I attacked Colombo port with unescorted strike - wanted to hunt down damaged carrier as recon showed 1 BB ? class ship in port
many planes lost
I took a risk and lost it - that's life
Interesting is how many ships I will score from Raver's exodus
5..10 ..more
low number of kates and quality of pilots will not help much

RE: Great hunting west of Batavia

Post by Sneer »

red alert for whole region
there are at least 100 ships in region and all steam south
Taiyo and Ryuho almost out of sorties this leave me 20+ kates in third group
pilots who was green few days ago today are on average at 45 - if they live this operation they will be 55-60
... so many ships so little planes...
No single warship seen
I know map limitation is not ok but sending 50 AKs without assist of single warship was not practised especially we all know ship were not forced to escape from India
6 or 7 ships sunk more damaged I desperately try to find ships to join great hunting - difficult task as I'm surprised by this exodus and escort of CVLs was very thin - basicly only 3 Cls were on place to hunt

RE: Great hunting west of Batavia

Post by Sneer »

I managed to bring light forces to the area
I'm desperated enough to use scout cruisers in bombing attacks - especially petes on naval attack are fun - They rested in Japan and were moved to batavia at full speed during last 2 weeks - I expected supply convoy from Karachi to Perth/Sydney
like in a good movie - action start hot and gets intense from "turn to turn"
first warship seen
maybe DD escorted sth valuable ?
my bet is Raver halted convoys in SE Pac and tries to send supply from Karachi - convoys had to load up and that's why they are relatively late and the end of this exodus- I wanted to post screenshot but TF localization is confidential
almost all Ravers transports are dispersed into 1 ship Tfs - a bit "gamey" when there are 20-30 1 ship TFs in hex but I can live with this as my kate attacks are small
2 of my carriers out of sorties now

RE: Great hunting west of Batavia

Post by Sneer »

more naval assets entered combat
I try to use everything I have
CA Maya run out of main gun ammo ! CL Abukuma and few other ships almost out too!
after few turns I'll post todays map - it is still confidential now
maybe Raver will decide to bring back BBs and other heavy stuff to help convoys?
or his US CV steam north to intercept weak Japenase group ?
on the other hand - he asks himself where is main KB group ?
If british CV were undamaged they could mess a bit in this battle
probably we will not get known before Christmas as it is probably last or one of the lsat turns this week
Raver's losses estimated on 3TK and 13-15 AK - many damaged
but battle is far from being over

RE: Great hunting west of Batavia

Post by sven6345789 »

I am in the same situation as raver is in in my game against sneer. I tried a counterattack with my carriers in the south pacific (it is march 1942). This cost me two carriers, three AOs, 5 CAs(!!!) and a few DDs. So , there really is no chance to counterattack this early. I also wait for the middle of 1943, when i get an advantage in carriers. By that time, i will try to attack in the central and south pacific. There is still a chance to reach the marianas in time, starting with strategic bombardement of japan in time. India is not important for this tactic, also the threat to loose it has been a bad hit to my morale!
Bougainville, November 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. It rained today.

I will gladly see Raver counterattacking in early 42
The only loss I can't afford is fleet and I don't expect Raver will risk his carriers so early.
most of my transport traffic ceased as realocation of troops and supply is finished so nothing to catch in this field
aircrafts are plenty in pool pilots can be trained fast with my amount of supply.
Army has lot of armament points in pool ready
Manpower is little low - 20k only but troops are almost fill till max - most of my divisions - except those fighting in India has 95/100 strenght - new units are built almost instantly up to 80%+ strenght so I gladly see some fight.
Especially my China theater units are top fit and ready to fight - but first I'll starve enemy bases by damaging resources- Maybe chinase offensive will start in end of 42 ???
This was second most important decision of taking east India and will take this benefit
Cutting off and starving China after closing burma road and preventing airlift is really nice.

Great hunting gets even more intense
dispersing ships is great tactics against aerial attacks but not against CA hunting in the dark :-) - it is far easier sink few ships in the row than few from convoy
I counted 35 sunk ships since beginning of operation.
I'll do my best to increase this amount.
I hope I'll sink some more AP/TK as their loss shoul hurt Raver in short term
may be problematic as Kates numbers goes systematiclydown as well as sorties - I will not manage to go to base , refit and come back so efficiency of aerial attack will go lower

I doubt I will post anything during next few days
Merry Christmas to all of you who have fun reading this AAR

CV vs. CV in 1942

Post by Capt. Harlock »

So , there really is no chance to counterattack this early. I also wait for the middle of 1943, when i get an advantage in carriers.

IMHO the American carriers can attack profitably if the following conditions are met:

1) Fewer than four fleet CV's in the Japanese TF (Don't mess with the KB Death Star!)
2) All American CV's have more than 30 fighters each.
3) Devastators have been upgraded to Avengers. (Not for attack, but the longer range is helpful for search.)
4) Escort ships with 40 mm AAA are present.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Very true, but to meet the condition of point one you have to have outstanding intel.
