do you pay upkeep for controlled minors?

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

do you pay upkeep for controlled minors?

Post by Treefrog »

Do you pay upkeep for controlled minors, for example, in 1805 scenario does France pay upkeep for the Dutch, Bavarian, and Italian corps, fleets, ships, land units, etc.?

The basic military upkeep is 556 (roughly), but when I did a rough calculation of all French and minor controlled units, fleets, etc. per chart on page 28 the total was roughly 654. The total of those controlled minors was roughly 114.

Given that I might have miscalculated, those numbers are intriguingly close, suggesting that France didn't have to pay the upkeep for the controlled minors.

Does anybody know for sure?

You don't pay for Protectorate forces upkeep, but you do pay their supply. (1st para, pg. 52)

that is one of the reasons why you "fight" so HARD for some of the Protectorites, Bavaria has a nice army, Poland can turn the tide of any war, depending on who gains control of them

taking a land, gives you more, but costs you also, protectors, give you less, but you gain there troops

some of the costs have changed since the rules were written, so the number will not work out right, all the times

I seem to be having a problem (or bonus effect!) playing Turkey in a current 1792 scenario 2.16 beta game where a large number of controlled minor units for Turkey are not appearing as a forage or supply cost in the supply report. For example in Wurttemburg (Turkish protectorate) where 2 Turkish armies were located I switched every unit plus army and corps to supply (with depot placed) to recover strength after a long conflict with France. Out of 30 plus units only 8 appeared on the supply listing (they didn't appear as foraging either). It wasn't just the report as my funds showed only a matching small cost reduction.

On checking I discovered that the only units being charged supply were pure Turkish ones - the others such as Wurttemburg, Serbian, Greece, Albanian etc did not appear. There were protectorate units on the forage section of the report including some for these countries (none appeared for Wurttemburg) but not all were there.

As a test I switched some Egyptian units which had appeared on the forage lists to supply (with a depot placed)and they disappeared from the list.

My guess is that this is linked to the introduction of feudal levies for protectorates. Even if supply is free for these units they should still undergo forage attrition when applicable. Also if they have such a unique ability we need to be able to identify them from other standard units.

The number of units being produced by protectorates do seem excessive and led me to greatly limit the number of pure Turkish units I was building as a consequence. I didn't realise at the time what an advantage they gave Turkey!
