Norton Internet Security 2006

Does anyone have Norton Internet Security 2006. It has disabled everything on my computer. Can't access any folders, no start menu opption are working. grrrrrr

Probably working as designed as it seems that any Symantec product assumes that the computer's sole purpose is to run the Symantec software.

I had no problem with Norton AntiVirus, but it was time to upgrade as my subscription had expired. grrrr Been trying to unistall but cant do anything maybe customer support will help.

Check their downloads section, you might find an "uninstall utility" for what may be a common problem. I can't remember if it was Symantec or ATI (or both) but I had to use a utility to do a clean uninstall. You couldn't get it done in Windows XP somehow.

I prefer McAfee's Firewall. It's far less intrusive, does just as good a job, and is simple to configure and keep updated. I use it in conjunction with a hardware router/firewall and I have no problems hosting tons of games without disabling either the hardware or software firewalls. I've also never gotton a single virus, trojan, spyware, or popup using only the following.

McAfee Internet Firewall & Anti-Virus
Netgear FVS-318 Hardware Router/Firewall
Internet Explorer Popup Blocker
Microsoft Realtime AntiSpyware Protection (Beta at that)

For all those that would talk bad about the MS AntiSpyware its quite simple, they are stealing Windows XP. The program requires you have an authentic copy to work. And it works great and is the only largescale deployed AntiSpyware program where you don't have to pay for the realtime element (Ad-Aware etc does not give realtime protection in the free versions).

Anyway thats what I use on all of my computers and I've yet to have a single problem on any.

2 of them are dirt cheap and 2 are free thats why I mention it...

Kerio Personal firewall and AntiVir, along with the free MS security tools is all you need.

Dump Norton, I did 2 years ago allready and don´t look back (and I used Norton security products for like 5 years in a row). Norton becomes more and more intrusive and has developed to a premium ressource hog too

My computer is all messed up. [:@][:@] Finally got Norton uninstalled, but that is the least of my problems. Errors all over. Can't install this and that. Tried to do a restore on Windows and it is in a loop....grrrrrr[:(][:@][:(][:@] All is not lost. Tech will be here tomorrow afternoon. [8|]

I've never had a problem with Norton as far as what you describe.Though i do believe it when people say that it views evrything as a threat just try updating any of your games from Bioware but in its defense half the crap is (Game)Spyware that is coming from that site,or so it seems.

I run Norton and like you it was time to upgrade because the subscription was running out. But it seems, for me that fortunately this year I did not renew. You have saved me this problem. I hope you resolve yours.

Give an update after the tech visits you would you so I can know exactly how your computer was screwed with. Thanks.

I stay away from Nortons, Its never been any good since it's DOS days, Symantic at one time was good...

Myself I use a Router Firewall that has both NAT and SPI plus I run Zone Alarm Pro (not free ZA)
Toss in Mcafees antivirius/shield, and Adaware
and I Never have had a problem.

On top is my ISP scans incoming email with nortons, any whitelisted that go through that hit my Mcafees and the firewalls...

Plus ZA Pro has a sort of email attach protection... and its own updated spyware scanner.


Irregardless, anything New can hit one, unless its spotted by its general charistics, any anti-vir/spyware/trojan/worm scanner can ony spot what its updated for... constant updates...

I would much rather have a virus on my system, than have norton. I think it was almost 10 years ago now, where Norton anti-virus would use 99% of your cpu, and only let you use 1% for everything else. I doubt much has changed in that time. As mentioned, Norton is probably running just as it should right now. I'd dump it like the plague.

AVG Free edition is very good - updates nearly every day and it don't cost a penny. Blocked an adware trojan only yesterday.

Finally a tech showed up. Going to cost me $300 to fix, my OS is toast. [:(] I will be getting a refund for Nortons. Tech gave me a few recommendations like AVG and Spy Sweeper. Looks like I will be leaning towards AVG. [8D]

And the tech confirmed that all of this damage was done by Norton? If so, you should be getting more than a refund for the software... they should pay for the damages and repair costs too.

I have to be just a little skeptical that the Symantec software did all of this damage though. It sounds more like you got by hit by a virus or worm which unhappily coincided with the Norton installation.

But who knows... today's computer environment is pretty scary and I count myself lucky not to have any serious problems and I have run Norton Anti-virus for well over a decade now, along with Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D... all of which were recommended by the Technology staff at Indiana University and distributed free to every student along with Windows XP and MS Office (they have quite a sweet licensing deal with Microsoft). Anyway, IU has 35,000 computers on it's network and they all run these products without problems.

Disclaimer: I own no Symantec stock [:D] but some of the rhetoric in this thread is getting a bit over the top in bashing Symantec in favor of other's preferred security options.

The bottom line is to get some protection emplaced on your PC, I doubt that the particular flavor you choose will prove to be that much better or worse than the alternatives in the long run.

Of course it didn't. Just like StarForce copy protection doesn't permanently damage cdr drives as many have claimed. The company has even set up a competition with thousands of dollars in reward money if you can setup a system in front of them, demonstrate the drive works, then install their software and have it break it.

People love to blame their own lack of PC Skills on something else. Hell even I've gotten mad before when I couldn't host a game only to realize that for whatever reason my PC had decided to nab a different IP from my router/firewall and therefore the ports I had opened and the subsequent NAT I'd defined was no longer correct. Changed the NAT definition and suddenly things were all good again.

And I've screamed at problems with games when I have 100 other games that work fine only to go ahead and update drivers and surprise surprise it's all fine then.

No, there really isn't anything wrong with Symantec/Norton software, it just comes down to how good the software is in letting you know what its doing and control what its doing. This is why I like McAfee Firewall so much. You can be a total PC idiot and it prompts you through everything in common words and nice popup interface boxes. I don't even have to disable it to host online games.

I've just never heard of anyone actually recommending Norton, certainly no one here has come forward yet. If nothing else its the most confusing of the bunch. For some reason it tends to be bundled with hardware alot, perhaps thats another bad sign.
